NICE THIS MORNING.
RAIN THIS AFTERNOON.
RAINING NOW. SEE THE RAIN WITH OUR WEB CAM. GO TO KMAQ HOME PAGE AND CLICK-ON THE LISTEN BUTTON AND SEE RAIN COMING DOWN IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA.
MORE RAIN TONIGHT.
THEN NICE TOMORROW THROUGH MONDAY, LABOR DAY.
WE NEED CANDIDATES (PLURAL) FOR 5 OF 7 COUNCIL SEATS IN MAQUOKETA. TODAY, PAPERS WERE FILLED FOR TWO SEATS. JERRY BOWEN FOR AT-LARGE AND ED TURNEY FOR RE-ELECTION IN FIRST WARD. BOWEN WAS ON COUNCIL BEFORE.
ALSO NEED A MAYOR CANDIDATE. NEIL MOREHEAD HASN'T MADE UP HIS MIND
YET IF HE WILL SEEK RE-ELECTION. IF WE HAD TERM LIMITS, HE WOULD
NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR RE-ELECTION. I THINK ALL POLITICAL OFFICES SHOULD
HAVE TERM LIMITS. MAYOR HUTE WILL NOT SEEK RE-ELECTION. NO CANDIDATE
FOR MAYOR AS OF TODAY. MARGO SHOUSE I'VE HEARD, IS NOT GOING TO RUN AGAIN. SHE WAS NOT AT COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT, SO NO OFFICIAL WORD FROM HER. I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED. SHERI MELVOLD TOLD ME LONGTIME PAST MAYOR TOM MESSERLI WILL NOT RUN FOR MAYOR, BUT I HAVE NOT HEARD THAT FROM HIM.
WE NEED TWO CANDIDATES FOR EVERY POSITION! THAT'S THE WAY IT SHOULD BE!
TAKING NANCY OUT FOR DINNER...HER BIRTHDAY TODAY.

86 TODAY.
COOLER TOMORROW AND REST OF THE WEEK.
JACKSON COUNTY IS GETTING A NEW INDUSTRY. GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONIES FOR THE COMPANY WILL BE MONDAY IN BELLEVUE. SEDGEWICK, A CLAIMS MANAGEMENT SERVICE FOR FORTUNE 500 COMPANIES WILL BREAK GROUND FOR A NEW BUILDING OFF HIGHWAY 52 NORTH OF BELLEVUE. BELLEVUE CITY ADMINISTRATOR LORAS HERRIG SAID THEY ARE IN THE PROCESS OF ANNEXING THE LAND NOW. THE NEW BUILDING WILL EMPLOY 50 TO 100 PEOPLE. THE CEREMONY WILL BE AT 9 A.M. MONDAY. THE C-E-O FOR SEDGEWICK, DAVE NORTH, HAS LIVED IN BELLEVUE FOR SEVERAL YEARS. HE HAS
FACILITIES IN DUBUQUE AND PLANS TO EXPAND THERE ALSO.
JOBLESS RATES IN THE AREA DROPPED SLIGHTLY IN JULY FROM JUNE.
IN JACKSON COUNTY, THE JULY UNEMPLOYMENT RATE WAS 6.6 PERCENT, DOWN FROM
6.9 IN JUNE.
ON THE POLICE BLOTTER:
JAKE HAYWARD ON EAST PLATT STREET REPORTED YESTERDAY MORNING THAT SOMEONE SCRATCHEDD HIS VEHICLE AND TRIED TO STEEL THE TACH OUT OF HIS VEHICLE AND
BROKE IT.
AND
HELEN RICKLEFS ON S. MAIN STREET REPORTED YESTERDAY THAT SOMEONE TOOK
A SCANNER FROM HER RESIDENCE.
READ THE STORY BELOW ABOUT THE NEW BARBER IN MAQUOKETA, WITH PHOTO.
I AGREE...IT DOESN'T LOOK GOOD FOR THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS. BUT, THEY
STILL HAVE 6 GAMES REMAINING WITH THE BREWERS. LIKE YOGI SAID...
"IT AIN'T OVER UNTIL IT'S OVER".

