CLOUDY AND COLD TODAY...HIGH OF 21.
A LITTLE WARMER TOMORROW.
TOMORROW NIGHT AND FRIDAY, MAYBE AN INCH OF SNOW.
OTHERWISE, NOW THRU NEW YEAR'S DAY.....TEMPERATURES IN THE
20'S AND NO BAD WEATHER.
DAC, INC. NOW RENTS THE FORMER ANDREW CARE FACILITY AND
ONE OF IT'S CLIENTS, 40-YEAR OLD JOSEPH WALLACE OF BELLEVUE, LAST FRIDAY NIGH, WAS ANGRY ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO SMOKE AND TRASHED HIS ROOM, CAUSING AROUND $1,000 WORTH OF DAMAGE. HE WAS JAILED AFTER THE INCIDENT.
A FIRE CHRISTMAS EVE NEAR NASHVILLE, (WEST OF MAQUOKETA) HAS LEFT A MOTHER, LESLIE SCHMELTZER AND HER 2 DAUGHTERS HOMELESS.
JUST THE SHELL OF THE HOUSE IS STANDING. LOST NATION AND
MAQUOKETA FIREMEN WERE AT THE SCENE FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS.
THERE WAS NO ONE HOME WHEN ONE DAUGHTER CAME HOME AROUND
MIDNIGHT AND FOUND SMOKE BILLOWING FROM THE HOME.
A MONEY DRIVE HAS BEEN STARTED AND DONATIONS CAN BE LEFT AT THE OHNWARD BANK IN BALDWIN. SCHMELTZER TWO DAUGHTERS ARE
LIVING WITH FRIENDS.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

THE STORM IS OVER! WINTER STARTED THIS MORNING! IT WAS SLIPPERY THIS MORNING AND NO SCHOOL AGAIN TODAY. THE SUN HAS BEEN OUT ALL DAY, SOME OF THE 7-INCHES OF SNOW IS MELTING, AND NOW, WE WILL HAVE CONTINUED COLD WEATHER RIGHT THROUGH CHRISTMAS.
JACKSON COUNTY ENGINEER CLARK SCHLOZ TOLD KMAQ NEWS THAT
SECONDARY ROAD EMPLOYEES WILL BE WORKING TOMORROW IN AN EFFORT TO CLEAR SNOW FROM THE RURAL ROADS. UNFORTUNATELY
THE COUNTY WILL BE WITHOUT THE SERVICES OF ONE OF THEIR SNOW PLOWS. JUST AFTER 10:30 THIS MORNING A FREIGHTLINER SNOW PLOW
TRUCK, OPERATED BY TERRY RUBEL OF MAQUOKETAA, TIPPED ONTO IT'S
SIDE WHILE PUSHING SNOW FROM THE SHOULDER OF 33RD STREET, OR WEST SUMMITT STREET IN THE AREA OF MAQUOKETA LIVESTOCK SALES.
RUBEL GOT TOO CLOSE TO THE SOFT SHOULDER, TIPPING THE TRUCK
ONTO THE PASSENGER SIDE. HE WAS NOT HURT.
THE MAQUOKETA YMCA HEATER FOR THE POOL NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.
ESTIMATED COST, BETWEEN 16 AND 33-THOUSAND DOLLARS, DEPENDING
ON IF THEY GET A HIGH EFFICIENCY UNIT OR NOT. THE WATER IS 78 DEGREES WHICH IS OK FOR LAP SWIMMING BUT CHILLY FOR SWIM
LESSONS. THE PRESENT ONE IS LESS THAN 5 YEARS OLD AND THE PROBLEM MAY BE BECAUSE OF A DESIGN FLAW.
MAURICE "BUBBLE" CONNOLLY, AGE 90, OF BERNARD, DIED WEDNESDAY
AT SHADY REST CARE IN DUBUQUE. HE WAS A LIFELONG FARMER.
