OLD AGE AND OLD MAN WINTER SATURDAY TOOK DOWN THE OLD CLINTON ENGINES CAFETERIA BUILDING ACROSS FROM WHERE THE PLANT WAS LOCATED.
BRENT AND SHEILA NUGENT HAVE A BIG AUTO REBUILDING BUSINESS TO THE
NORTH AND WILL HAUL AWAY THE RUBBISH AND PUT A NEW STORAGE BUILDING ON THE OLD CEMENT FLOOR. THIS IS LOOKING AT THE EAST SIDE OF BUILDING.
TO THE FAR RIGHT, STILL STANDING, A SMALL BRICK BUILDING THAT WAS HEADQUARTERS FOR THE CLINTON ENGINES CREDIT UNION. TRIVIA....WHO WAS
LONGTIME MANAGER OF THE UNION? I DON'T KNOW WHO OWNS THIS BUILDING NOW. BOB STOCKHAM, FAY MCKINSEY AND I OWNED IT FOR A FEW YEARS IN THE 70'S....THEN RE-SOLD IT AFTER STOCKHAM COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT WE COULD DO WITH IT. REMEMBER..CLICK-ON PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT.

THIS IS LOOKING AT THE CAFE BUILDING ON THE WEST SIDE OF IT. THIS BUILDING WAS STILL USED ABOUT A YEAR AGO BY BILL MAYBERR AND JOHN MELROY, RUNNING THEIR CLINTON ENGINES PARTS BUSINESS IN IT. NOT SURE WHERE THEY MOVED TO. I REMEMBER GOING TO MEETINGS AT NIGHT IN THE 60'S, WHEN THE THEN-NEW COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY FOR JACKSON COUNTY USED IT FOR THEIR BOARD MEETINGS.

MONDAY AND MORE.....MORE SNOW. FIVE TO EIGHT INCHES OF SNOW IN FORECAST FOR LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT. RAINING NOW, BUT TEMP WILL BE DROPPING AND SNOW WILL START.
CANCELLATIONS ARE STARTING TO COME IN TO KMAQ ALREADY...
AND SOME SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE DISMISSING EARLY....MAQUOKETA AT 1:30 THIS AFTERNOON.
SORRY ABOUT FEW DAILY REPORTS LATELY.
TWO BIG STORIES LAST WEEK. THE FIRST....I FELL ON ICE IN KMAQ GARAGE
WHILE LEIGHTON AND I WERE TRYING TO GET AN OVERHEAD DOOR TO OPEN. TWO SECONDS AND PAIN. SMALL FRACTURE ON OUTSIDE BONE CONNECTING TO ANKLE...PLUS A BRUISED ANKLE IN GENERAL. PROBABLY FELL RIGHT ON IT. NO SURGERY.....NO CAST.....A SPECIAL BOOT IS WHAT I HAVE TO WEAR AND IT COULD BE WEEKS FOR IT. AND NOW THE OLD SAYING.."COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE". ON TOP OF IT ALL.... IT HAPPENED LAST TUESDAY, THE DAY BEFORE WE WERE GOING ON SHORT VISIT TO FLORIDA. FOR ME, ANOTHER CHAPTER IN THE WINTER OF 07-08. SO, IF WE HAD MADE IT TO FLORIDA, THERE WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN A DAILY REPORT ANYWAY UNTIL TOMORROW.
THE OTHER STORY....LAST WENESDAY, A MAN AND TWO YOUNG CHILDREN WERE FOUND DEAD IN THEIR GARAGE ON A GRAVEL ROAD BETWEEN LAMOTTE AND
ST. DONATUS. THE MAN WAS DIVORCED AND HAD THE KIDS FOR THE WEEKEND.
WHEN HE DIDN'T GET THEM BACK IN TIME, HIS WIFE ASKED THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT TO DO A WELFARE CHECK AND THE BODIES WERE THEN DISCOVERED. ONE CHILD WAS 19 MONTHS OLD AND OTHER 3 YEARS OLD. AUTOPSY SAID DEATH WAS CAUSED BY CO2 FROM TRUCK RUNNING. THEY ARE NOT SAYING FOR SURE IF IT WAS MURDER-SUICIDE OR NOT. THE FATHER WAS A DIABETIC AND COULD HAVE PASSED OUT IN THE GARAGE, ESPECIALLY SINCE HE WAS SEEN DURING THE WEEKEND WITH THE KIDS AND ALL SEEMED FINE WITH HIM. THE STORY WAS COVERED EXTENSIVELY BY THE MEDIA.
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS, WE HAVE NO KMAQ AREA BASKETBALL TEAMS
GOING TO EITHER THE GIRL'S OR BOY'S STATE TOURNAMENT.
THE OLD CLINTON ENGINES CAFETERIA BUILDING, ACROSS FROM THE MAIN
OFFICE, WAS RECENTLY PURCHASED BY BRENT NUGENT, WHO HAS A BUSINESS
ADJACENT TO IT. HE WAS GOING TO TEAR IT DOWN AND USE THE LAND.
THAT JOB HAS STARTED. THE ROOFED CAVED IN OVER THE WEEKEND.
MAYBE ANOTHER VICTIM OF THE WINTER SNOW??
HAVE A GOOD WEEK.
AND CAREFUL WHEN WALKING ON THE ICE!!!

