PERFECT DAY TODAY....SUNNY....LIGHT WIND...IN 70'S.
WILL BE GREAT NIGHT FOR THE FAIR PARADE AND AT THE FAIRGROUNDS AFTER.
CHANCE OF RAIN TOMORROW.
MAQUOKETA HAS RECEIVED A $99,000 GRANT TO ASSIST WITH BUSINESS
DEVELOPMENT. THE MAQUOKETA INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE SERVICE, OR MIDAS, WHICH IS THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ARM OF THE CITY, HAS RECEIVED THE GRANT. CITY MANAGER BRIAN WAGNER SAID THE MONEY
MOST LIKELY WILL BE USED AS A REVOLVING LOAN FUND, SIMILIAR TO ONE USED BY JACKSON COUNTY. THAT LOAN FUND ALLOWS BUSINESS OWNERS TO APPLY FOR
LOW INTEREST LOANS TO START UP COMPANIES OR EXPAND.
THE MAQUOKETA HOSPITAL BOARD MET YESTERDAY AND VOTED TO ELIMINATE
TWO DEPARTMENTS AND ONE COMMUNITY SERVICE. IT MOVE IS ESTIMATED TO SAVE THE HOSPITAL $445,000 A YEAR AND WILL PUT ABOUT 35 PEOPLE OUT OF
WORK. THERE ARE 196 ON THE PAYROLL AT THIS TIME. BY NOVEMBER 1ST, THE HOSPITAL WILL ELIMINATE THE DIALYSIS UNIT, THE SKILLED NURSING LONG TIME CARE UNIT, AND WILL NO LONGER COOK MEALS FOR THE MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAM IN MAQUOKETA. AN EFFORT WILL BE MADE TO FIND ANOTHER
PLACE TO PROVIDE THE MEALS. ABOUT 45 RESIDENTS NOW GET MEALS MONDAY-FRIDAY. THIS PAST SPRING, THE SATURDAY AND SUNDAY MEALS WERE STOPPED BY THE HOSPITAL. HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR CURT COLEMAN SAID HIS
OFFICE IS WORKING WITH THE FAMILIES OF THE 14 RESIDENTS AFFECTED
BY CLOSING THE LONGTERM UNIT. IT IS HOPED THEY CAN BE MOVED TO A DIFFERENT PLACE BY NOVEMBER. THERE ARE TWO NURSING HOMES IN MAQUOKETA PLUS OTHERS IN THE AREA THAT MAY BE ABLE TO ACCOMODATE
THE 14. THE DIALYSIS UNIT AT THE HOSPITAL OPENED IN 2002 AND CAN
ACCOMODATE 22 PATIENTS. BUT RECENTLY, THE NUMBERS HAVE DECLINED SO THERE ARE 14 PATIENTS NOW. COLEMAN SAID DOCTORS ARE NOW DOING A BETTER JOB OF MANAGING HYPERTENSION AND PATIENTS ARE NOT HAVING TO
GO ON DIALYSIS. HE SAID NUMBERS HAVE ALSO DROPPED IN OTHER HOSPITALS IN THIS AREA.
ONE PERSON WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WITH POSSIBLE INJURIES FOLLOWING A ONE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT AROUND 1:30 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON JUST OVER A MILE NORTH OF MAQUOKETA. THE DRIVER, JOY BAILEY-CARTER, 55, OF MAQUOKETA,
LOST CONTROL WHILE DRIVING NORTH ON HIGHWAY 61. SHE WAS CHARGED WITH FAILURE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL AND DAMAGES CAME TO AROUND $5,500 TO HERE 2003 MODEL CAR.
A MAQUOKETA WOMAN BACKED INTO AN RTA BUS YESTERDAY MORNING.
CAROL MILLER, AGE 40, WAS BACKING OUT OF A PRIVATE DRIVE ON EAST QUARRY
AND HIT THE RTA BUS DRIVEN BY JEFFREY CLARK, 44, OF MAQUOKETA.
THE MONSTER TRUCK WAR IS AT 8:30 TONIGHT AFTER THE PARADE.
IT'S FAIRTIME IN MAQUOKETA. WISH YOUR WERE HERE.

THE MAQUOKETA FIRE DEPARTMENT SATURDAY HELD A TRAINING SESSION
ON THE CORNER OF OLIVE AND EAST APPLE STREET. THEY BURNED DOWN AN OLD TWO STORY, TWO APARTMENT HOME, THAT DATED BACK TO AROUND
THE LATE 1880'S. HERE THE FIRE HAD JUST STARTED, SHORTLY BEFORE NOON.
FIREMEN WERE AT THE SCENE MUCH OF THE MORNING, DOING OTHER TRAINING EXERCISES WITH THE BUILDING. IT HAD TO BE STRIPPED OF SIDING, WHICH
CONTAINED ASBESTOS. AND, BY LATE IN THE AFTERNOON, THE TRAINING SESSION WAS COMPLETED. COOL WEATHER HELPED MAKE IT A GOOD DAY
FOR THE FIREMEN'S PROJECT. LOTS OF PEOPLE HEARD ABOUT THE CONTROLLED BURN ON KMAQ AND OBSERVED THE FIREMEN FROM A DISTANCE. ESPECIALLY ENTERTAINING FOR THE KIDS.