SURVIVORS INCLUDE HIS WIFE, AND 3 CHILDREN, INCLUDING JUDI
CONNOLLY-TRENKAMP OF MAQUOKETA.
KMAQ STATION MANAGER LEIGHTON HEPKER HAS BEEN APPOINTED TO FILL A VACANCY ON THE HOSPITAL BOARD. HE WAS THE ONLY APPLICANT
FOR THE POSITION THAT CAME ABOUT WHEN BOARD MEMBER GLORIA JORGENSEN RESIGNED HER SEAT TO FILL A FULL 6 YEAR TERM VACANCY ON THE BOARD. JORGENSEN'S SEAT WOULD HAVE EXPIRED IN 4 YEARS.
HEPKER WILL START JANUARY 1 AND HE WILL SERVE UNTIL DECEMBER OF 2016. HEPKER SERVED AS MAYOR FOR 5 YEARS IN THE 80'S AND WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE AS A MEMBER OF THE MAQUOKETA AIRPORT
COMMISSION.
HAVE A NICE WEEKEND!

SO COLD.! SO WINDY!
AND IT ALL COMES TO AN END BY TOMORROW MORNING, AND JUST BEFORE WINTER OFFICIALLY BEGINS.
WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A WHITE CHRISTMAS!
TOMORROW, SUNNY AND HIGH OF 19. TOMORROW NIGHT A LOW OF 4.
AND SO MUCH FOR THE WEATHER!
THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MET IN A SPEICIAL CLOSED-DOOR MEETING
(FOR MOST PART) AND THEN ANNOUNCED AFTER THAT THE CITY VOTED
4 TO 2 (THEDE ABSENT) TO PURCHASE THE DECKER HOTEL AND RESTAURANT SO IT WILL NOT BE SOLD BY A DUBUQUE CREDIT UNION AND
TURNED INTO LOW INCOME APARTMENTS.
THE CITY WILL TRY NOW TO SELL IT TO SOMEONE THAT WILL CONTINUE TO
OPERATE IT AS A HOTEL AND RESTAURANT.
THANKS TO OUR MAYOR, THE 1876 HISTORIC BUILDING WILL CONTINUE TO
BE A MAJOR FEATURE OF DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA.
IT WOULD COST MILLIONS TO BUILD ONE LIKE IT. I BELIEVE WITH GOOD MANAGEMENT AND NEW IDEAS, IT WILL SOME DAY AGAIN BE A PROFITABLE
BUSINESS.
THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL CLUB HOPE HOSTED A MINI-DANCE MARATHON LAST SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND RAISED
$9,711. THE MONEY GOES TO THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA CHILDREN'S MIRACLE NETWORK. GREAT JOB CLUB HOPE!
SPORTS .. THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM WON THEIR FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON AT DEWITT TUESDAY NIGHT, IN OT,
39 TO 31. THE BOYS LOST LATER THAT NIGHT ON THE SAME SABER GYM, 47 TO 44.
BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER, THE JUDGING OF THE KMAQ CHRISTMAS
LIGHTING CONTEST HAS BEEN DELAYED. WE HOPE TO HAVE THE JUDGING COMPLETED AND WINNERS ANNOUNCED BY THE END OF THE WEEK,.
HAPPY SNOW TRAILS TO YOU!

THE VOY 3 THEATRE SCREENS WERE DARK. THE THEATRE CLOSED FOR THE SPEICIAL EVENT.
IT WAS THE ANNUAL KMAQ-VOY THEATRE CHRISTMAS PARTY.
THERE WERE 5 TABLES AND WE WERE THE LAST TO BE SEATED!
MOST ENJOYED A LITTLE CHRISTMAS CHEER BEFORE DINNER AND THEN WE ENJOYED A CHICKEN, HAM AND SHRIMP BUFFET WITH ALL THE
TRIMMINGS. AND OH THE FOOD WAS GOOD.
