NICE WEEKEND.
65 YESTERDAY.
65 AGAIN TODAY WITH SUNNY SKIES.
THE ENTIRE WEEK SHOULD BE NICE.
DURING LAST WEEK'S HOSPITAL BOARD MEETING, SOME STATS WERE PRESENTED.
FOR ONE MONTH....
459 WENT TO THE ER ROOM.
3,348 HAD LAB TESTS.
1,021 HAD THERAPY.
572 IN THE CARDIAC PULMONARY DEPARTMENT.
1,897 SAME DAY SURGERY.
295 HOME HEALTH VISITS.
80 PERCENT OF THE HOSPITAL REVENUE COMES FROM OUT PATIENT SERVICES.
MEDICARE PAYS 56 PERCENT OF THE COST OF SERVICES.
15 PERCENT PAY WITH PRIVATE INSURANCE.
65 PERCENT WITH MEDICARE AND
8 PERCENT HAVE NO INSURANCE.
THERE WAS $1 MILLION IN BAD DEBT LAST YEAR.
THE HOSPITAL PAYS $780,000 FOR OUTSIDE DOCTORS TO STAFF THE ER
ROOM. THE HOSPITAL IS LOOKING TO USE NURSE PRACTIONERS AND PHYSICIANS
ASSISTANTS FROM 6 A.M UNTIL 6 P.M. MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY AND THAT WOULD RESULT IN A $115,000 SAVINGS A YEAR.
SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE HOSPITAL IN MAQUOKETA.
THAT'S ALL I HAVE FOR TODAY.

THE RIVER STAGE OF THE MAQUOKETA RIVER IS UP, BUT HELD STEADY TODAY AND HAS NOT BEEN A PROBLEM. IT WILL GO DOWN BY TOMORROW.
THE MAQUOKETA HOSPITAL WILL BEGIN OFFERING FLU SHOTS AS SOON AS THE
SHIPMENT ARRIVES IN LATE SEPTEMBER. CHERYL CURL, CHIEF NURSING OFFICER AT THE HOSPITAL, SAID THIS YEAR THEY ARE BEING URGED TO START GIVING THE SEASONAL SHOTS EARLIER, AS SOON AS THE SHIPMENT ARRIVES. THE HOSPITAL NORMALLY GIVES 1,000 DOSES EACH FALL SEASON.
THE H1N1 FLU VACCINE IS EXPECTED SOMETIME AFTER THANKSGIVING AND IT WILL BE GIVEN FREE.
THE MAQUOKETA DOWNTOWN FIRE MESS CLEAN-UP DATE HAS BEEN MOVED UP FROM NOVEMBER TO OCTOBER. THE CITY RECEIVED WORD TODAY THAT THE EPA $200,000 GRANT IS COMING TO MAQUOKETA IN SEPTEMBER, A LITTLE SOONER THAN EXPECTED. NEXT, A COUNCIL COMMITTEE WILL SELECT A CONSULTING COMPANY TO SET UP THE BIDDING PROCESS. THE INVERVIEWS, REQUIRED BY THE EPA GRANT, WILL BE CONDUCTED NEXT TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY.
THIS WEEK, MAQUOKTA MAYOR TOM MESSERLI, FILED PAPERS FOR RE-ELECTION.
ALSO, COUNCILMAN AT LARGE JASON HUTE FILED FOR MAYOR.
MAQUOKETA WILL HAVE FOUR COUNCIL SEATS TO FILL. THE SEAT HELD
BY HUTE. TIM CLARK IS NOT GOING TO RUN AGAIN. NEITHER IS GALEN
SAUNDERS. AND MARSHA MYERS RESIGNED EARLIER THIS MONTH.
FOUR OF THE 7 COUNCIL MEMBERS JANUARY 1ST WILL BE NEW.
MAQUOKETA VERSUS WEST LIBERTY TONIGHT AT 7:30 AT GOODENOW FIELD.
HEAR THE GAME ON KMAQ AM OR FM.
I'LL PUT THE SCORE UP HERE TOMORROW MORNING.
HAVE A NICE WEEKEND.