THEY STARTED PAINTING THE MAQUOKETA WATER TOWER UP BY THE HIGH SCHOOL THIS WEEK. ACTUALLY, NO PAINTING YET, JUST SANDBLASTING OFF THE OLD PAINT. A SIX-WEEK PROJECT. CLICK ON PHOTO TO ENLARGE. YOU CAN
SEE SOME MEN WORKING ON THE UPPER RIGHT JUST UNDER TANK. AT COFFEE THIS MORNING, DR. MELVIN BERNARD (retired optomitrist) SAID HE LIVED NEAR THERE WHEN TOWER WAS PUT UP AND THAT A MAN FELL FROM IT AND DIED.
I DID NOT REMEMER THAT. ABOUT 30 YEARS AGO.

SUNNY THIS MORNING, CLOUDY AND COOL THIS AFTERNOON, BUT NO RAIN SO FAR.
STILL POSSIBLE TONIGHT AND THEN NICE TOMORROW.
THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS LOST TO DAVENPORT ASSUMPTION LAST NIGHT AT DEWITT IN TOURNAMENT SOFTBALL. THE FIVE ERRORS DIDN'T HELP. BUT, NO SENIORS ON THE TEAM, SO THE CARDINALS SHOULD BE VERY GOOD AGAIN NEXT YEAR.
A RURAL MAQUOKETA MAN WANTS TO GET ANSWERS CONCERNING A SMELLY OVERFLOW INTO A COUNTY DITCH ON DARK HOLLOW ROAD. THIS MORNING, AT THE SUPERVISORS MEETING AT THE COURTHOUSE, WAYNE DAGUE BROUGHT IN A JAR FILLED WITH DARK WATER HE SAID CAME FROM THE COUNTY DITCH. HE OFFERED TO OPEN THE JAR BUT THE SUPERVISORS SAID NO. DAGUE SAID THE WATER IS FOUL SMELLING. IT IS SUSPECTED THE PROBLEM STEMS FROM THE NEARBY JACKSON COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY. MARTHA GANTZER-KUETER, ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT TO THE SUPERVISORS, SAID SHE WAS TOLD THE COUNTY HAS NO CONTROL OVER ANIMAL WASTE. DAGUE SAID HE'S FRUSTRATED THE ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN SOLVED AFTER A YEAR OF QUESTIONS. HE ALSO SAID THE HUMANE SOCIETY NEEDS TO MOW ITS NOXIOUS WEEDS.
THERE WILL BE A MIDNIGHT SHOWING TONIGHT AT THE VOY 3 THEATRE OF THE NEW HARRY POTTER MOVIE. ALREADY OVER 50 TICKETS HAVE BEEN SOLD.
A FIRST FOR THE THEATRE. IN LARGER CITIES, MIDNIGHT SHOWS OF A
MEGA MOVIE ARE QUITE COMMON. THIS MOVIE IS EXPECTED, LIKE THE OTHER POTTER MOVIES, TO BE A BIG HIT.
LAST WEEK, THEY SPRAY PAINTED ALL THREE FORMER BEIDLER IMPLEMENT BUILDINGS SOUTH OF TOWN. MUST MEAN SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN WITH THEM! KEEP TUNED.
THE ALL STAR GAME IS ON KMAQ TONIGHT AT 7.
GO NATIONAL LEAGUE!

