BELOW, A FEW OF ABOUT 175 PHOTOS I TOOK LAST WEEK ON TRIP TO AUSTRIA AND
GERMANY....CLICK-ON THEM TO ENLARGE THEM.
A COUPLE WERE POSTED HERE TWICE....GOING TO FAST DOING THIS.
I HAD SEVERAL REQUESTS TO PUT UP A FEW OF MY PHOTOS, SO ENJOY.
A FEW BELOW WERE TAKEN IN SALZBURG, HOME OF MOZART. ALSO THE
CITY WHERE "SOUND OF MUSIC" WAS FILMED.
LOTS OF MOUNTAINS EVERYWHERE WE WENT...AND SKI SLOPES. SEPTEMBER
IS OFF-SEASON MONTH....THE CITIES REALLY GET BUSY WHEN THE SNOW
ARRIVES AND WITH IT,THE SKIERS.
WE HAD SNOW ONE DAY, UNEXPECTED, AND A PHOTO TAKEN OUTSIDE OUR HOTEL WINDOW
SHOWS IT SNOWING. SO, WE GOT TO SEE SOME SNOW-COVERED MOUNTAINS
AS A BONUS.
ONE AFTERNOON WAS SPENT AT OCTOBERFEST IN MUNICH. NEARLY A MILLION VISITORS A DAY. A FUN PLACE. THE COLORFUL PHOTOS OF PEOPLE IN PAVILIONS ARE BELOW. THERE ARE ABOUT 6 OR 7 FOOTBALL-FIELD-SIZE COLORFUL BUILDINGS, USED BY COMPETING BEER COMPANIES, ALL TRYING TO OUT-DO EACH OTHER AT OCTOBEFEST.
AND BEER WAS BROUGHT TO EACH BY A COLORFUL BEER WAGON PULLED BY A 3-TEAM HITCH.
ALSO IN SALZBURG WE VISITED THE MIRABELI FLOWER GARDENS...PHOTO BELOW.
A WIENERSNITZEL DINNER WAS ENJOYED ONE NIGHT BY OUR GROUP OF 43...MY PLATE PHOTOGRAPHED BEFORE I ATE EVERY BIT. THIS ONE WAS VEAL...THIN AND CRISPY...AND VERY GOOD.
WE SAW SEVERAL McDONALD'S...AND BURGER KINGS...A COUPLE PIZZA HUTS AND
ONE OR TWO SUBWAYS. NO STORAGE RENTALS, LIKE THE MILLIONS WE HAVE.
WE SPENT A DAY IN INSSBRUCK AND THE BAVARIAN ALPS, AND CLIMBED HUNDREDS OF STEPS TO VIEW THE FAMOUS NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE, THE INSPIRATION CASTLE FOR DISNEY'S SLEEPING BEAUTY CASTLE.
WEARING SPECIAL COVERALLS, WE WENT WITH A SMALL TRAIN DEEP INTO A MOUNTAIN
TO SEE A SALT MINE. NOW I KNOW ALL ABOUT THE TERRIBLE SALT WE USE ON
ALL OUR FOOD.
WE WENT UP THE ALPS ON A SPECIAL STEAM COG TRAIN AND STOPPED OFF AT A
BIG MOUNTAIN LAKE FOR A BOAT RIDE AND GREAT SCENERY.
GALENA IS A POPULAR SHOPPING AREA HERE, AS YOU KNOW. ON OUR TRIP, WE WENT
TO OVER 25 GALENA-LIKE GIFT-SHOP CITIES, ALL LARGER THAN GALENA....AND EACH HAD NUMEROUS BUSY SIDEWALK CAFES. VISITED A SMALL DAIRY FARM TOO.
SOME FARMERS LIVE UPSTAIRS IN THE BARN. MOST TAKE THEIR CATTLE UP
IN THE MOUNTAINS IN THE SUMMER FOR GRAZING. HAD BEEF TWICE...AND
IT WAS NO WAY CLOSE IN TASTE TO IOWA CORN FEED BEEF.
THEIR BEER AND CHEESE VERY GOOD THOUGH.
OH WELL....I COULD GO ON AND ON, BUT WILL END THIS. GREAT PLACE TO VISIT! A DIFFERENT WORLD! FUN TRIP! BUT AT THE END...GOOD TO
GET BACK HOME. ESPECIALLY AFTER A 9-HOUR TIGHT-SQUEEZE FLIGHT HOME,
FROM MUNICH TO O'HARE.
BY THE WAY, THE FIRST, TOP PHOTO IS WHERE MOZART LIVED FOR AWHILE.
AND THIS NOTE ALSO...ON SOME COMPUTERS,YOU MAY NOT SEE ALL THE PHOTOS
WITHOUT 'CLICKING' ON THE BUTTON FOR "MORE OLDER PHOTOS". ON MY COMPUTER,
THERE ARE THEN 5 REMAINING PHOTOS TAKEN ON THE TRIP. THE LAST PHOTO
YOU'LL SEE OF THE TRIP IS OF NANCY STANDING IN FRONT OF A McDONALDS

GREETINGS FROM GARMISH---IN SOUTHERN GERMANY!