NICE WEEKEND JUST PAST AND NICE DAY TODAY...HIGH 75.
RAIN IN FORECAST THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS.
SCHOOL BOARD MEETING TODAY.
THE MAQUOKETA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION WILL HOST A CANDIDATES
FORUM WEDNESDAY AT 5 P.M. AT THE MAQUOKETA CITY HALL,
WITH SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES MARTY HUDRLIK, INCUMBANT, WHO
IS BEING CHALLENGED BY MIKE NICKESON FOR THE AT LARGE POSITION
ON THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD AND FOR BRIAN TABOR, WHO
IS RUNNING UNOPPOSED FOR RE-ELECTION.
JIM FRANK, AGE 84, DIED LAST NIGHT AT HIS HOME. SERVICES PENDING
AT CARSON AND SON. JIM WAS A LONGTIME FRIEND, WHO ENJOYED KEEPING UP WITH MAQUOKETA HAPPENINGS AND WAS FOR MANY YEARS, A MEMBER AND THEN CHIEF OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. AFTER RETIRING FROM THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AS A MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR , HE SPENT HOURS WEEKLY AT A GARDEN RAILROAD HE BUILDT AT THE RURAL HOME OF HIS DAUGHTER SANDY, AND, HE CONTRIBUTED A LOT OF TIME WORKING AT THE CEMETARY AS A MEMBER OF THE MT. HOPE CEMETERY BOARD. OVER THE YEARS, WHENEVER I HEARD A RUMOR ABOUT SOMETHING IN MAQUOKETA, I KNEW IF I CHECKED WITH HIM, HE MIGHT KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT IT. HE MIGHT HAVE PICKED IT UP AT COFFEE SOMEWHERE IN TOWN. HIS FULL OBITUARY SHOULD BE ON THE CARSON'S WEB SITE SOMETIME TOMORROW. ANOTHER "ONE OF A KIND" MAQUOKETAN
HAS PASSED ON! ALWAYS SAD WHEN THEY LEAVE US. TOO BAD HE
DIDN'T SEE THE FIRE CLEAN-UP DOWNTOWN BEFORE HE DIED.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK. I'M PLANNING TO TAKE A COUPLE DAYS OFF, SO THERE
WILL NOT BE A REPORT UNTIL LATER IN WEEK.

THIS WEEK (WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26TH) WE AT KMAQ WILL OBSERVE OUR 51ST ANNIVERSARY. LAST SATURDAY, AFTER ATTENDING A FUNERAL IN MY HOMETOWN OF HORICON, WISCONSIN, NANCY AND I, ON THE WAY HOME, STOPPED AT FORT ATKINSON, WISCONSIN AND MADE A SURPRISE VISIT TO THE BOB AND ELAINE BROWN HOME. BOB WAS THE FIRST MANAGER OF KMAQ AND HIRED ME IN
AUGUST 1958. BOB WAS KMAQ MANAGER FOR 1 YEAR AND THEN MOVED TO FORT
ATKINSON, TO MANAGE AND START-UP WFAW IN THAT CITY. WHEN IN MAQUOKETA, THE BROWNS FAMILY LIVED ON SOUTH NIAGARA STREET.
THEIR NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS WERE THE WOODY FLENKERS AND THE JUDGE ART JANSENS. BOB IS 88....ELAINE A LITTLE YOUNGER....AND BOTH ENJOYING
RETIREMENT IN THEIR BEAUTIFUL HOME THAT THEY BUILDT IN 1965. WE
HAD FUN TALKING ABOUT THE OLD DAYS OF KMAQ. BOB'S MEMORY IS BETTER THAN MINE. THEY SAID THEY HAD SENT AN ANNIVERSARY CARD THAT
MORNING AND IT CAME TODAY. THANKS TO BOB AND ELAINE AND THE MANY FINE LISTENERS AND ADVERTISERS WE HAVE HAD FOR 51 YEARS. WE LOOK FORWARD TO A BIGGER AND BETTER 52ND YEAR STARTING THURSDAY.

