LAST NIGHT, THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL TALKED ABOUT THE DECKER HOTEL AT THEIR MEETING. THE COUNCIL THIS WEEK WILL CONSIDER BUYING THE HOTEL AND RESTAURANT FROM A DUBUQUE CREDIT UNION.
MAYOR DON SCHWENKER HAS CALLED FOR A CLOSED SESSION AT
6:30 TOMORROW NIGHT AT CITY HALL TO DISCUSS THE MATTER.
A CLOSED SESSION IN DEALING WITH REAL ESTATE IS ALLOWED BY
LAW. THE MAYOR PROPOSED THE CITY PURCHASE THE HOTEL WHICH IS ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES FROM DUPACO CREDIT UNION. HE SAID DUPACO HAS SOMEONE INTERESTED IN BUYING THE HOTEL AND TURNING IT INTO LOW-INCOME APARTMENTS. THE MAYOR SAID WITH THE PUSH TO RENOVATE DOWNTOWN, HE DIDN'T WANT TO SEE THE PROPERTY TURNED INTO APARTMENTS. HE SUGGESTED THE CITY BUY IT AND LOOK FOR A BUYER. THE CREDIT UNION TOLD CITY OFFICIALS
THEY WOULD GIVE THE CITY 4 OR 5 DAYS TO PURCHASE IT
OR FIND A BUYER. THE MAYOR CALLED IT A LANDMARK, A CROWN JEWEL AND A TOURIST ATTRACTION. I AGREE! AND I'VE HEARD IT CAN BE
PURCHASED AT A BARGAIN PRICE. IT HAS 18 ROOMS WHICH NOT THAT LONG AGO WERE ALL GUTTED AND MADE LIKE NEW. THERE IS AN APARTMENT ON THE SECOND FLOOR. THE RESTAURANT IS MODERN, THE LOBBY IS NICE AND THERE IS A BAR IN THE BASEMENT. THE ELEVATOR
NEEDS WORK. SO.....ANYONE OUT THERE WANTING TO COME BACK TO
MAQUOKETA AND GET INTO BUSINESS....HERE'S YOUR CHANCE. EMAIL
ME AND I'LL GET YOU IN CONTACT WITH SOMEONE WITH MORE INFORMATION. THE CURRENT OWNER IS MIKE MILEN OF PLATTEVILLE,
WISCONSIN AND HE HAS INDICATED TO THE MAYOR THAT HE WILL HAVE TO GIVE THE PROPERTY BACK TO THE CREDIT UNION. MEANWHILE, THE DECKER REMAINS OPEN AS USUAL AND IT WILL BE OPEN THROUGH THE HOLIDAY TO HAVE SCHEDULED PARTIES, ETC.
IN A RELATED BUSINESS MATTER, LAST NIGHT COUNCILMAN TROY THEDE
(WHO SOLD THE DECKER TO MILEN) SAID THE HOTEL "THE COMFORT INN"
AT MAQUOKETA (HE IS OWNER OR PART OWNER) WILL JOIN ANOTHER
FRANCHISE AT THE END OF DECEMBER. IT WILL BECOME A "CORNERSTONE INN"....A NEW FRANCHISE THAT WILL BE LESS COSTLY TO BE AFFILIATED WITH.