I HAD PLANNED MORE DAILY REPORTS BUT WORKING IT IN IS NOT EASY USING A HOTEL COMPUTER.
AND---TRIED PUTTING UP PHOTO AND IT DIDN'T WORK!

HAD SOME SNOW YESTERDAY---A BIG SURPRISE TO US AND THE NATIVES----BUT WAS PRETTY TO SEE THE SNOW ON THE MOUNTAINS. IT NORMALLY DOES NOT SNOW UNTIL NOVEMBER:

THE SCENERY AND MOUNTAINS----BEAUTIFUL!!! YESTERDAY WE WENT UP THE ALPS ON A SPECIAL
STEAM TRAIN AND HAD A DINNER CRUISE ON A MOUNTAIN LAKE. EARLIER IN THE MORNING---WE WERE TAKEN DEEP INTO THE MOUNTAIN TO TOUR A SALT FACTORY.

TODAY WE WENT UP TO MUNICH FOR THE ANNUAL OCTOBERFEST.....WOW. THE IOWA STATE FAIR HAS A TOTAL
ATTENDANCE OF NEARLY ONE MILLION.
HERE----THE FIRST DAY OF OCTOBERFEST THE ATTENDANCE WAS ONE POINT TWO MILLION FOR THE OPENING DAY ALONE.
IT IS SPONSORED BY SIX OR SEVEN BEER COMPANIES AND EACH HAVE THEIR OWN PAVILION----AND EACH OF THE BUILDINGS IS WAY LARGER THAN A FOOTBALL FIELD AND I ESTIMATE THAT THEY CAN FEED TWO OR THREE
THOUSAND AT A TIME. EACH BEER COMPANY HAULS THEIR BEER TO THE PAVILION WITH A HORSE HITCH
PULLING A FANCY BEER WAGON. EACH WAGON IS DIFFERENT. AND THEY EACH SERVE A DIFFERENT FOOD! ONE HAS BEEF AND ANOTHER PORK AND ANOTHER FISH AND SO ON. AND ON A HIGH STAGE EACH BEER COMPANY HAS A LARGE BAND PLAYING POLKA MUSIC (MAINLY) FOR ALL TO ENJOY WHILE DINING.
AND OF COURSE THERE IS HUNDREDS OF FOOD STANDS ON THE GROUNDS AND A HUGE CARNIVAL WITH DIFFERENT
RIDES THAN WE HAVE IN AMERICA. NANCY AND I TOOK A RIDE ON A FAST REVOLVING SWING THAT WENT A COUPLE HUNDRED FEET IN THE AIR-----AND YES----I ENJOYED SOME GERMAN BEER (GOOD) AND NANCY HAD THEIR FAMOUS APPLE STRUEDEL.

WELL---SO MUCH FOR THE TRIP FOR NOW----JUST TWO DAYS LEFT AND MORE TO SEE.
WILL FLY HOME FRIDAY AND I WILL BE BACK AT THE KMAQ-AM MIC AT 5 THIRTY SATURDAY MORNING!

AND----ONE MORE THING! NANCY AND I LISTENED TO SHERI MELVOLD DOING THE NOON NEWS TODAY---
LISTENING (STREAMING) KMAQ-FM ON THE INTERNET----LIVE AND DIRECT! WE ARE 7 HOURS AHEAD OF
MAQUOKETA!

I SAID IT LAST TIME AND WILL END AGAIN BY SAYING----HAVING A GOOD TIME--WISH YOU WERE HERE!

THANKS FOR THE VISIT----WILL BE BACK HERE SATURDAY MORNING WITH THE MAQUOKETA FOOTBALL

3 MORE PHOTOS TAKEN IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA. HOPEFULLY, THESE TREES AND
ALL THE OTHERS CAN BE REPLACED SOMETIME SOON. THE ONES THAT LOOK OKAY, ARE TOO BIG FOR THE DOWNTOWN AREA. AND SINCE SEVERAL SPACES NO LONGER HAVE A TREE AT ALL, THE PRESENT TREES ARE NO LONGER EVENLY SPACED. THE PLANTERS DOWNTOWN ARE REALLY NICE, AND COURTESY OF THE MASTER GARDENERS. ALSO
NOTICE THAT AT THE BASE OF THE TREES...A FEW WEEDS TOO. BUT, IT HAS BEEN
ONE OF THOSE SUMMERS FOR MORE WEEDS THAN NORMAL, RIGHT? I BELIEVE
THAT NEW TREES AND NEW LOW ENERGY STREET LIGHTS (ON SHORTER POLES)WILL BE
A START FOR A BETTER DOWNTOWN. MAYBE THE CITY AND CHAMBER (WITH SOME

MORE GOOD WEATHER IN THE FORECAST.'