WE WERE EXPECTING RAIN TODAY....BUT GOT SUNSHINE INSTEAD.
AND A HIGH OF 70.
THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL AT THEIR LAST MEETING SUGGESTED THAT POLICE CHIEF BRAD KORANDA LOOK INTO A CITY WIDE NOTIFICATION SYSTEM.
THE CHEIF SAID THE SYSTEM COULD BE USED FOR WATER MAIN SHUT-OFFS AND AS A WAY OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH CITY RESIDENTS. HE SAID MESSAGES COULD BE SENT BY CELL PHONE, EMAIL, TEXTING OR PAGERS. THE COUNTY IS LOOKING AT THIS TOO. THE COST WOULD BE $10,000 A YEAR. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT
HAS A SYSTEM NOW. FOR 50 YEARS, THE CITY, POLICE AND SCHOOLS HAVE
DEPENDED ON KMAQ TO GET THIS INFORMATION OUT. AND THIS WORKED FINE!!
AND WE DID IT FOR NOTHING BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT WE ARE HERE FOR...OUR PUBLIC SERVICE OBLIGATION. NOW (AND IN THE FUTURE) WE ARE STILL HERE FROM 5 AM UNTIL 10 PM TO PUT THIS INFORMATION OUT TO CITIZENS. NOT EVERYONE MAY BE LISTENING ALL THE TIME, BUT WORD SPREADS QUICKLY ONCE ON-THE-AIR.
A MAQUOKETA WOMAN, CYNTHIA ARTERBERRY, HAS BEEN FIEND $831.20 ON CHARGES OF NOT HAVING A DOG LICENSE AND ALLOWING HER DOG TO RUN WHICH RESULTED IN A NEIGHBOR CHILD BEING BITTEN. MAQUOKETA HAS A NEW LAW (ORDINANCE) THAT DOGS NEED TO BE LICENSED AT $5.00 PER YEAR.
THEY MUST HAVE RABIES SHOTS TO GET THE LICENSE TOO.
SARA AND BRETT TALLMAN OF MAQUKETA ARE PARENTS OF A GIRL BORN
THURSDAY, AUGUST 13TH AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL. GRANDPARENTS ARE
JULIE AND JOHN KEENEY OF MAQUOKETA.
A.J. AND KRIS LOSS OF BETTENDORF ARE PARENTS OF A GIRL BORN WEDNESDAY AT DAVENPORT. GRANDPARENTS ARE JOE AND LINDA BULLOCK OF MAQUOKETA.
A REMINDER...THIS DAILY REPORT IS ONLY ABOUT MAQUOKETA AND MAQUOKETA CITIZENS AND THEREFORE ON BIRTHS, I MENTION ONLY THE GRANDPARENTS THAT LIVE IN MAQUOKETA.

74 TODAY....NICE DAY.
RAIN TONIGHT, TOMORROW AND THURSDAY, BUT WEEKEND SHOULD BE GOOD.
CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT: JACK ROSENBERG, FORMER MAYOR,
APPEARED BEFORE THE COUNCIL AND COMPLAINED THE WAY NEW
RV SPACES ARE BEING ARRANGED IN THE HORSESHOE POND RV PARK.
I AGREE. THEY ARE GOING TO CROWD RV'S INTO IT AND SPOIL IT.
BUT, I'M AFRAID THE DAMAGE IS DONE.
AND, MAYOR TOM ASKED IF THE STOP/GO SIGNALS ARE REALLY NECESSARY
FOR THE STREET LEADING OUT OF THE FAREWARE STORE, TRUE VALUE
HARDWARE AND THE CONVENIENCE STORE ONTO HIGHWAY 64 WEST.
I ALSO WONDER IF PEOPLE NEED THEM AND WILL LIKE THEM. BUT, THE
COUNCIL VOTED TO GO AHEAD WITH THEM. THERE WILL BE THREE SHORT-SPACED SIGNALS BETWEEN McDONALDS AND HIGHWAY 61.
AFTER THE MEETING, COUNCILMAN GALEN SAUNDERS TOLD KMAQ THAT
HE WILL NOT RUN FOR RE-ELECTION IN NOVEMBER. HE WILL BE FINISHING FIVE YEARS ON THE COUNCIL. SAUNDERS SAID HE'S HAD A GOOD RUN, BUT FELT IT WAS TIME TO LET SOMEONE ELSE STEP UP TO THE POSITION.
I THINK HE'S DONE A GOOD JOB. GOOD, COMMON SENSE THINKER.
THAT MEANS THERE WILL BE FOUR SEATS ON THE COUNCIL OPEN THIS FALL.
THE SEATS OF TIM CLARK, JASON HUTE, GALEN SAUNDERS AND MARSHA
MEYERS. I HEARD CLARK WILL NOT RUN AGAIN AND ALSO HEARD HUTE IS RUNNING FOR MAYOR, SO WE INDEED MAY HAVE 4 NEW COUNCILMEN
ON JANUARY 1ST.
THE ST. LOUIS CARDNIALS ARE HOT...VERY HOT! WE'RE PRETTY HAPPY ABOUT THAT HERE AT KMAQ. THEY PLAY THE DODGERS AGAIN TONIGHT.
DISAPPOINTING SPORTS NEWS TODAY FROM MINNESOTA. BRETT WILL BE BACK...WITH THE VIKINGS. FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD!
I PREDICT SAGE WILL STILL PLAY A LOT!

