IT'S CLOUDY AND COLD AGAIN TODAY!
FROST EXPECTED OVERNIGHT TONIGHT.
BUT....TOMORROW IS STILL SUPPOSED TO BE NICE...SUNNY AND MID 60'S.
THE MAQUOKETA GOLF TEAM HOSTED 6 OTHER TEAMS AT THE COUNTRY CLUB
COURSE YESTERDAY AND TOOK FIRST PLACE. TY THEDE HAD A 74 TO LEAD
THE CARDINALS.
THE LOCAL HOSPITAL WILL NO LONGER TRY RECRUITING A SURGEON AND
INSTEAD WILL NEGOTIATE WITH A QUAD CITIES GROUP TO PROVIDE SURGICAL
SERVICES HERE IN MAQUOKETA. LOCAL SURGEON DR. PETE ATIENZA WOULD LIKE TO RETIRE, BUT IS STILL WORKING AND WILL UNTIL THEY COME UP WITH OTHER
SURGICAL ALTERNATIVES. HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR CURT COLEMAN SAID
THERE IS A QUAD CITY GROUP INTERESTED IN SERVING MAQUOKETA A COUPLE DAYS A WEEK, WITH THREE SURGEONS ROTATING COVERAGE. A DECISION BY THE BOARD IS EXPECTED NEXT MONTH.
THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD THIS WEEK PURCHASED A NEW SCHOOL BUS
FOR $79,389 FROM A FIRM IN MARSHALLTOWN. AND THEY SOLD TWO OF THEIR
BUSES TO BRIDGEPORT AUTO IN MAQUOKETA FOR $1,500 EACH. THE MARSHALLTOWN DEALER WAS ONLY GOING TO GIVE $300 FOR A TRADE-IN.
THE SCHOOL BOARD THIS WEEK ALSO SPENT $37,000 FOR NEW CARPET AT
BRIGGS AND CARDINAL AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS.
SHELBY WIRTH, A SENIOR AT MCHS, WILL GRADUATE THIS MAY FROM HIGH
SCHOOL AND WILL BE ENTERING COLLEGE THIS FALL WITH ENOUGH CREDITS
TO QUALIFY AS A JUNIOR. THIS IS THANKS TO A PARTNERSHIP WITH CLINTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH MAKES IT
POSSIBLE FOR STUDENTS TO EARN COLLEGE CREDITS WHILE STILL IN HIGH
SCHOOL. AND SHE GOT THE COLLEGE CREDITS AT NO EXPENSE TO HER.
SHE WILL BE ATTENDING THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA THIS FALL.
JULIE KINRADE, HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELOR, WORKS WITH THE
STUDENTS WANTING EARLY COLLEGE CREDITS. AROUND 75% OF THE SENIOR CLASS THIS YEAR EARNED SOME COLLEGE CREDITS IN THE NEW CCC BUILDING
NEXT TO THE HIGH SCHOOL AND THEY AVERAGED ABOUT 25 CREDIT EACH,
EQUIVALENT TO ABOUT ONE YEAR OF COLLEGE. BUT AGAIN, FOR SHELBY,
DAUGHTER OF SCOTT AND MARY KAY WIRTH OF MAQUOKETA, HER CREDITS
WERE GOOD FOR TWO YEARS OF COLLEGE.
WHO IS GOING TO BE FIRST DAILY REPORT READER TO BUY A DUCK FROM ME FOR THE ROTARY DUCK RACE JUNE 21ST? THIS YEAR, ONE YELLOW DUCK IS $3....2 FOR $5 OR 5 FOR $10.
THE FIRST PLACE DUCK IN THE RACE AT THE YMCA POOL WINS $500 FOR IT'S
OWNER AND DUCK OWNERS WHOSE DUCK FINISHES 2ND THOUGH 10TH, EACH
GET $100. QUACK ...MEANS SEND CHECK....QUACK QUACK....TO BOX 940 AND
QUACK QUACK QUACK.....IT TO MAQUOKETA, 52060.
THIS WEEKEND HERE IN MAQUOKETA...... IS VINTAGE CAR WEEKEND.
LOTS OF GREAT CARS WILL BE IN TOWN, INCLUDING THOSE 57 CHEVROLETS.
I GRADUATED IN 57....SO OF COURSE, IT IS MY FAVORITE. THANKS TO THE
STATLER BROTHERS, WE CAN SING ABOUT IT TOO.