ANOTHER NICE DAY IN IOWA!
A JACKSON COUNTY JURY THIS AFTERNOON FOUND THE MILWAUKEE MAN, JASON BROWN, AGE 31, GUILTY OF ROBBERY IN THE FIRST DEGREE FOR HIS INVOLVMENT IN THE ROBBERY OF THE ANDREW BRANCH OF THE MAQUOKETA STATE BANK. THE JURY CAME BACK AT 1:30 P.M. AFTER RECEIVING THE CASE AT NOON. LUNCH WAS SERVED AT THAT TIME AND IT IS NOT KNOWN IF THEY DELIBERATED DURING THEIR LUNCH
TIME. THE JUDGE SAID BROWN WILL BE SENTENCED AT 9 A.M. ON SEPTEMBER 16TH.
PROSECUTORS SAY THE ROBBERY IN THE FIRST DEGREE IS A FORCEBLE FELONY WITH A MANDATORY 25 YEAR SENTENCE AND THAT BROWN WILL BE REQUIRED TO SERVE 70%
OF THE TIME, OR OVER 17 YEARS. THERE WILL BE NO BAIL. BROWN HAS BEEN HELD IN THE JACKSON COUNTY JAIL ALMOST A YEAR AND WILL REMAIN THERE UNTIL THE SENTENCING. THERE WAS ANOTHER MAN WHO WENT INTO THE BANK WITH
BROWN LAST SEPTEMBER AND THE STATE PROSECUTOR SAID THE INVESTIGATION
OF THE BANK ROBBERY WILL CONTINUE.
THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL THIS WEEK ASKED ENGINEERS TO DRAW UP PLANS
TO PAVE 17TH STREET AND MATTESON STREET. THE COUNCIL DID NOT SAY HOW THEY WILL PAY FOR THE WORK. THE ONE STREET, 17TH, IS THE ONE BEHIND WAL MART
THAT LEADS INTO THE PRAIRIE CREEK GOLF COURSE SUBDIVISION. THAT WILL BE NICE TO HAVE THAT PAVED. KIND OF BAD NOW THAT THERE IS A GRAVEL ROAD

CONNECTING THE CITY WITH A SUBDIVISION AND GOLF COURSE.

YESTERDAY, NANCY AND I ESCORTED THE KMAQ TRAVEL BUS TO THE STATE FAIR
IN DES MOINES. LEFT THE FAIRGROUNDS AT 7:30 A.M. AND WE WERE BACK JUST
AFTER 8:30 LAST NIGHT. GOOD WEATHER. BIG CROWDS. ALL 46 OF US HAD
A GOOD TIME. RED HENTON HEADED FOR THE HORSESHOE PITCHING AREA AND
DEMONSTRATED HIS SKILL TO ONLOOKERS. WE SAW THE FAMOUS BUTTER COW.
WENT PAST THE PUMPKIN PATCH. VISITED CONNIE TJARKS AT HER "KNOT ENOUGH
TYME" BOOTH WHERE FRIEND MARILYN WILLEY WAS HELPING HER FOR A COUPLE DAYS.
CONNIE (RURAL MAQUOKETA AND ROTARY PRESIDENT) IS COMMITTED TO BEING AT
HER BOOTH FROM 9 AM UNTIL 9 PM EVERY DAY OF THE FAIR. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO WENT ON THE KMAQ TRIP. THAT'S THE WAY TO GO! THE BUS TOOK US RIGHT
DOWN TO THE MAIN AREA OF THE FAIR AND PICKED US UP THERE TOO. NO WALKING
FROM THE PARKING LOTS A LONG WAY AWAY. DURING THE FIVE HOURS ON THE FAIRGROUNDS, LOTS OF WALKING AND LOTS OF FOOD!
NEEDLESS TO SAY....SLEPT WELL LAST NIGHT!

TODAY'S (TUESDAY) DAILY REPORT IS BELOW THIS ONE!
PRESIDENT OBAMA MADE AN UNSCHEDULED STOP AT THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL
THIS AFTERNOON AROUND 4 O'CLOCK.
HE LEFT HIGHWAY 61 (TRAVELING SOUTH) AND HIS MILLION-DOLLAR BUS WENT
DOWN PLATT STREET AND TURNED ON TO VERMONT AND UP TO THE HIGH SCHOOL.
SUPT. KIM HUCKSTADT SAID HE HAD ABOUT A 3-MINUTE NOTICE THAT OBAMA
WAS COMING TO THE HIGH SCHOOL. HUCKSTADT SAID THERE WERE TEACHERS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL TODAY FOR IN-SERVICE DAY, BUT THEY HAD LEFT. THE HIGH
SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL TEAM WAS IN THE GYM FOR A PRACTICE SESSION AND THE PRESIDENT SHOOK HANDS WITH ALL OF THEM AND THEY HAD THEIR PICTURE TAKEN WITH HIM AS A GROUP. HUCKSTADT SAID HE TALKED WITH OBAMA AND THAT
OBAMA BROUGHT UP EDUCATION TO HIM AND THEY TALKED ABOUT "CHILD LEFT
BEHIND" AND A COUPLE OTHER MATTERS. KMAQ'S LEIGHTON HEPKER WENT UP TO THE HIGH SCHOOL BUT THE LOCAL MEDIA WAS NOT PERMITTED TO GO INTO THE SCHOOL. OBAMA'S VISIT TO MAQUOKETA WAS ABOUT 20-25 MINUTES LONG. WE ALSO LEARNED THAT EARLIER TODAY, RETIRED MAQUOKETA VOCAL MUSIC TEACHER, PAM CRAWFORD, NOW
TEACHING PART TIME IN DUBUQUE COUNTY, SANG THE NATIONAL ANTHEM AT PEOSTA
TODAY PRIOR TO OBAMA SPEAKING AT THE SCHOOL THERE.
SO, SOME EXCITEMENT TODAY IN THE TIMBER CITY. THE VOLLEYBALL TEAM
WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER TODAY'S PRACTICE ON THE COURT AT MCHS.
AS FOR THE TRIAL AT THE COURTHOUSE, TOMORROW, ONE MORE WITNESS WILL
GO ON THE STAND AND THEN THE TRIAL IS EXPECTED TO RECESS FOR THE REST OF THE DAY AND FINAL ARGUMENTS WILL BE DONE THURSDAY MORNING AND THE CASE WILL
GO TO THE JURY. A VERDICT IS EXPECTED THURSDAY AFTERNOON OR SOONER.
NOW...HOPE YOU WILL GO TO TODAY'S REGULAR TUESDAY DAILY REPORT BELOW.
AND THANKS FOR CHECKING IN ONCE...OR FOR SOME OF YOU, A SECOND TIME.