THE OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER IN MAQUOKETA IS OVER 3 YEARS OLD AND LAST NIGHT, HAD A MAJOR COUNTRY ARTIST PUT ON A CONCERT....SUZY BOGGUSS.
ADMISSION FOR THE 7 P.M. SHOW WAS $30 IN ADVANCE AND $35 AT THE DOOR.
THE AUDIENCE LOVED THE 1-HOUR, 40-MINUTE SHOW, WITH NO INTERMISSION.
SUZY AND HER 4-PIECE BAND DID ALL HER HITS AND NEW SONGS FROM HER NEWEST CD, JUST OUT. IT WAS A GOOD SHOW! I THINK ATTENDANCE WAS DISAPPOINTING...LESS THAN HALF A HOUSE. BUT, THERE WERE MAJOR SPONSORS, SO I SUPPOSE IT WAS A FINANCIAL SUCCESS. HOPE SO. LOTS OF NICE COMMENTS AFTER THE CONCERT.

NO SNOW TODAY. NO SNOW TODAY. SUNSHINE TODAY. HIGH IN TEENS.
IT WAS ANNOUNCED TODAY THAT MAQUOKETA HAS RECEIVED 57 INCHES OF SNOW IN NOVEMBER, DECEMBER AND JANUARY AFTER YESTERDAAY'S 4 1/2 INCHES.
NOT THE SNOWIEST EVER, BUT STILL WEEKS OF WINTER LEFT. THE RECORD IS IN THE 70-INCHES CATEGORY, BUT THIS WINTER WILL BE IN THE TOP FIVE "MOST-SNOW- EVER" WINTERS IN THE HISTORY OF MAQUOKETA. JACKSON COUNTY ENGINEER CLARK SCHLOZ AT THE SUPERVISOR'S MEETING THIS WEEK SAID THIS PAST WINTER WAS THE WORST HE'S SEEN. HE SAID DRIFTS WERE SO BAD IN JACKSON COUNTY, THAT COUNTY CREWS HAD TO USE END LOADERS TO REMOVE THE SNOW BECAUSE THE MOTOR GRADERS WOULDN'T PUSH THE SNOW.
BECAUSE OF THE WINTER SNOW, MAQUOKETA'S PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
IS CURRENTLY $35,000 OVER BUDGE AND MAY HIT $50,000 BY THE END OF WINTER.
PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR DAVE POPP TOLD THE CITY'S STREET COMMITTEE LAST NIGHT THAT THE INCREASE IF FROM OVERTIME, FUEL, EQUIPMENT REPAIRS, AND MATERIALS. HE SAID THE CITY SHOULD BE IN GOOD SHAPE FOR SALE AND SAND
FOR THE REST OF THE WINTER.'
AN ACCIDENT AT 7:40 YESTERDAY MORNING RESULTED IN CHARGES AGAINST JAMES HAYWARD, AGE 76, OF MAQUOKETA, WITH UNSAFE ENTRY. THE POLICE REPORT SAID TROY THEIDE, AGE 42, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON MAIN STREET AND HAYWARD PULLED OUT OF A PARKNG SPOT WHICH CAUSED THEDE TO HIT THE HAYWARD VEHICLE.
DR. PAUL KOOB WILL ANNOUNCE WRESTLING TONIGHT ON KMAQ "LIVE" FROM THE STATE TOURNAMENT IN DES MOINES. HE WILL BROADCAST THE MATCHES BY THE TWO CARDINALS OUT THERE AND THE THREE DEWITT SABERS, ALSO IN OUR CLASS.
HE GOES ON-THE-AIR AT 6:30. AND LEIGHTON HEPKER WILL BE AT THE GYM IN DEWITT GIVING UPDATES ON THE GIRL'S TOURNAMENT GAME BETWEEN MAQUOKETA AND DEWITT. BUSY SPORTS NIGHT TONIGHT ON KMAQ.
THE CARDINAL BOYS BEAT WESTERN DUBUQUE BY 8 POINTS LAST NIGHT AND THEIR FINAL GAME BEFORE TOURNAMENTS IS TOMORROW NIGHT AGAINST VINTON SHELLSBURG.
KAREN TILTON, OF THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA (HOME OF CLOSE TO 30 GOLF COURSES)
...FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA...HAD A HOLE-IN-ONE SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT THE SADDLEBROOK GOLF COURSE. HAD IT ON THE FIRST HOLE WITH A 3 WOOD.
THREE WITNESSES, BUT NOT DEAN. HE WAS AT A NASHVILLE MEETING. HER FIRST HOLE-IN-ONE. WHAT AN ATHLETE!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO ARTIST PAT COSTELLO OF MAQUOKETA.
WATCH FOR THE CHARLOTTE, IOWA SINGER ON AMERICAN IDOL TONIGHT.