QUITE A FEW YEARS AGO, HARLAN AND JUDY TONDERUM BOUGHT AN OLD
STONE FARM HOME JUST SOUTH OF MAQUOKETA ON WHAT IS NOW OLD HIGHWAY 61. THEY RESTORED IT INSIDE AND OUTSIDE. (I'VE NEVER BEEN IN IT, BUT HAVE BEEN TOLD ITS LOVELY) THEN JUDY PLANTED FLOWERS AND MORE FLOWERS.
THIS RURAL SETTING IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL IN JACKSON COUNTY.
LOTS OF WORK FOR JUDY. NO WEEDS. JUDY IS A JACKSON COUNTY MASTER
GARDNER AND MONTHY IS ON KMAQ TO TALK GARDENING. NEXT TIME YOU
VISIT MAQUOKETA, DRIVE BY. YOU WON'T THE STONE HOME AND FLOWERS!
THIS IS MORE OR LESS THE FRONT,NORTH, MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE HOME. CLICK-ON THE THREE PHOTOS TO ENLARGE THEM....AND ENJOY!

IF I WERE TO PAN MY CAMERA AROUND TO THE NORTH SIDE OF HOUSE, I WOULD GET A PHOTO OF A NICE BARN AND GOOD LOOKING HORSES. JUDY LIKES HER FLOWERS....HARLAN LIKES HIS HORSES.
AND..NOTE THE BEAUTIFUL STAND OF CORN BEHIND THE FENCE. PROOF THAT IOWA HAS THE BEST IN THE WORLD.....AND THIS YEAR, HEADING FOR A RECORD CROP.

THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD HAS AGREED TO RAISE RATES FOR THE USE OF THEIR FACILITIES, STARTING THIS FALL, LIKE THE GYMS AND CLASSROOMS....FOR NON-SCHOOL GROUPS. AN EXAMPLE: RENT THE NEW GYM (CIVIC OR RELIGIOUS GROUPS) AT $200 FOR THE DAY. BUT, FOR PRIVATE, COMMERCIAL OR FUND RAISING EVENTS,THE COST WOULD BE $250 A DAY. A COMPLETE LIST OF FEES, INCLUDING FOR COMPUTER LAB, KITCHEN, HIGH SCHOOL COMMONS AREA, AND WEIGHT ROOM, IS AVAILABLE AT THE DISTRICT OFFICE.
AND HERE IN JACKSON COUNTY, A RURAL BELLEVUE MAN GOT TRIPLE WHAT HE HAD PLANNED WHEN HIS RED-ANGUS MIX COW GAVE BIRTH TO TRIPLETS SUNDAY NIGHT.
ALL THREE ARE HEALTHY. AN IOWA STATE VET SAID HE HAS SEEN ONLY ONE TRIPLETS BIRTH IN 25 YEARS IN NORTHEAST IOWA. VERY UNUSUAL.... AND MORE UNUSUAL WHEN THEY ARE ALL HEALTHY. BORN AT RON SIEVERDING'S FARM
NORTH OF BELLEVUE.
AND HERE'S AN UNUSUAL FIRE STORY. YESTERDAY, THE MAQUOKETA FIREMEN WERE CALLED TO A VEHICLE FIRE AT THE CAVES STATE PARK NORTHWEST OF MAQUOKETA. WHEN THEY ARRIVED, THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE, BUT IT WAS LOCKED AND THE OCCUPANTS LEFT TO GO INTO THE CAVES.
FIREMEN SOMEHOW GOT THE HOOD OPEN AND PUT OUT THE FIRE. IT WAS A VEHICLE FROM SCOTT COUNTY. THE OCCUPANTS MUST HAVE BEEN SO EXCITED ABOUT GOING THROUGH THE CAVES, THEY LEFT THE CAR IN A HURRY AND
DIDN'T SEE THE SMOKE. APPARENTLY, A PASSERBY PHONED THE FIREMEN.
LEON MORRIS (WITH HIS SON) IS VISTING HIS PARENTS, MORRIE AND DOROTHY, THIS WEEK. THE RETIRED ARMY WARRANT OFFICER, AND THEN COMMERCIAL AIRLINE PILOT, LIVES IN DALLAS AREA.
HAD A NICE VISIT LAST NIGHT AT THE HOME OF DR. CRAIG ROSE AND WIFE
CHERYL ,IN DUBUQUE. THEY MOVED FROM MAQUOKETA OVER 30 YEARS AGO
CRAIG IS STILL SEEING PATIENTS 4 DAYS A WEEK. AND BOTH ARE ENJOYING THEIR TWO DAUGHTER'S (DUBUQUE AND OHIO) FAMILIES INCLUDING GRANDKIDS.
ENJOY THE WEEKEND AHEAD.

IT'S WEDNESDAY AND WE'VE HAD BEAUTIFUL WEATHER ALL WEEK ...
AND SAME EXPECTED FOR REST OF WEEK. SUNNY, NO RAIN AND
HIGH IN 80'S WITH A BREEZE.
THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MUNICIPAL ENTERPRISES COMMITTEE
MET YESTERDAY AND WILL BE ASKING THE FULL COUNCIL TO ENACT A NEW
ORDINANCE WHICH WOULD PROHIBIT APARTMENTS ON THE FIRST FLOOR
OF BUSINESS BUILDINGS IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA. THIS CAME ABOUT BECAUSE
AN OWNER IS PLANNING TO DO THIS. BELLEVUE HAS AN ORDINANCE LIKE THIS.
THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD IS LIKELY TO OFFER EARLY RETIREMENT
FOR EMPLOYEES WHO QUALIFY THIS YEAR. LAST YEAR THE BOARD DID
NOT OFFER IT. SUPT. KIN HUCKSTADT SAID 60 EMPLOYEES WOULD
BE ELIGIBLE. IT IS A WAY TO LOWER THE BUDGET.
CITY COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING TODAY TO DISCUSS THE EMERALD ASH
BORER, PLUS A COUPLE OTHER THINGS.
NOTHING ELSE! BUSY, BUSY! CHECK BACK TOMORROW.

GENO'S PIZZA......STARTED OUT IN A SMALL BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN PRESTON IN 1974 WHERE PART OF THE GROCERY STORE IS NOW. ABOUT 2 AND 1/2 YEARS LATER, GENE CAMP PURCHASED THE LAND EAST OF TOWN AND BUILDT THE HOUSE
AND PUT THE PIZZA RESTAURANT ON THE FIRST FLOOR AND THE LIVING QUARTERS ON THE SECOND FLOOR. OVER THE YEARS, SEVERAL ADDITIONS WERE
MADE TO THE PIZZA RESTAURANT. AND... THE FAMILY HOME (QUITE A FEW YEARS BACK) CAME ABOUT AFTER AN OLD HOUSE WAS MOVED UP THE HILL AT THE SOUTH EDGE OF PRESTON AND ADDED ON TO. GENO'S IS OPEN TUESDAY THROUGH
SUNDAY (CLOSED MONDAYS) AND HAS BEEN A FAMILY FAVORITE FOR 35 YEARS!