IT WAS 36 DEGREES WITH A MIST WHEN WE ALL DROVE THE 15 MINUTE TRIP TO THE GREAT LITTLE JACKSON COUNTY TOWN. ON THE WAY HOME,
32 DEGREES AND SNOWING....BUT WE ALL MADE IT FINE.
FROM THE HOMETOWN RESTAURANT, BACK TO THE TIMBER CITY AND TO
NANCY'S HOUSE, FOR.....GRASSHOPPERS.....CAKE AND ICE CREAM.
A LITTLE FRIENDLY CHATTER....GIFT OPENING....AND 9:15 THE PARTY
WAS OVER!
AND EVERYONE THEN WENT HOME AND SETTLED DOWN FOR A LONG WINTER'S NIGHT.
WELL...IT REALLY WASN'T WINTER (BEGINS AT 5:12 TOMOROW MORNING)....
BUT THE NIGHT WAS A WINTER ONE ALRIGHT!
WE AT KMAQ AND THE THEATRE ALL LIKE CHRISTMAS...AND CHRISTMAS PARTIES!

CLOUDY, COLD DAY TODAY. STILL PREDICTING SNOW TOMORROW
NIGHT AND THURSDAY MORNING....5,6,7 OR MORE INCHES.
JUST FINISHED LISTENING TO THE "FIBBER McGEE AND MOLLIE SHOW" ON
KMAQ.....WE AGAIN THIS YEAR ARE AIRING AN OLD TIME RADIO CHRISTMAS
SHOW AT 3:05 EVERY AFTERNOON.
BIG DOUBLE-HEADER BASKETBALL GAMES TONIGHT ON KMAQ .... THE CARDINALS AT DEWITT. GIRLS GAME AT 6 AND BOYS GAME AT 7:30.....BOTH ON KMAQ-FM TONIGHT AND ON OUR INTERNET SITE. MATT CLARK AT
THE PLAY-BY-PLAY MIKE.
LAST NIGHT, THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL TALKED ABOUT THE DECKER HOTEL AT THEIR MEETING. THE COUNCIL THIS WEEK WILL CONSIDER BUYING THE HOTEL AND RESTAURANT FROM A DUBUQUE CREDIT UNION.
MAYOR DON SCHWENKER HAS CALLED FOR A CLOSED SESSION AT
6:30 TOMORROW NIGHT AT CITY HALL TO DISCUSS THE MATTER.
A CLOSED SESSION IN DEALING WITH REAL ESTATE IS ALLOWED BY
LAW. THE MAYOR PROPOSED THE CITY PURCHASE THE HOTEL WHICH IS ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES FROM DUPACO CREDIT UNION. HE SAID DUPACO HAS SOMEONE INTERESTED IN BUYING THE HOTEL AND TURNING IT INTO LOW-INCOME APARTMENTS. THE MAYOR SAID WITH THE PUSH TO RENOVATE DOWNTOWN, HE DIDN'T WANT TO SEE THE PROPERTY TURNED INTO APARTMENTS. HE SUGGESTED THE CITY BUY IT AND LOOK FOR A BUYER. THE CREDIT UNION TOLD CITY OFFICIALS
THEY WOULD GIVE THE CITY 4 OR 5 DAYS TO PURCHASE IT
OR FIND A BUYER. THE MAYOR CALLED IT A LANDMARK, A CROWN JEWEL AND A TOURIST ATTRACTION. I AGREE! AND I'VE HEARD IT CAN BE
PURCHASED AT A BARGAIN PRICE. IT HAS 18 ROOMS WHICH NOT THAT LONG AGO WERE ALL GUTTED AND MADE LIKE NEW. THERE IS AN APARTMENT ON THE SECOND FLOOR. THE RESTAURANT IS MODERN, THE LOBBY IS NICE AND THERE IS A BAR IN THE BASEMENT. THE ELEVATOR
NEEDS WORK. SO.....ANYONE OUT THERE WANTING TO COME BACK TO
MAQUOKETA AND GET INTO BUSINESS....HERE'S YOUR CHANCE. EMAIL
ME AND I'LL GET YOU IN CONTACT WITH SOMEONE WITH MORE INFORMATION. THE CURRENT OWNER IS MIKE MILEN OF PLATTEVILLE,
WISCONSIN AND HE HAS INDICATED TO THE MAYOR THAT HE WILL HAVE TO GIVE THE PROPERTY BACK TO THE CREDIT UNION. MEANWHILE, THE DECKER REMAINS OPEN AS USUAL AND IT WILL BE OPEN THROUGH THE HOLIDAY TO HAVE SCHEDULED PARTIES, ETC.