THIS IS MARY LEE GREEN OF CLINTON STREET IN GRAND MOUND. SHE WON THE KMAQ 50TH ANNIVERSARY JANUARY RADIO. IT IS ON THE TABLE IN FRONT ON
HER. MARY IS 77 AND HAS LISTENED TO KMAQ SINCE THE 60'S. WHEN SHE SENT IN HER NAME FOR THE MONTHLY DRAWING, SHE WROTE THAT SHE ESPECIALLY LIKES THE DERRY BROWNFIELD SHOW AND THE DEWITT CALLING SHOW.
I TOOK THIS PHOTO IN STUDIO B, WHERE MANY OF OUR PROGRAMS ORIGINATE,
INCLUDING THE BINGO SHOW. SEE THE CAGE ON THE SHELF. THE BIG CONSOLE CONTROL BOARD ON THE SHELF WAS THE FIRST ONE WE USED HERE AT KMAQ, AND IT WAS IN SERVICE FOR MANY YEARS IN THE CONTROL ROOM. IT WAS MADE BY COLLINS RADIO, THEN IN CEDAR RAPIDS. THE FIRST TO USE IT WHEN KMAQ WENT ON THE AIR WAS BOB BROWN, OUR FIRST MANAGER, NOW LIVING IN FORT ATKINSON, WISCONSIN. NOTE THE BIG LETTERS AND NUMBERS ALONG THE TOP OF THE PHOTO. THE DATE KMAQ WENT ON THE AIR FOR THE FIRST OFFICIAL FULL DAY OF BROADCASTING. I HAD THE 9 TO 11 A.M. SHIFT AND THE 2 UNTIL 5 IN THE AFTENOON SHIFT THAT DAY. THE NUMBER ONE SONG IN THE NATION WAS VOLARE. AND IT WAS THAT DAY THAT EASTERN IOWA WAS INTRODUCED TO POLKAS. OUR FIRST POLKA SHOW WAS BROADCAST THAT DAY AT 11:30 AND THE SHOW HAS BEEN ON KMAQ-AM AT THAT TIME EVERY DAY SINCE, INCLUDING SUNDAYS. IT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR SHOWS ON KMAQ-AM. AND, OF COURSE, MANY PEOPLE DISLIKED THE POLKAS TOO AND TUNED OUT FOR THE HALF HOUR AND CAME BACK AT NOON FOR THE NOON NEWS AND MARKETS. THANKS MARY LEE GREEN FOR BEING A LONGTIME LISTENER TO KMAQ. HOPE YOU ENJOY THE NEW RADIO.
OUR NEXT FREE RADIO WILL BE DRAWN FOR ON MARCH 1ST.

IT IS SNOWING IN MAQUOKETA. WILL PROBABLY SNOW ALL NIGHT. 8-10 INCHES PREDICTED. THEN 2 TO 4 MORE INCHES TOMORROW BEFORE STOPPING TOMORROW AFTERNOON.
THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MET LAST NIGHT AND HEARD THAT IT WILL COST MORE THAN THE ORIGINAL ESTIMATE OF $10,000 TO REPAIR THE AERIAL TRUCK.
THE TRUCK IS NOW AT ALEXIS, ILLINOIS. THE NEW ESTIMATE IS $26,745 IF PARTS CAN BE FOUND FOR THE 1984 TRUCK. A NEW PUMP WILL COST $29,104 AND THE COUNCIL DECIDED THAT WAS THE WAY TO GO. A NEW TRUCK, BY THE WAY, WOULD
COST AROUND $3/4 MILLION. THE CITY BOUGHT THIS ONE USED IN 2003 FOR $185,000. SO...WHEN ALL IS CONSIDERED...THE BEST OPTION IS A NEW PUMP.
THE TRUCK WAS DAMAGED IN THE DOWNTOWN FIRE JANUARY 19TH. MAYOR TOM MESSERLI SAID THERE MAY ALSO BE SOME INSURANCE COVERAGE.'
SKYLER EUGENE SMITH, 3 WEEKS OLD, DIED SUDDENLY YESTERDAY. HE HAS MAQUOKETA SURVIORS AND THE COMPLETE OBITUARY IS AT www.carsonandson.com
I'M STARTING TO THINK DIFFERENT ABOUT THE FOUR SEASONS.
HAVE A GOOD WEDNESDAY.....ASH WEDNESDAY!