GENE CAMP.....GENO......JUST FINISHING UP ANOTHER DELICIOUS PIZZA IN HIS
VERY LARGE PIZZA KITCHEN. HAS TO BE LARGE AS HIS PLACE HAS SEATING FOR 225 PEOPLE (WHEN HE OPENED 35 YEARS AGO, THERE WAS SEATING FOR 25) AND ALSO THERE IS A DRIVE-UP WINDOW. THE CAMPS HAVE 6 CHILDREN AND
ALL HAVE WORKED FOR DAD OVER THE YEARS AND TWO OR THREE STILL DO.
PLUS, HE HAS HIRED HUNDREDS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OVER THE YEARS.
THERE ARE FIVE ROOMS TO ENJOY PIZZA, STARTING WITH THE GAME/POOL ROOM
WHEN YOU COME IN THE MAIN DOOR. THEN YOU WALK THROUGH THE BAR ROOM,
AND THEN TO THE LEFT, STRAIGHT AHEAD, OR TO THE RIGHT IS MORE SEATING.
THERE ARE THREE BALL DIAMONDS TOO, AND A KITCHEN AND SEATING FOR THOSE, PLUS OUTDOOR GAMES FOR THE KIDS. GENOS IS A BIG PLACE. SUNDAY NIGHT IS THE BUSIEST NIGHT OF THE WEEK. GENE HAS BEEN ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY
AND HAS SERVED IN THE SCHOOL BOARD AND AS MAYOR. HE'S 62 AND PLANS
TO BE SERVING PIZZA ANOTHER 8 YEARS.

MAX HAS LOTS OF ENTRIES ON THE KMAQ GUEST BOOK. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ON MAQUOKETA HISTORY, EMAIL MAX AT lajmaka1@cableone.net

HE WAS A RADIO OPERATOR-TECHNICIAN DURING WWII. FOLLOWING THE NORTH AFRICA INVASION, HE MADE OTHERS AT SICILY, ITALY, AND FRANCE. HIS LAST INVASION WAS OF OKINAWA ON EASTER SUNDAY, 1945 WHERE A JAPANESE SUICIDE BOMBER BARELY MISSED HIS OUTFIT.

HE WOUND THE STARTER ROPE AROUND THE STARTER PULLEY, GAVE THE ROPE A YANK, AND THE ENGINE
TOOK RIGHT OFF AND SOUNDED LIKE A NEW ONE. IT WAS A GOOD 50 YEARS OLD.

SAID THEY HAVE A YOUTH SUSPECT AND WILL GIVE HIM A LIE DETECTOR TEST.
CURNUTT WAS NOT INJURED AND NOTHING WAS TAKEN FROM THE HOME.

BREITBACH'S COUNTRY DINING, IOWA'S OLDEST BAR AND GRILL, RE-OPENED SATURDAY AT BALLTOWN. IT BURNED DOWN TWICE IN THE LAST TWO YEARS.
THIS TIME THERE IS A LARGE WATER TANK IN BASEMENT AND A SPRINKLER SYSTEM. THEY SERVE HUNDREDS ALMOST EVERY DAY. SOMETIMES THOUSANDS
OVER THE WEKEND.
THE WEEKEND (FRIDAY,SATURDAY AND SUNDAY) WAS BUSY AT THE NEW CLINTON ENGINES MUSUEM HERE IN MAQUOKETA THE MUSEUM HOSTED A VINTAGE GARDEN TRACTOR CLUB EVENT ON THE PARKING LOT BEHIND THE MUSEUM. IT WAS FREE. MOST ON DISPLAY WERE AROUND 50 YEARS OLD AND MANY HAD A CLINTON ENGINE. THE WEATHER WAS PERFECT. I ASKED ONE GUY IF HIS CLINTON ENGINE THAT I POINTED AT WOULD START. HE WOUND THE STARTER ROPE AROUND THE STARTER PULLEY, GAVE THE ROPE A YANK, AND THE ENGINE
TOOK RIGHT OFF AND SOUNDED LIKE A NEW ONE. IT WAS A GOOD 50 YEARS OLD.
THANKS TO CHARLES AND BONNIE MITCHELL FOR GETTING THIS EVENT TO MAQUOKETA. UNFORTUNATELY,IT COMPETED AGAINST HE FAIR AND I'M SURE THAT CUT DOWN ATTENDANCE A BIT. CHECK A FEW PHOTOS THAT I TOOK BELOW.
THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT.