THE MAQUOKETA HIGH CLASS OF 1973 HAS DONATED MONEY TO PURCHASE THE NEW FLAG
POLE AT GOODENOW FIELD. A DEDICATION AND FLAG-RAISING CEREMONY BY
CLASS MEMBERS WILL BE HELD DURING THE HOMECOMING GAME ON FRIDAY NIGHT,
SEPTEMBER 23, AT 7 P.M. ALL MEMBERS OF THE CLASS ARE URGED TO ATTEND
AND SPREAD THE WORD TO OTHER CLASS MEMBERS.

THE MAQUOKETA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT ANSWERED A CALL AT 10 LAST NIGHT
TO THE TRUCK STOP AT THE SOUTH EDGE OF MAQUOKETA, WHERE SOMEONE PUMPED GASOLENE AND SPILLED ABOUT 25 GALLONS. THERE WAS NO FIRE.

A BIG ISSUE THESE DAYS IS "ELECTRICITY" FOR MAQUOKETA. THE COST OF
IT IS HIGH COMPARED TO MOST OTHER IOWA CITIES. THE NEW MANAGER OF MMEU, MIKE NICKESON, AFTER LOTS OF DELIBERATION, THINKS MAQUOKETA SHOULD CLOSE THE
GENERATION PART OF MMEU AND HAS ALREADY FIRED THREE OF THE PLANT EMPLOYEES.
ONE OF THE QUESTIONS CONCERNS WHO OWNS IT AND WHO HAS AUTHORITY TO
CLOSE IT DOWN AND OR SELL IT. THE COUNCIL IS SPLIT ON WHAT TO DO.
A LONG DISCUSSION WAS HELD AT THE COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT. AS A RESULT,
ANOTHER STUDY WILL BE DONE. AND THERE WAS TALK ABOUT A PETITION
CALLING FOR A VOTE IN THE NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION ASKING THAT THE MANAGEMENT OF THE PLANT BE CHANGED FROM A SEPARATE BOARD, AS WE NOW HAVE, TO TURNING MANAGEMENT BACK TO THE CITY COUNCIL. THE COUNCIL RAN THE PLANT UNTIL THE MID-80'S WHEN A PUBLIC VOTE CREATED THE MMEU BOARD. THE
COUNCIL SINCE THEN HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE ONLY FOR APPOINTING MEMBERS TO THAT
BOARD. NICKESON IS WORKING ON WAYS TO CUT EXPENSES AND THEREBY EITHER
LOWER RATES, OR AT LEASE NOT SEE THEM GO HIGHER. THE WISCONSIN COMPANY
WHERE THEY BUY WHOLESALE POWER WILL BE RAISING THEIR WHOLESALE RATE 2% A YEAR FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS, STARTING IN 2012. ONE OF THE BIG MISTAKES
MADE (MY OPINION) IS THAT MMEU SIGNED A 30-YEAR CONTRACT WITH THE
WISCONSIN WHOLESALER. YES, 30 YEARS! AND THERE IS NO WAY TO GET "OUT"
OF THE CONTRACT. ANOTHER ISSUE, IF THE PLANT IS CLOSED DOWN, THE CITY WILL NEED TO BUY SMALLER GENERATORS FOR EMERGENCY USE AT THE
WATER PLANT, AND THE SEWAGE PLANT AND AT ONE OR BOTH CITY WELLS.
IT IS ESTIMATED THEY WOULD COST OVER A MILLION DOLLARS. THE CITY WOULD
PROBABLY HAVE TO RAISE WATER AND SEWER RATES TO PAY FOR THOSE.
THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM! A LOT MORE FRIENDLY AND UNFRIENDLY DISCUSSION
IS STILL AHEAD! THERE ARE MANY CITIZENS WHO WANT IT KEEP THE PLANT
AS IT IS AND CONTINUE TO RUN IT. AND THEY ALSO WANT LOWER ELECTRIC
RATES. I'M NOT SURE WHAT I WOULD DO. BUT I CERTAINLY WOULD NOT LIKE
TO SEE THE CITY COUNCIL TAKE OVER MMEU AGAIN. THEY HAVE PLENTY OF
UNFINISHED ISSUES NOW!

WONDER WHAT BEN JACOBSEN WOULD DO IF HE WERE STILL LIVING? HE WAS THE "DEAN" OF MAQUOKETA POWER PLANTS!

AND OF COURSE...BEN FRANKLIN WAS THE ONE WHO STARTED ALL THIS!

SOME STILL SAY...WHEN FRUSTATED...GO FLY A KITE.