IN A RELATED BUSINESS MATTER, LAST NIGHT COUNCILMAN TROY THEDE
(WHO SOLD THE DECKER TO MILEN) SAID THE HOTEL "THE COMFORT INN"
AT MAQUOKETA (HE IS OWNER OR PART OWNER) WILL JOIN ANOTHER
FRANCHISE AT THE END OF DECEMBER. IT WILL BECOME A "CORNERSTONE INN"....A NEW FRANCHISE THAT WILL BE LESS COSTLY TO BE AFFILIATED WITH.
ONE OF THE CHILDREN KILLED IN THE NEWTOWN SHOOTING HAD TIES
TO JACKSON COUNTY. AVIELLE RICHMAN, AGE 6, IS THE DAUGHTER OF
JENNIFER HENSEL WHO GREW UP IN SABULA AND GRADUATED FROM EAST
CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL IN MILES. MRS. HENSEL'S PARENTS STILL LIVE

MAQUOKETA ONCE HAD TWO MOVIE THEATRES. THE "PASTIME" WAS A LARGE 600 SEAT THEATRE THAT STOOD WHERE THE NEW "SMILES ON MAIN"
DENTAL OFFICE BUILDING IS LOCATED. IT SHOWED A FINAL MOVIE ON THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 31, 1973. I OWNED IT FOR 3 MONTHS, PRIOR TO
OPENING THE VOY THEATRE IN MARCH OF 1973. THE VOY 3 WILL BE 40 YEARS OLD IN MARCH.
THE OTHER THEATRE WAS THE "CHIEF" AND WAS LOCATED JUST NORTH OF THE VOY 3 THEATRE. THE FRONT OF THAT BUILDING IS NOW FOR RENT BY
ME AND THE REAR OF IT IS WHERE THE VOY 3 AUDITORIUM IS LOCATED.
BACK IN THE EARLY 50'S, THE "CHIEF" WAS IN OPERATION ONLY A FEW YEARS.
AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR, WE SELL A LOT OF GIFT CARDS FOR THE VOY 3.
KENNY WIDEL OF MAQUOKETA YESTERDAY BROUGHT IN A COUPON BOOK
HE FOUND, CALLED "BOOK OF HAPPINESS" THAT WAS SOLD AT CHRISTMAS TIME IN THE EARLY 50'S. IT SOLD FOR $2.50 AND INCLUDED BOTH 10-CENT
AND 5-CENT COUPONS. A NICE BOOK! NO GIFT "CARDS" IN THOSE DAYS FOR THE "PASTIME" OR THE "CHIEF".
ONE BOOK PROBABLY WAS ENOUGH TO GO TO A MOVIE THOSE DAYS AND
HAVE COUPONS LEFT OVER FOR POP, POPCORN AND CANDY.
THIS CHRISTMAS, WE (VOY 3) ARE HAPPY TO BE ABLE TO PLAY THE NEW HIT MOVIE "LINCOLN" RATED PG-13. IN FACT, IT STARTS THIS FRIDAY. AN EXCELLENT MOVIE THAT WILL BE GETTING A LOT OF AWARDS IN THE NEXT COUPLE MONTHS.