RAINING ON AND OFF TODAY AND COOL.
SOME ADDITIONAL CAMPING SPOTS MAY BE ADDED AT THE HORSESHOE POND PARK AT THE SOUTH EDGE OF MAQUOKETA. THEY WOULD BE PLACED IN THE INTERIOR CIRCLE OF THE DRIVE THROUGH THE PARK. THE PARK IS POPULAR WITH CAMPERS.
I PERSONALLY WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE CENTER REMAIN OPEN AND INSTEAD,
MAKE EXTRA SPOTS ON EACH SIDE OF REST ROOM BUILDING AND ADD A FEW EXTRA
AT THE END OF THE PRESENT ONES, WHERE SPACE IS AVAILABLE. I THINK
THE CENTER COULD BE ENHANCED WITH MORE THINGS FOR THE CAMPERS
TO WATCH AND USE (GAZEBO, PICNIC SHELTER, WATERFALL, VOLLEYBALL COURT) INSTEAD OF LOOKING ACROSS THE ROAD TO ANOTHER RV.
FAMOUS FARM BROADCASTERS ORION SAMUELSON AND MAX ARMSTRONG HAVE A POPULAR NATION-WIDE WEEKEND 60-MINUTE FARM SHOW CALLED "WEEK IN AGRI-BUSINESS", THAT IS AIRED ON THE RFDTV NETWORK (NASHVILLE AND
BRANSON). AND, IN ADDITION TO FARM NEWS AND MARKETS, THEY DO RURAL
AMERICA SPECIAL SEGMENTS. LAST WEEK, THEY AIRED A FEATURE ON MY 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE. NICE LITTLE SEGMENT, STARRING ME OF COURSE.
IF YOU WANT TO SEE IT, GO TO www.agbizweek.com AND CLICK ON SPOTLIGHT STORY.
THIS WEEK, THEY WILL DO A STORY ON MAQUOKETA. A CREW OF 4 WAS IN TOWN A COUPLE WEEKS AGO FOR A DAY AND DID THE FILMING AND INTERVIEWING.
IT WILL BE AIRED ON THE RFDTV CABLE/DISH NETWORK AT: 7:00 A.M. SATURDAY....
SUNDAY AT 5:00 A.M. AND 8:00 P.M. AND MONDAY AT 8:00 A.M.
ON THE STORK REPORT: WHITNEY AND ANDREW BURMEISTER OF LOST NATION ARE PARENTS OF A GIRL BORN ON JULY 4TH AT THE MAQUOKETA HOSPITAL.
MATERNAL GRANDPARENTS ARE TERRY AND MADELINE WIDEL OF MAQUOKETA.
ANOTHER NEW PHOTO BELOW.

THE JULY 4TH WEEKEND AROUND HERE WAS PRETTY GOOD. SATURDAY, UNTIL
ABOUT 4 IN AFTERNOON, WE HAD A LITTLE RAIN ON AND OFF.....ABOUT 1/4 INCH.
ALL PARADES WERE HELD. AND THEY HAD STOCK CAR RACES IN THE LATE AFTERNOON. THE RACES GOT OVER AT 10 AND THE FIREWORKS STARTED SHORTLY AFTER IN FRONT OF THE GRANDSTAND. AND, IT WAS A NICE 20-MINUTE FIREWORKS DISPLAY. NANCY AND I ENJOYED IT FROM THE GRANDSTAND, BUT OTHERS
VIEWED THE DISPLAY IN VARIOUS PLACES AROUND THE FAIRGROUNDS. THE FIREWORKS WERE PUT ON BY BOB WAGENER, STOCK CAR RACES PROMOTER.
THE MAQUOKETA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ALSO RAISED SOME MONEY (KMAQ CHIPPED IN $100) FROM CHAMBER MEMBERS TO HELP WITH THE COST OF THE SHOW.
TODAY...NICE DAY... HOT AND IN LOW 80'S. REST OF THE WEEK SHOULD BE PRETTY GOOD TOO. THE CEDAR COUNTY FAIR STARTS WEDNESDAY AND THE WYOMING FAIR IS THIS WEEKEND. ALSO THE MILES THRESHERS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL
THRESHING DAYS.
THE BELLEVUE CHAMBER HAD A NEW-CAR RAFFLE AND NEW CHEVY FROM TILL'S GARAGE IN BELLEVUE WAS WON BY A YOUNG TEACHER AT BELLEVUE MARQUETTE,
JESSICA MEDIGNER.
CLINTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE'S NEW MAQUOKETA CENTER OPENED TODAY WITH LIMITED ACTIVITIES. IT WILL BE OPEN FROM 8 A.M. UNTIL 4:30 P.M. MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY. A GRAND OPENING IS SCHEDULED FOR 3 P.M. ON MONDAY, AUGUST 3RD. AND, ALSO MOVING INTO THE BUILDING, THE IOWA AT WORK AND WORKFORCE DEVLOPMENT OFFICES, FORMERLY ON PLATT STREET. IT IS A VERY NICE BUILDING. WILL BE A GREAT ASSET TO MAQUOKETA.
FOURTEEN FIRE DEPARTMENTS BATTLED FOURTH OF JULY BLAZE IN AN OLD SCHOOL BUILDING IN LOWDEN THAT HAD BEEN MADE INTO APARTMENTS.
MAQUOKETA FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED TO BRING THEIR AERIAL TRUCK.
THERE WERE FIVE APARTMENTS OCCUPIED AND EVERYONE GOT OUT SAFELY.
DON'T LET YOUR VEHICLE UNLOCKED. ON THE POLICE BLOTTER, ROBERT FELTES ON SOUTH VERMONT REPORTED THAT SOMEONE TOOK AN IPOD FROM HIS VEHICLE.
CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT.
WE HAVE NO OBITUARIES TODAY, FROM MAQUOKETA OR AREA FUNERAL HOMES.
GOOD LONGTIME KMAQ LISTENERS HAROLD AND SANDRA COLLISTER OF MAQUOKETA CELEBRATED THEIR 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY YESTERDAY, WITH AN OPEN HOUSE AT THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH. CONGRATULATIONS.
YES...SANDRA'S MUCH OLDER BROTHER IS STILL LIVING SOMEWHERE IN CENTRAL IOWA.
