YESTERDAY WAS A NICE DAY, WITH HIGH OF 40. GOT DOWN TO 5 LAST NIGHT AND TODAY, AGAIN IN THE MID 30'S. WEATHER SHOULD BE OKAY FOR NEW YEAR'S EVE AND NEW YEAR'S DAY.

A BALDWIN HOME WAS DAMAGED BY FIRE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON....THE HOME OF KERMIT BODENHOFER ON 49TH AVENUE, RURAL BALDWIN. MAQUOKETA FIRE CHIEF MARK BECK SAID ONE BEDROOM WAS DESTROYED. BALDWIN FIRST RESPONDERS WERE CALLED AND THEY CALLED MAQUOKETA SOON AFTER AND BY THE TIME MAQUOKETA ARRIVED, THE THREE BALDWIN FIREFIGHTERS HAD THE FIRE NEARLY PUT OUT. BECK SAID THE CAUSE IS NOT KNOWN AND THE FIRE IS NOT SUSPICIOUS.
BODENHOFER DID NOT HAVE INSURANCE. DAMAGES LISTED AT $10,000. FIREMEN SPENT AN HOUR AT THE FIRE.

FROM JANUARY THROUGH NOVEMBER, WERE: MARY GREEN, CARL MUHLHAUSEN,

HERE AT KMAQ, WE HAD FUN CELEBRATING OUR 50TH. THE KMAQ FLOAT WAS

IN DECEMBER, THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL DISTRICT MISSED TWO DAYS BECAUSE OF BAD WEATHER. ONE DAY WILL BE MADE UP ON TUESDAY, APRIL 14TH AND THE SECOND DAY WILL BE MADE UP ON MAY 26TH. ANY ADDITIONAL DAYS MISSED THIS YEAR WILL BE ADDED TO THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

A JACKSON COUNTY SQUAD CAR WAS HIT WHILE PARKED NEAR THE DEPUTY'S HOME TUESDAY. DEPUTY RUSS LONG'S SQUAD CAR WAS PARKED NEAR MILROSE AND NILES STREETS IN MAQUOKETA TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND WAS HIT BY MATT BOPES, AGE 18, OF MAQUOKETA, WHO FAILED TO NEGOTIATE A TURN AND HIT THE PARKED SQUAD CAR, WITH NO ONE INSIDE. $1,500 DAMAGE TO THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT 2006 CHEVY AND NO DAMAGE TO BOPES CAR. NO INJURIES AND NO CHARGES FILED.

A GAS DRIVE-OFF TUESDAY AT CASEY'S ON EAST PLATT. $10 PUMPED IN THE VEHICLE AND NO PAYMENT RECEIVED.

FARM LAND VALUES UP AGAIN THIS YEAR. IN JACKSON COUNTY, 10.9 PERCENT.
AN AVERAGE ACRE IN 2007 WAS WORTH $3,501 AND THIS YEAR, UP TO $3,882.

COREY MANNING AND JENNY HAIFLEY OF MAQUOKETA ARE PARENTS OF A GIRL BORN DEC 11TH AT FINLEY IN DUBUQUE. GRANDPARENTS ARE STEVE AND CHERYL MANNING OF MAQUOKETA.

ROSE FRANTZEN, FAMOUS MAQUOKETA ARTIST, WAS SELECTED BY CONGRESSMAN BRUCE BRALEY TO DESIGN AN ORNAMENT FOR THE WHITE H OUSE CHRISTMAS TREE.
AND SHE WAS INVITED BY FIRST LADY LAURA BUSH TO A TWO HOUR RECEPTION IN THE STATE DINING ROOM BUT HAD TO CANCEL HER TRIP TO THE WHITE HOUSE
BECAUSE OF BAD WEATHER.

BAD HOUSE FIRE THIS MORNING AT RURAL ANDREW. STARTED BY WOOD BURNING STOVE. MAQUOKETA CALLED TO ASSIST ANDREW. ALSO HELPING....SPRINGBROOK, LAMOTTE AND BELLEVUE DEPARTMENTS. NO ONE INJURED.

A MARION COUPLE WON A MILLION DOLLARS IN THE LOTTERY OVER THE WEEKEND
AND PICKED UP THE CHECK TODAY. HOW ABOUT THAT FOR A CHRISTMAS
PRESENT.

MAQUOKETA TOOK 4TH IN THE SABER INVITATIONAL WRESTLING MEET AT DEWITT SATURDAY.