NICE DAY...80
RAIN LATER TONIGHT AND TOMORROW MORNING.
PRESIDENT OBAMA JUST WENT THROUGH JACKSON COUNTY ON A BUS TRAVELING SOUTH FROM PEOSTA. EVERY ENTRY TO 4-LANE 61 WAS COVERED
BY AN EMERGENCY VEHICLE, TO BLOCK TRAFFIC UNTIL THE COACH WENT PAST.
HIGHWAY 61 PAST MAQUOKETA MINUTES AGO OPENED TO TRAFFIC AGAIN.
I THINK HE STAYS OVERNIGHT TONIGHT IN DAVENPORT AND THEN ON TO A COUPLE
SMALL ILLINOIS CITIES TOMORROW WITH MORE SPEAKING TO SMALL-TOWN AMERICA
ABOUT HIS "JOBS" PLAN. AND WEARING NO TIE! I THINK THE PRESIDENT SHOULD
WEAR A TIE EVERYWHERE HE GOES IN PUBLIC. COAT NOT NECESSARY, BUT TIE FOR
SURE.
THE BANK ROBBERY TRIAL CONTINUED ALL DAY TODAY. NO VERDICT.
THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL HIRED A NEW PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR.
HE IS FRANK ELLENZ, 54, OF WYNONA, MINNESOTA. HE IS EXPECTED TO START IN MID-SEPTEMBER. HE WORKS FOR AN ENGINEERING FIRM IN MINNESOTA AS AN INSPECTOR. HE HAS NO EXPERIENCE IN WORKING FOR CITIES. HIS STARTING
SALARY WILL BE $52,000 A YEAR AND HE WILL RECEIVE A RAISE IN 6 MONTHS.
DID YOU KNOW? THE MAQUOKETA RIVER IS A TRIBUTARY OF THE MISSISSIPPI
RIVER, APPROXIMATELY 150 MILES LONG.
NOW...YOU LEARNED SOMETHING TODAY.
NO REPORT TOMORROW. I'M TAKING A NEARLY FULL KMAQ TRAVEL BUS TO THE
IOWA STATE FAIR.
GOING TO TRY THE NEW POPULAR "BUTTER ON A STICK" AT THE FAIR.
DENNIS VOY
I JUST LEARNED PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS STOPPED AT THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL.
IF THAT IS TRUE, I'LL COME BACK LATER IF I FIND OUT MORE INFORMATION.
IT IS NOW JUST AFTER 4 P.M.

