89 TODAY....
HAD A BRIEF SHOWER EARLY THIS MORNING IN MAQUOKETA.
90 DEGREE WEATHER THRU SATURDAY AND IN THE 80'S SUNDAY.
I VISITED THE FARMER'S MARKET AT 4 THIS AFTERNOON...JUST AS IT
OPENED WITH 26 EXHIBITORS AND MANY SHOPPERS. THE PARKING LOT
WAS FULL AT OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER. THE "LIVE" MUSIC WAS
JUST STARTING AND "CLUB HOPE" OPENED ITS FOOD STAND.'
MANY HAVE WORKED TO MAKE THE MAQUOKETA FARMER'S MARKET
ONE OF THE BEST AROUND....OPEN EVERY TUESDAY FROM 4-7.
THIS YEAR'S "NATIONAL NIGHT OUT" IN DEWITT WILL BE A WEEK
FROM TONIGHT AT THE DOWNTOWN PARK.....6 TO 8 P.M.
I'M PRETTY SURE MAQUOKETA WILL HAVE ONE TOO.
ON THE POLICE BLOTTER....
C & R TIRES ON EAST PLATT STREET REPORTED THAT SOMEONE TOOK CHANGE FROM THEIR BUSINESS OVER THE WEEKEND.
RYAN KLOFF TOLD POLICE HE WAS MISSING MULTIPLE ITEMS FROM HIS
VEHICLE.
AND
TIMBER LANES REPORTED YESTERDAY THE THEFT OF QUARTERS FROM THE BUSINESS ON EAST PLATT STREET.
KMAQ HAS AN OPENING FOR A SALES REP...FULL TIME! GO TO THE KMAQ
MAIN PAGE AND CLICK FOR THE APPLICATION FORM OR CALL KMAQ OR STOP IN FOR ONE. KMAQ IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER.
WE HAVE AN OPENING BECAUSE DOTTIE BAYLES IS RETIRING AFTER
35 YEARS ON THE SALES STAFF. DOTTIE WAS WORKING AT THE HOSPITAL
WHEN I HIRED HER IN 1977. HER LAST DAY OF WORK WILL BE SEPTEMBER 7TH AND KMAQ WILL NEVER QUITE BE THE SAME AFTER. WE WILL MISS HER, AS WILL HER MANY CLIENTS IN MAQUOKETA AND SURRONDING CITIES.
DOTTIE....JOB WELL DONE! A GOOD LONG RETIREMENT EARNED!

SOME FINAL PHOTOS FROM THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR, WHICH ENDED
LAST NIGHT WITH THE "NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION". TOP PHOTO SHOWS
THAT THE GRANDSTAND WAS PACKED LAST NIGHT. YESTERDAY'S ATTENDANCE WAS 6,866. THAT BEAT THE PREVIOUS SUNDAY RECORD OF 6,083. THE FIVE DAY ATTENDANCE WAS 21,574, CLOSE TO THE RECORD OF 22,759 IN 2009.
ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YESTERDAY WAS THE "HUG A HOG" CONTEST.
THE FIRST WOMAN ABOVE THAT CAUGHT THE HOG AND PUT IT IN THE
BARRELL, WAS THE WINNER. A MUDDY SPORT!
THE FIRST ANNUAL KARAOKE CONTEST WAS HELD LAST NIGHT. KMAQ'S ASHLEY STARR (ABOVE PHOTO) ENTERED AND DID VERY WELL. THE
WINNER WAS DANIELLE CLARK OF MAQUOKETA. CHARLES JENKENS TOOK
SECOND PLACE AND ELIZABETH McCLIMON TOOK THIRD. BOTH ALSO
FROM MAQUOKETA.
THE 61 DRIVE-IN FLOAT WAS, I THOUGHT, A WINNER. BUT THE JUDGES DID NOT. THANKS TO GRANDDAUGHTER SARA FROM BETTENDORF FOR PUTTING IT TOGETHER. THAT'S GRANDSON JACOB FROM BETTENDORF ON FLOAT. WE HAD ANOTHER GOOD WEEKEND AT THE 61, BUT EARLY THIS
MORNING, OUR SECOND BREAK-IN OF THE SEASON.
THE PARADE WAS 70 MINUTES LONG, ON A 100-DEGREE DAY, AND IN THE LEAD WAS THE VFW (VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS) COLOR GUARD, ABOVE.
THE SATURDAY NIGHT CONCERT, FEATURING "38 SPECIAL" WAS WELL
ATTENDED...OVER 300 STANDING AROUND THE STAGE. I DID NOT SEE IT
BUT WAS TOLD IT WAS A GOOD SHOW. IN FACT, SON DAVID SAID IT WAS THE
BEST JACKSON COUNTY FAIR GRANDSTAND SHOW HE HAS EVER SEEN.
A VERY GOOD FAIR, 2012! GOOD JOB LANNY AND YOUR BOARD!
AS I SEE IT, THE ONLY MAJOR IMPROVEMENT NEEDED, IS A STRONGER PROGRAM FOR FRIDAY AFTERNOONS. THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN VERY
SLOW....HARDLY NO INTEREST IN THE HORSE PULL AND VERY FEW SENIOR
CITIZENS.....AND IT IS SENIOR CITIZEN DAY.
LEIGHTON AND I COVERED 5 FAIRS IN JULY....KEPT US BUSY. WE ARE ALWAYS GLAD WHEN THEY ARE OVER.
YES..KMAQ IS SPONSORING A BUS TRIP TO THE STATE FAIR AUGUST 15TH.
I'LL BE THE ESCORT. SIGN-UP BY CALLING, EMAILING OR STOPPING IN HERE ON NORTH MAIN STREET.