REVENUE AT THE HOSPITAL IS DOWN BECAUSE OF THE ECONOMY. THE BIG
BUILDING PROJECT, EXCEPT FOR THE NEW PHARMACY, HAS BEEN PUT ON
HOLD. DR. PEDRO ATIENZA WILL BE STAYING AN EXTRA YEAR AS SURGEON,BEFORE RETIRING. BEEN A BUSY MONTH FOR BABIES THOUGH.
ABOUT 10 BORN AND DELIVERED BY DR. KOOB.

DAC, INC. TOLD THE SUPERVISORS THAT RECYCLED PAPER BROUGHT $75 A TON
IN OCTOBER AND NOW JUST $5. THE CHINESE MARKET IS GONE NOW AND
MAY COME BACK. DAC, INC. ASKED SUPERVISORS IF BALES OF PAPER COULD BE STORED IN THE EMPTY S & H BUILDING IN THE INDUSTRIAL PARK, OWNED BY THE COUNTY, UNTIL THE MARKET IMPROVES. SINCE THE SUPERVISORS HAVE NO BUYER AT THIS TIME, THEY AGREED.

IT IS ON OUR KMAQ FRONT COUNTER AND GETS MUCH ATTENTION. LOTS OF WORK WENT INTO THIS MASTERPIECE. THANK YOU MICHELLE. TO ENLARGE THE PHOTO,CLICK-ON IT ONCE. TO MAKE IT EVEN LARGER, CLICK-ON A SECOND TIME. THE BASKET AUCTION EVENT WAS HELD AT THE NEW CLINTON ENGINES MUSEUM IN MAQUOKETA. ONE OF THE

CLOUDY TODAY AND IN THE 20'S. TONIGHT, SIX OR MORE INCHES OF SNOW IS COMING.

SOME RESIDENTS AND BUSINESS PLACES (INCLUDING KMAQ) HAD A COUPLE BRIEF POWER OUTAGES AROUND 2:30 THIS AFTERNOON. ENGINEERS WORKING AT THE MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL UTILITY PLANT INADVERTENTLY PULLED A FUSE WHICH TRIPPED A CURCUIT. THE FIRST TIME, ONE-THIRD OF THE CITY WAS AFFECTED AND THE SECOND TIME, ONLY A HANDFUL OF CUSTOMERS EXPERIENCED THE BRIEF POWER OUTAGE.

MAQUOKETA MAYOR,AND KMAQ ENGINEER,TOM MESSERLI HAD A LIGHT HEART ATTACK EARLY LAST NIGHT AND WAS TAKEN FROM THE MAQUOKETA HOSPITAL TO CARDIOVASCULAR MEDICINE AT
GENESIS EAST IN DAVENPORT WHERE THEY DID A "BALLOON" PROCEDURE AROUND 10 LAST NIGHT, PUTTING IN TWO "STINTS" OF A NEARLY CLOGGED ARTERY. HE'S BACK HOME THIS AFTERNOON
AND FEELING GOOD. HE'S HAD SOME PROBLEMS IN THE PAST. PROBABLY THE "STRESS" OF
BEING MAYOR....OR KEEPING KMAQ ON-THE-AIR. GLAD HE'S DOING GOOD! NOT SURE YET IF HE WILL DO HIS SATURDAY MORNING SHIFT ON KMAQ-FM FROM 6:30 TO 9 A.M.

JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING IN TOWN WAS CANCELLED LAST NIGHT.

BIG FIRE IN DOWNTOWN BELLEVUE SUNDAY NIGHT. ON MAN DIED IN AN UPSTAIRS APARTMENT.

IN THE SPECIAL ELECTION YESTERDAY, GOOD VOTER TURNOUT (151)(15.4%) DESPITE THE WEATHER, AND ED TURNEY IS THE NEW FIRST WARD COUNCILMAN. HE GOT 54 VOTES. HE REPLACES MATT WINEGAR WHO MOVED FROM THE CITY. LORI CROUCH WAS SECOND WITH 32 VOTES.
KIM GALLOWAY, 21. DEB WILHELM, 14. AND DAVE WIERSMA NONE. HE .. AND HIS MOTHER LIVE IN THE WARD, BUT I HEARD BOTH WERE NOT REGISTERED.

GOING TO THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL SOUP SUPPER AND BASKET AUCTION TONIGHT AT THE CLINTON ENGINES MUSEUM. IT WAS POSTPONED TWICE BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER.