SLIGHTLY CLOUDY DAY TODAY AND POSSIBILITY OF RAIN LATER TODAY OR TONIGHT.
HOPE NOT! I HAVE THE FAMILY MOVIES SMURFS/ZOOKEEPER STARTING TONIGHT
AT THE DRIVE-IN AND SHOULD HAVE A VERY GOOD WEEKEND IF THE WEATHER
STAYS DESCENT. IT WAS 61 YEARS AGO TONIGHT THAT THE 61 DRIVE-IN OPENED.
IT WAS THE 11TH OF AUGUST, BUT A FRIDAY NIGHT. SEE AD BELOW.
HAD A PIZZA PARTY HERE AT NOON TODAY FOR JACI MOORE, WHO HAS BEEN A STUDENT
ANNOUNCER FOR US HERE FOR 4 YEARS. AND A GOOD ONE! AND NOW SHE
GOES TO KIRKWOOD IN CEDAR RAPIDS WITH CLASSES STARTING IN A COUPLE WEEKS.
GOOD LUCK TO HER!!
A BIG TRIAL IN MAQUOKETA NEXT WEEK. ON TRIAL WILL BE A MILWAUKEE MAN
WHO ALLEGEDLY ROBBED THE MAQUOKETA STATE BANK ANDREW OFFICE ALMOST A YEAR
AGO.
A STUDY WILL BE DONE IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS TO DETERMINE THE FUTURE
OF THE MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC UTILITY'S POWER PLAN. AT THE BOARD MEETING LAST NIGHT, MMEU MANAGER MIKE NICKESON SAID THE POWER PLANT DOES NOT PRODUCE ENOUGH REVENUES FOR WHAT IT COSTS TO OPERATE. THERE ARE FIVE EMPLOYEES CURRENTLY WORKING AT THE PLANT AND ANOTHER EMPLOYEE IS ON
MILITARY LEAVE.
THE MAQUOKETA VFW IS SPONSORING A FIRST ANNUAL CORN BOIL SUNDAY FROM
4 UNTIL 7 AT THE VOLUNTEER HALL AT THE FAIRGROUNDS. PORK CHOP SANDWICH AND ALL THE CORN YOU WANT FOR ONLY $7. "LIVE" MUSIC ALSO ON THE

GRILLING FOR CHARITY IS A MAQUOKETA STATE BANK EVENT THEY SPONSOR A COUPLE TIMES A YEAR, TO HELP A LOCAL CHARITY. IN JUNE, THEY HAD ONE FOR THE
HUMANE SOCIETY AND RAISED OVER $2,000. TODAY, THEY HAD ONE FOR THE
JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, TO RAISE MONEY TO PURCHASE HONDO,
A NEW K-9 OFFICER. IN THE BANK'S NORTH PARKING LOT, TENTS AND CHAIRS
WERE SET UP, THE BIG GRILL WAS BROUGHT IN FOR COOKING PORK AND BEEF BURGERS AND THERE WAS ALSO LEMONADE, CHIPS AND BAKED GOODS MADE BY M-S-B STAFF
MEMBERS. ALL THE FOOD WAS FREE, BUT DONATIONS WERE ACCEPTED FOR THE
HONDO K-9 FUND. THE M-S-B EMPLOYEES DO ALL THE WORK, INCLUDING GRILLING
AND THE FOOD IS PURCHASED BY THE BANK. AND, AN EXTRA FEATURE THIS TIME WAS THE "DUNK A SHERIFF EMPLOYEE" DUNK TANK AT 3 BALLS FOR A DOLLAR.
DEPUTIES AND OFFICE PERSONNEL TOOK TURNS IN THE TANK. I BOUGHT 3 BALLS AND ON THROW NUMBER 1, I DUNKED KAREL WELLS, IN PHOTO BELOW. SHE WORKS

IT HAS BEEN A VERY WET DAY IN MAQUOKETA.
WE HAVE HAD OVER 3 INCHES OF RAIN ALREADY AND IT IS STILL RAINING AS YOU WILL SEE IF YOU GO TO THE KMAQ WEB CAM (LISTEN BUTTON) ON HOME PAGE,
KMAQ.COM
A MAQUOKETA MAN, JOSEPH POTTER THE 3RD, AGE 42, IS IN JAIL ON $5,000 CASH BOND AFTER HE WENT FOR A GUN WHEN A JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF DEPUTY ATTEMPTED TO STOP HIM. DEPUTY SHERIFF MIKE PETERS SAID POTTER WAS SHOWING A GUN TO CHILDREN AT LITTLE BEAR PARK AT 7:52 FRIDAY NIGHT. PETERS FOUND POTTER RIDING HIS BICYCLE AT NORTH 5TH STREET AND GROVE SHORTLY AFTER AND WHEN
PETERS TRIED TO STOP HIM, POTTER'S HAND WENT TO HIS POCKET. DEPUTY PETERS
GOT HIM TO THE GROUND AND IN HIS POCKET, THE DEPUTY FOUND A LOADED 32
CALIBER PISTOL WITH FIVE ROUNDS. THE DEPUTY ALSO FOUND A TUBE WITH
WHITE POWDER, USED FOR METH. POTTER WAS ARRESTED WITHOUT INCIDENT.
THE MAQUOKETA ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT WILL BE ASKED TOMORROW AFTERNOON AT A MEETING AT CITY HALL TO ISSUE A SPECIAL USE PERMIT TO ALLOW A WIND TURBINE TO BE BUILT NEAR THE MAQUOKETA YMCA.
THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD WILL MEET AT 6 TONIGHT AT THE DISTRICT OFFICE.