TO A SLEEP DISORDER LAB.
THE HOSPITAL HAS BEEN UNABLE TO RECRUIT A BABY DOCTOR.

MORE PROGRESS IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA!! THIS BUILDING IS ON THE CORNER ON EAST PLATT AND OLIVE STREETS , AND WITH THE ONE ON THE LEFT, HOUSED TERM CITY FURNITURE. THEY MOVED OUT. BOTH BUILDINGS ARE NOW EMPTY.
YEARS AGO, THE CORNER BUILDING WAS HARRIS PENROSE COMPANY. THEN IT BECAME TANDEM TIRE. A NEW BRICK FRONT WAS PUT ON BOTH BUILDINGS A FEW WEEKS AGO. WHAT A NICE IMPROVEMENT.
IF YOU CLICK-ON THE PHOTO, IT WILL BE LARGER AND YOU CAN THEN
READ THE FOR RENT SIGN. HELP GET THIS BUILDING RENTED! GO BELOW
TO SEE THE OTHER BUILDING TO THE LEFT. THEY HAVE AN OPEN WALL BETWEEN THE TWO TO MAKE IT ONE BIG STORE FRONT LOCATION.

TWO BUILDINGS WERE GIVEN NEW BRICK FRONTS. THIS IS THE BUILDING TO THE LEFT. PARKING LOT AND ALLEY AT LEFT OF BUILDING.
THE FURNITURE STORE TOOK UP BOTH BUILDINGS, BUT I THINK THERE COULD
BE A BUSINESS IN EITHER OF THE TWO, IF BOTH WOULD BE TOO BIG FOR
A BUSINESS.
WE NEED A FURNITURE STORE (NON LEFT IN JACKSON COUNTY)....SO I WOULD
LIKE TO SEE A NEW FURNITURE STORE GO BACK INTO THE SIDE-BY-SIDE
BUILDINGS, NOW WITH NEW BRICK FRONT.
DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA NEEDS MORE ACTIVITY AND THIS PROJECT JUST
COMPLETED WILL HOPEFULLY GET RENTED AND HELP MATTERS.

THIS PHOTO TAKEN IN THE BACK ROOM, SMALLER, AND WHERE THE FORKLIFT MOVES THE BIG BOXES OF ITEMS READY TO PUT ON SHELVES FOR SALE.
I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE STORE. BIGGER THAN I THOUGHT! WAY MORE MERCHANDISE THAN I THOUGHT THERE WOULD BE! A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF CLOTHING. A MAN'S SPORT COAT FOR $4.50 AS AN EXAMPLE. LOTS OF TOYS. SOME FURNITURE AND SMALL APPLIANCES. KNICK KNACKS AND GIFT
IDEAS FOR ALL AGES. SHOES. AND SOME SHELVES WITH BRAND NEW MERCHANDISE
TOO. GOODWILL IS OVER 50 YEARS OLD AND THIS STORE WILL BE A REAL
BENEFIT FOR MAQUOKETA AND WILL BRING MORE PEOPLE TO THE CITY TO
SHOP. THEY WILL SHOP AT GOODWILL AND WILL STOP AT OTHER BUSINESS PLACES TOO, AT GAS STATIONS, RESTAURANTS, GROCERY STORES, ETC. MAQUOKETA'S MAIN STREET NEEDED A BOOST AND THIS STORE IS GIVING IT.
A GOOD DAY FOR MAQUOKETA!
HOPE YOU LIKED SEEING THE PHOTOS. NOW, VISIT THE STORE IN PERSON.
AND OF COURSE DON'T FORGET ALSO TO VISIT OUR TWO OTHER USED CLOTHING
STORES DOWNTOWN, ONE IN THE MIDDLE BLOCK AND OTHER OTHER ON
NORTH MAIN STREET.