BAD FIRE IN DOWNTOWN BELLEVUE OVERNIGHT. SEVEN FIRE DEPARTMENTS, INCLUDING MAQUOKETA, HAD IT OUT BY 5 THIS MORNING. A DOWNTOWN INSURANCE OFFICE ON NORTH 2ND STREET AND FOUR APARTMENTS IN THE TWO FLOORS ABOVE. ONE PERSON DIED IN AN APARTMENT AND THE NAME HAS NOT BEEN ANNOUNCED YET. NO WORD SO FAR ON CAUSE OF FIRE OR WHERE IT STARTED. DAMAGE ESTIMATE, $400,000.

TOMORROW IS ELECTION DAY FOR THE FIRST WARD IN MAQUOKETA, TO FILL THE FIRST WARD COUNCIL SEAT. POLLS OPEN FROM NOON UNTIL 8 P.M. FIVE CANDIDATES.
WHOMEVER WINS WILL TAKE OFFICE IMMEDIATELY AND WILL SERVE UNTIL JANUARY 2012.

CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT.

LAST NIGHT AT THE NEW GYM. MONTICELLO TOOK FIRST AND CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON, 2ND
PLACE. DAKOTA SNYDER TOOK FIRST AT 135 POUNDS. RYAN FLAGEL TOOK FIRST AT 152.
THOMAS MAYBERRY TOOK FIRST AT 160.

WIVES NANCY MUHLHAUSEN AND LINDA GONNER WERE CO-CHAIRMEN OF THE COOKBOOK PROJECT.
THE BOOKS ARE $15 EACH...HARD COVER WITH A RING BINDER. OTHERS CAN BE ADDED LATER. THE BOOK IS DIVIDED INTO SECTIONS WHICH INCLUDE APPETIZERS AND BEVERAGES...SOUPS AND SALADS...VEGETABLES AND SIDE DISHERS...MAIN DISHES...BREADS AND ROLLS...DESSERTS...COOKIES AND CANDY, PLUS MISCELLANEOUS TIPS. ALSO A SECTION FOR CAMPFIRE COOKING AND RECIPES FOR A CROWD. THE BOOK INCLUDES A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT AS WELL AS A ROSTER AND PHOTO OF THE FIREFIGHTERS. $50,000 DEFICIT. ALSO, THE Y HAS AGREED TO RECRUIT 100 NEW MEMBERS AND CUT PART-TIME STAFF HOURS BY $13,500. FRANK KLIPSCH OF THE SCOTT COUNTY YMCA, WHICH
OPERATES THE MAQUOKETA Y FOR THE CITY, SAID MAQUOKETA'S Y NEEDS 900 MEMBERSHIPS TO MAKE THE BUDGET WORK. CURRENTLY THERE ARE 750 MEMBERS AND 150 OF THOSE ARE ON
SCHOLARSHIP. KIRPSCH TOLD MEMBERS OF A COUNCIL STEERING COMMITTEE EARLIER THIS WEEK THAT THEY HAD OVER 900 MEMBERSHIPS WHEN THE Y OPENED A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO, BUT MEMBERSHIP HAS DROPPED DOWN.

THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS HAVE A HOME GAME SATURDAY AFTERNOON, HOSTING WEST DELAWARE.
A TRIPLE HEADER. FRESHMEN AND JV GAMES AT 2 AND THE VARSITY GAME AROUND 3:30.

A CATTLE ROUND-UP WAS HELD IN THE CITY LIMITS OF MAQUOKETA YESTERDAY AFTERNOON
AROUND 3 WHEN THE DOORS OF A LIVESTOCK TRAILER CAME OPEN, FREEING ABOUT 8 HEAD OF CATTLE. THEY ENTERED THE PICKED CORN FIELD ALONG WESTERN AVENUE AND A COUPLE STRAYED INTO THE THOMAS AVENUE AREA. EVENTUALLY, POLICE AND EMPLOYEES OF MAQUOKETA LIVESTOCK SALES WERE ABLE TO ROUND UP THE CATTLE AND RE-LOAD THEM IN THE TRAILER WITHOUT INCIDENT.

THE MAQUOKETA CARDINAL WRESTLING TEAM WILL HOST THE ANNUAL DWIGHT ZIMMERMAN TOURNAMENT TOMORROW NIGHT AT THE HIGH SCHOOL GYM. ACTION ON 4 MATS WILL START AT 5 P.M. TEAMS COMPETING WILL BE: DAVENPORT CENTRAL...DUBUQUE HEMPSTEAD...CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON....MIDLAND OF WYOMING....MONTICELLO....CASCADE....AND MAQUOKETA.

THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS ALSO BEAT INDEPENDENCE FRIDAY NIGHT, 62 TO 42 BUT LOST TO
NORTH SCOTT SATURDAY NIGHT. TOMORROW NIGHT, THEY PLAY DEWITT.

THE WRESTLERS WERE IN A TOURNAMENT SATURDAY. THEY BEAT FOUR TEAMS AND THEN LOST
TO DAVENPORT ASSUMPTION.

THE CLUB HOUSE, A NEW BUSINESS, OPENED TODAY. OWNED BY DAVE WIERSMA.
IT IS LOCATED BEHIND THE EAGLES CLUB....1104 EAST PLATT STREET. OPEN
MONDAY THRU FRIDAY FROM 6 A.M. UNTI 2 A.M. HE CALLS IT THE 3 IN 1 PLACE.
LAUNDRY...GAMES...CAR DETAILING. PLAY CARDS THERE TOO. SOON TO COME,
MUSIC AND DANCING OF ALL KINDS. SNACKS AND REFRESHMENTS ARE AVAILABLE.

HIGH SCHOOL GYM. MAQUOKETA IS 1 AND 1 SO FAR THIS SEASON AND DEWITT IS 2 AND 0.

ALVIN "SLIM" CLASEN, AGE 72, OF BELLEVUE, FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA, DIED YESTERDAY AT THE MAYO CLINIC. SERVICES WILL BE SATURDAY MORNING AT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN BELLEVUE.
AT ONE TIME, HE WORKED FOR THE MAQUOKETA NEWSPAPERS IN THE PRINTING DEPARTMENT.

MAQUOKETA NATIVE ADAM BECK AND HIS CENTERSTAGE VARIETY BAND WILL PERFORM A CONCERT THIS SATURDAY NIGHT, DECEMBER 6TH, AT THE OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER, TO BENEFIT THE 2008 JACKSON COUNTY TOYS FOR TOTS COMPAIGN. THE BAND PLAYS ROCK AND COUNTRY ROCK FROM THE 70'S THROUGH TEH 90'S, COVERING SONGS BY NEIL DIAMOND, THE EAGLES, AND EVEN JOHNNY CASH. AHH...THE FOUR SEASON.

THOUGH IT WAS A MILD SNOWSTORM, SCHOOL KIDS WERE LET OUT EARLY AND WE HAVE HAD OODLES OF CANCELATIONS OF EVENTS SCHEDULED FOR TONIGHT.

BOTH THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS AND BOYS BASKETBALL TEAMS WON THEIR GAME LAST NIGHT.

BEAUTIFUL SUNNY DAY TODAY IN MAQUOKETA...IN THE UPPER 30'S. BUT, DOWN INTO THE TEENS TONIGHT AND SNOW AGAIN TONIGHT AND TOMORROW.

AT THEIR MEETING THIS MORNING, THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS HEARD A REPORT ON MONDAY NIGHT'S PUBLIC HEARING WITH THE JACKSON COUNTY ZONING BOARDD CONCERNING A PROPOSED EXPANSION OF A BIODIESEL PLANT IN MAQUOKETA TOWNSHIP. OWNER GARY
DREW (HE WAS KEY PERSON IN BUILDING THE OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER IN MAQUOKETA)
IS ASKING FOR A CHANGE IN ZONING FROM AGRICULTURE TO M-1 LIGHT INDUSTRIAL.
HE HAS A SMALL PLANT NOW, BUT WANTS TO EXPAND THE OPERATION ON 8 ACRES AT 92ND STREE AND 233RD AVENUE, NORTHEAST OF MAQUOKETA. THE PLANT WILL BE LOCATED INSIDE THREE BUILDINGS. DREW USES USED RESTAURANT OILS AND METHANOL TO MAKE THE BIODIESEL FUEL.

A CANDIDATES FORUM IS SCHEDULED FOR TONIGHT FOR THE 5 PEOPLE SEEKING THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL FIRST WARD SEAT. THE EVENT STARTS AT 7 P.M. AT CITY HALL. THE SPECIAL ELECTION FOR FIRST WARD RESIDENTS ONLY WILL BE ON DECEMBER 16TH.

MAQUOKETA POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING TWO INCIDENTS. PRECISION METAL WORKS ON EAST PLATT REPORTED THAT THEIR POP MACHINE WAS BROKEN INTO. AND THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BUSES WERE UNPLUGGED MONDAY NIGHT LATE.

SAGE ROSENFELS DID A GOOD JOB IN GETTING ANOTHER WIN FOR THE HOUSTON TEXANS LAST NIGHT.