LOOK LIKE ANY OF THE GARDEN TRACTORS IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD? IF NOT,
IT IS BECAUSE THIS ONE IS AROUND 50 YEARS OLD AND IT FEATURED A CLINTON ENGINE AROUND 50 YEARS AGO, MADE RIGHT HERE IN MAQUOKETA. BACK THEN, CLINTON ENGINES WAS THE WORLD'S LARGEST MANUFACTURE OF SMALL ENGINES.
THIS WAS ON DISPLAY SUNDAY AND I BELIEVE THIS ONE WAS DONATED TO THE
CLINTON ENGIENS MUSEUM.

BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY IN MAQUOKETA!
AT THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR YESTERDAY, FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR,
ATTENDANCE WAS DOWN. THE SATURDAY ATTENDANCE WAS 3,167, NEARLY
15-HUNDRED LESS THAN LAST YEAR. THE ALL TIME RECORD, IN THE 80'S,
WAS OVER 5,000, ON A SATURDAY THAT INCLUDED STOCK CAR RACES.
THIS YEAR, THE SATURDAY DOUBLE-HEADER COUNTRY MUSIC SHOW WAS
NOT INCLUDED IN THE GATE ADMISSION. ANYONE WANTING TO SEE THE
SHOWS FROM THE GRANDSTAND HAD TO PAY EXTRA AT THE GRANDSTAND
RAMPS. IT WAS $10 FOR THE GRANDSTAND WINGS, $15 FOR THE COVERED GRANDSTAND AND $20 TO STAND DOWN BY THE STAGE. I WASN'T ABLE TO
WATCH THE SHOWS BECAUSE I WAS ON-THE-AIR, BUT I DID CHECK AND THE
GRANDSTAND WAS HALF EMPTY. WEATHER WAS VERY GOOD AND NOT A
FACTOR. TODAY IS THE FINAL DAY OF THE FAIR AND AGAIN, LOTS OF
THINGS ON THE SCHEDULE, TOPPED OFF BY THE "NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION" EVENT IN FRONT OF THE GRANDSTAND AT 6 P.M. FFA CLUBS HAVE DID A NEAT JOB
OF PAINTING OLD COMBINES FOR COMPETITION TONIGHT. BECAUSE OF NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION LAST YEAR, THE SUNDAY ATTENDANCE WAS THE HIGHEST
OF THE FIVE DAYS. WE'LL SEE IF THE SAME THING HAPPENS THIS YEAR.
COME TO THE FAIR!
THE BEEF SHOW WAS HELD YESTERDAY AND THE CHAMPION BEEF OF THE SHOW....
WAS NOT A STEER....BUT A HEIFER. THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN OFTEN. THE
WINNER WAS A 1128 POUND CROSSBRED COMMERCIAL HEIFER, NAMED STUB.
SHE WAS SHOWN BY LINDSAY MUSEHEART OF MILES. IT WAS A WINNER TOO OF 4 EARLIER SHOWS THIS YEAR.
THE RESERVE CHAMPION YESTERDAY WAS A STEER, SHOWN BY NICOLE TRENKAMP OF PRESTON.
THE BILL RILEY TALENT SHOW WAS LAST NIGHT, WITH THE WINNER GOING TO THE STATE FAIR. GOING TO THE STATE FAIR FROM MAQUOKETA, JORDYN SCHULZ, AGE 13 AND MIKAELA PAULSEN-BROWN, AGE 17, BOTH OF MAQUOKETA. THEY
DID A LYRICAL DANCE...AND WON $75. SHERI MELVOLD, KMAQ NEWS DIRECTOR, WAS THE EMCEE AGAIN THIS YEAR.
THE TWO WINNERS OF THE ATTENDANCE DRAWING LAST NIGHT, EACH GETTING $250, WERE: ANGIE LEPPERT OF MAQUOKETA AND MARK LIPPENS OF MAQUOKETA.
HAVE A GOOD SUNDAY.