CLICK ON THE COUPON BOOK AND COUPONS ABOVE TO MAKE READING EASIER.
SEE YOU AT THE MOVIES!
THE BIG THEATRE SCREEN IS THE BEST PLACE TO ENJOY MOVIE!

I'M BACK! WE WERE IN FLORIDA TO HELP DEAN AND KAREN TILTON CELEBRATE THEIR 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY AT THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA. THEY CELEBRATED A LITTLE EARLY....THE ACTUAL DATE IS JUST
BEFORE OR JUST AFTER CHRISTMAS....I'M NOT SURE WHICH. HAD A NICE
TIME. ABOUT 10 FROM MAQUOKETA WERE THERE. WE FLEW INTO
ORLANDO AND RENTED A CAR AND BEFORE COMING HOME, SPENT SOME
TIME AT DISNEYWORLD AND UNIVERSAL STUDIOS...A FIRST FOR ME.
I TOOK THE PHOTO ABOVE. THEY LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD AND ENJOY
FLORIDA AND WILL CELERATE MORE ON A CRUISE WITH THE TWO BOYS AND
SIX GRANDKIDS. WE TALKED A LITTLE ABOUT THE GOOD OLE' KFC DAYS
IN MAQUOKETA WHEN DEAN AND I OWNED THE KFC RESTAURANT HERE FOR 20 YEARS, STARTING IN 1980. WE STILL LIKE "FINGER LICKIN' GOOD CHICKEN! ORLANDO IS SOMETHING ELSE...WAS THANKFUL FOR MY GPS.
WEATHER WAS GREAT DOWN THERE...WARMER THAN USUAL FOR THIS
TIME OF YEAR.
WAS GOOD TRIP. . BUT GOOD TO GET BACK HOME!
FRIDAY NIGHT HERE IN MAQUOKETA, THE CARDINAL BOYS WERE DOWN BY 10 POINTS LATE IN THE GAME, AND WON IN THE FINAL COUPLE MINUTES BY 2 POINTS, OVER DYERSVILLE BECKMAN. SORRY I MISSED THE GAME.
FRIDAY, I RANG THE SALVATION ARMY BELL FOR AN HOUR AT FAREWAY.
HAD NOT DONE THAT IN A LONG TIME. MANY OF YOU KNOW THAT THE
FIRST SALVATION ARMY CITADEL WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER WAS HERE
IN MAQUOKETA, COMPLETE WITH A STAFF AND BAND. THE BUILDING WAS MOVED TO HORSESHOE POND PARK AND IS BEING USED TODAY.
MORE ABOUT THE SALVATION ARMY KETTLE. AN ANONYMOUS DONOR ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7TH, DROPPED A GOLD COIN WORTH MORE THAN $1,500 IN THE LITTTLE RED KETTLE AT WAL-MART HERE IN MAQUOKETA. IT WAS WRAPPED IN A DOLLAR BILL WITH THE USE OF SCOTCH TAPE.
THERE WAS LOTS OF FUN WITH THE 12-12-12 DAY. HERE, BOB HEAD
CELEBRATED HIS BIRTHDAY THAT DAY...I THINK 74, MAYBE 75.
THE KMAQ 2ND ANNUAL CHRISTMAS HOME DECORATING CONTEST HAS ENDED AND WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED LATER THIS WEEK. THIS YEAR, ONLY 13 ENTRIES. ALL 13 HOMES WILL BE UP ON THE KMAQ HOME PAGE
TOMORROW....TAKE A LOOK THEN. JUST CLICK-ON THE DECORATION BUTTON. EVERYONE WILL GET A PRIZE. THE $65 ENTRY FEE MONEY KMAQ WILL BE PUT IN THE SALVATION ARMY CHRISTMAS KETTLE.
