SOIL TESTS FOR CONTAMINATION ARE STILL BEING CONDUCTED AND THEREFORE THE SUPERVIORS WILL NOT SELL THE PROPERTY. DEERY'S WOULD ALSO BE INTERESTED IN BUYING THE LAND AND BUILDING. BUT, THEY WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THE LAND IS GIVIN A CLEAN BILL FROM THE DNR.
ADDITIONS TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL IN MAQUOKETA WILL NOT BE FOR THE $1.5 MILLION COST HOPED FOR...BUT A LOT MORE. MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS LEARNED MONDAY NIGHT FROM THE DISTRICT'S CONSTRUCTION MANAGER, THAT THE COST FOR BOTH SCHOOLS IS NOW ESTIMATED AT $2.13 MILLION. DISTRICT SUPERINTENDANT KIM HUCKSTADT SAID HE WOULD WORK ON WAYS TO BE ABLE TO COME CLOSER TO THE ORIGINAL ESTIMATE. THE DISTRICT IS HOPING TO GET 60% GRANT MONEY FOR THE PROJECTS.
ANOTHER JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEE WILL BE RETIRING AT THE END OF THE YEAR.
SUPERVIORS APPROVED THE EARLY RETIREMENT OF ROBERT WINGER, AGE 62, AS JAILER. EARLIER, THEY APPROVED THE EARLY RETIREMENT OF DEPUTY ALLEN BARKER. WINGER HAS WORKED IN THE JAIL FOR 12 YEARS.
SHEEK FASHIONS, MAQUOKETA'S ONLY LADIES APPAREL STORE, IS GOING OUT OF BUSINESS. THE SALE STARTED
THIS PAST MONDAY. KELLY HESSONG STARTED THE STORE ABOUT 2 AND A HALF YEARS AGO. SHE IS A NICE PERSON AND IT WAS A NICE STORE. SORRY IT WILL BE CLOSING. I REMEMBER WHEN THERE WERE ABOUT 6 STORES IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA WHERE LADIES COULD BY CLOTHES.
END OF ANOTHER REPORT...TAKE IT EASY UNTIL THE NEXT ONE.

TODAY'S HIGH WAS 58...NOW AT 9:30 p.m. it is 40.
Mayor Tom Messerli was easily re-elected today, winning over Pam Rosenberg, l,004 to 266 votes.
This will be his second term. He runs a TV repair business in Maquoketa and Dubuque and also is KMAQ's Engineer and Saturday morning drive-time announcer on FM. He is also a fireman. Today is his 43rd birthday.
He is divorced, has a daughter in college and his longtime friend of 10 years is KMAQ's News Director Sheri Melvold. Mention marriage and its "why ruin a good thing?" Both have lovely homes in Maquoketa..one in the 2nd Ward and the other in the 4th Ward.
In the 1st Ward, Alvin Barten was un-opposed and re-elected with 145 votes. He has a Used Car business on East Platt Street.
In the 2nd Ward, Tim Clark was elected to a full 4-year term with 153 votes. He was un-opposed. He was finishing out the term of a councilman that moved to Alaska.
In the 3rd Ward, there was no candidate. Current councilman Jim Bollman did not seek re-election. Winning that seat by write-in, Marsha Myers, with 18 votes. She has been a Maquoketa resident for only a few years and I have no other information about her.
In the 5th Ward, to replace Steve Flynn who is moving out of the city limits and could not run for that reason, there was a race between businessman Paul Hahle and businessman and ex-Mayor Jack Rosenberg. Hahle won, 324 to 106.
For At-Large Council, current councilman Tim Chapin was defeated soundly by a former councilman, Neil Morehead, 874 to 365.
Carry-over Council members, are Tom Schueller and John Cressey.
And that's the way they counted up today.
Good night...or Good day, whenever you read this. THANKS TO THE 1,284 PEOPLE THAT VOTED TODAY.
I'M NOT SURE WHAT PERCENTAGE OF ELIGIBLE VOTERS THAT IS??

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY. IT RAINED ALL WEEKEND...OVER 2-INCHES AND RAINED ALL DAY TODAY AND WILL KEEP RAINING UNTIL ABOUT MIDNIGHT TUESDAY. THEN, NO RAIN IS IN THE FORECAST FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK, BUT IT WILL BE PRETTY COOL THE REST OF THE WEEK WITH DAILY TEMPERATURES STARTING WEDNESDAY ... IN THE MID 40'S. TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW ONLY, ALONG WITH THE RAIN, WE ARE LOOKING FOR A HIGH IN THE 60'S.
MAQUOKETA POLICE CHIEF BOB ANDERSEN WAS INJURED FRIDAY WHILE MAKING AN ARREST. TODAY, D.J. MCDONALD, AGE 38, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS CHARGED WITH INTERFERENCE WITH OFFICIAL ACTS. FOLLOWING THE SCUFFLE AT 700 VINE STREET, CHIEF ANDERSEN WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AND RECEIVED 20 STITCHES ABOVE HIS RIGHT EYE.
THE CHEIF DID WORK TODAY.
THE LATE LIGE "BLONDIE" RASMUSSEN WAS INDUCTED INTO THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY 2003 HALL OF FAME AT A CEREMONY YESTERDAY AFTERNOON JUST BEFORE THE SOCIETY'S ANNUAL HERITAGE FUND RAISER DINNER.
EACH YEAR, SOMONE IS HONORED WHO HAD CONTRIBUTED TO THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN THEIR COMMUNITY OR TO A PERSON WHO HAD RECEIVED SIGNIFICANT RECOGNITION AWAY FROM THE AREA DURING THEIR LIFE.
BLONDIE WAS A DANISH IMMIGRANT WHO LOST HIS PARENTS AT AGE 9, ENDED SCHOOL AFTER 8TH GRADE, AND BEGAN AS A FARMER NEAR DELMAR, THEN OWNED AND OPERATED A RESTAURANT IN DELMAR AND IN 1916 GOT INTO THE AUTOMOBILE BUSINESS IN DELMAR. LATER, HE STARTED A DEALERSHIP, RASMUSSEN MOTORS, IN MAQUOKETA
IN 1924 AND IT REMAINED UNTIL 1985 WHEN IT WAS PURCHASED BY BRAD DEERY. FOR MANY YEARS, THE DEALERSHIP SOLD ALL 5 GM CARS, ONE OF A FEW IN THE COUNTRY TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THE ENTIRE GM LINEUP. SON JERRY RASMUSSEN HAS RETIRED AND LIVES IN MAQUOKETA AND HE AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS WERE ON HAND YESTERDAY FOR THE INDUCTION CEREMONY. I WENT TO THE DINNER ,BY THE WAY, AND THE FOOD WAS VERY GOOD AND THEY HAD A GOOD TURNOUT....SOMEWHERE OVER 600 PEOPLE. AND THAT IS A BIG DINNER FOR MAQUOKETA.
CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT.