THE MAQUOKETA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALL OUT
AT 5:47 THIS MORNING TO A GRASS FIRE AT 6766 CAVES ROAD.
KATHY BOLLINGER REPORTED THE FIRE HAD BEEN SMOLDERING
SINCE SUNDAY, BUT WAS GETTING NEAR AN ABANDONED TRAILER.
FIREFIGHTERS SPENT ABOUT 30 MINUTES AT THE SCENE.
JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF CHIEF DEPUTY ED CLARK SAID CHARGES
ARE PENDING AND AN INVESTIGATION HAS STARTED ON THE BURNING.
THERE IS STILL A BAN ON BURNING IN JACKSON COUNTY.

THE SOCIETY DECIDED TO BUILD A NEW ONE. THEY ARE IN THE PROCESS OF RAISING $300,000 TO DO THIS.
THE PLAN IS TO ERECT A NEW MACHINE SHED AT THE MAPLE STREET
LOCATION, WHERE THE CLINTON ENGINES MUSEUM IS LOCATED.
AND THEY ALSO PLAN TO IMPROVE THE EXISTING SHED ON THE FAIR
GROUNDS.

2/10 OF AN INCH OF RAIN LAST NIGHT AND SO TODAY IT IS LESS HUMID AND
COOLER....BUT WE ARE STILL IN THE MID TO UPPER 80'S TODAY.
SOME PLACES GOT LESS RAIN THEN WE AND OTHERS, LIKE EAST OF TOWN, GOT OVER AN INCH.
THE MAQUOKETA BOYS GAME STOPPED IN THE 5TH INNING LAST NIGHT
WHEN THE RAIN CAME AND MAQUOKETA TRAILED 4 TO 3. THERE THEN
WAS MORE THAN A 2-HOUR DELAY, MOSTLY BECAUSE OF LIGHTNING.
THE GAME STARTED UP AROUND 10:30 AND MAQUOKETA TIED THE
GAME. IN THE BOTTOM OF THE EXTRA 8TH INNING, (HIGH SCHOOL GAMES ARE 7 INNINGS) WESTERN DUBUQUE LOADED THE BASES AND THEN A HIT
DROVE IN THE WINNING ROOM. WESTERN DUBUQUE NOW GOES TO
THE STATE TOURNAMENT NEXT WEEK. A HEARTBREAKER LOSS FOR THE CARDINALS. BUT....A GREAT YEAR!!
NO LOCAL NEWS TODAY.
I'M TAKING OFF TO DO BROADCASTING LATER TODAY FROM THE CLINTON
COUNTY FAIR IN DEWITT.
LEIGHTON IS DOING "LIVE" BROADCASTS FROM THE JONES COUNTY FAIR
AT MONTICELLO.
JEFF REVIER STOPPED IN....VISITING FAMILY AND FRIENDS....SAYS HE
CONTINUES TO ENJOY THIS DAILY REPORT.
HE'S RETIRED AND PLAYING LOTS OF GOLF.
TWO CORRECTIONS ON THIS REPORT...THE NEW ECO TOURISM CENTER IS
A LITTLE SOUTH, NOT NORTH, OF CAMANCHE. I WENT BACK TODAY AND CHANGED IT ON THE STORY. VISIT THE PARK WHERE THE CENTER IS LOCATED SOON.....NICE PLACE.
AND..
AT THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR NEXT WEEK....THE SENIORS SPECIAL RATE
OF $7 WILL ONLY BE ON SENIOR CITIZENS DAY, NEXT FRIDAY.