THE FREE CHRISTMAS DINNER THIS CHRISTMAS DAY WILL FROM 11:30 A.M. UNTIL 1 P.M. AT THE EAGLES CLUB AOND SPONSORED BY THE EAGLES AND THE EAST IRON HILL CHURCH.
THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL NEW YEAR'S EVE SHOW AGAIN THIS DECEMBER 31ST AT THE OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER, AT 7 P.M. A TRIBUTE TO THE LEGENDS FEATURING DENNY AND THE DC DRIFTERS, ABOVE.

CLOVER RIDGE ASSISTED LIVING in Maquoketa held the Grand Opening of their new addition this afternoon on Ehlers Lane up on the hill off West Platt Street. Top photo shows the very large new family room, overlooking the city of Maquoketa. Under it is another large storm-shelter and large-screen TV room. There is an elevator to get down to this basement room.
Second photo is from hallway looking into an apartment. The living room is straight
ahead...kitchen to right...and bedroom and bath around the corner.
There are 8 new one-bedroom apartments.
Above, is Nate Gjerstad, Manager of Clover Ridge, and another look at the large

It is a beautiful new addition! If you didn't get a chance to see it this afternoon, stop up and someone will be glad to give you a tour.

THE RECORD FOR TODAY WAS 65 IN 1982. WE STARTED THE DAY
WITH HEAVY FOG, HAD A MOSTLY CLOUDY DAY AND TIED THE RECORD.
TOMORROW, SUNNY AND 55 AND THE REST OF THE WEEK IN THE 40'S.
A CLINTON MAN FACES SIX CHARGES, INCLUDING BITING JACKSON
COUNTY DEPUTY SHERIFF BRANSON BECK IN THE LOWER RIGHT
LEG. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AT AROUND 8 P.M. LAST NIGHT
AT 1519 HIGHWAY 67 NEAR SABULA, WHEN BECK AND SABULA POLICE CHIEF JOSH KILBURG TRIED TO ARREST THE 26-YEAR OLD CLINTON MAN ON A COUPLE COUNTS OF BURGLARY IN THE SECOND DEGREE. BECK
USED A TASER ON THE MAN AND MADE THE ARREST.
IN LOCAL SPORTS NEWS THE PAST WEEK, THE MAQUOKETA GIRL'S BASKETBALL TEAM IS OFF TO A BAD START, LOOSING THEIR FIRST 4 GAMES.
THE BOYS BEAT MARION IN THEIR INITIAL GAME OF THE SEASON, BY ONE
POINT AND THE WRESTLERS WERE IN THE CASCADE TOURNAMENT
SATURDAY AND WON 5 AND LOST NONE.
CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT.
THE KMAQ TRAVEL XMAS BRANSON TRIP LAST WEEK WENT WELL....GOOD SHOWS, GOOD FOOD AND GOOD WEATHER. AND NO "DAILY REPORTS".
BRANSON WAS BUSY AND STILL CLEANING UP AFTER THE SUMMER
TORNADO. BUT, I NOTICED 3 THEATRES FOR SALE AND A BIG OUTLET
MALL HAS CLOSED. THERE TOO, BUSINESS COULD BE BETTER.
WE ATTENDED THE BROOKE BYAM COUNTRY CONCERT SATURDAY NIGHT
AT THE OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER. A VERY GOOD SHOW BY
BROOK AND FRIEND DUSTIN WEISE, BOTH NOW NASHVILLE ENTERTAINERS. NICE SINGING ALSO BY BROOKE'S GRANDPA, RED HENTON OF MAQUOKETA (AGE 93) AND HER MOTHER JUDY FROM CLINTON. GOOD TURNOUT....AROUND 500.
THEY GAVE THE SHOW A "STANDING OVATION" AT THE END. THE EVENT
WAS SPONSORED BY THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN
MAQUOKETA AND FINANCE COMMITTEE MEMBER BARB MAYBERRY SAID
THEY WILL PUT THE PROFITS TO GOOD USE IN THE CHURCH.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK.
