NICE DAY TODAY...75 FOR HIGH. REST OF THE WEEKEND SHOULD BE PRETTY GOOD TOO.

THE CLASS OF 2009 AT MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL WILL GRADUATE
IN THE NEW HIGH SCHOOL SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT 2 P.M. SHOULD BE LOTS OF ROOM AS THE GYM SEATS AROUND 1,600. LAST YEAR, IN THE OHNWARD CENTER, THE
SEATING CAPACITY WAS LESS THAN 900. THE GYM HAS AIR-CONDITIONING.'
THE CLASS OF 2009 HAS 121 STUDENTS. DEB CARSON, ONE OF THE CEREMONY COORDINATORS, AID THE GRADUATES WILL GATHER AND LINE-UP IN THE
NEARBY OLD GYM. THEY WILL DIVED INTO TWO LINES AS THEY ENTER THE NEW
GYM FROM THE MEZZAINE LEVEL. FROM THERE, THEY WILL WALK DOWN THE TWO STAIRCASES ON THE WEST END OF THE NEW GYM AND SIT ON SEATS ON THE GYM FLOOR. THE COMMENCEMENT ACTIVITIES WILL TAKE PLACE ON A STAGE LOCATED ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE GYM. SENIORS JENI SCHURBON AND ALEXANDRA SIMPSON WILL SPEAK DURING THE CEREMONY. CARSON SAID
THE CLASS MEMBERS WILL WEAR SPECIAL RIBBONS IN MEMORY OF DEREK
ARENSDORF AND TEACHER WILLIAM COOEY, BOTH OF WHOM DIED DURING THE
2008-09 SCHOOL YEARS.

GOV. CHET CULVER TODAY ANNOUNCED THE NAMES OF 53 SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN IOWA RECEIVING STATE FUNDS UNDER THE STATEWIDE VOLUNTARY PRESCHOOL PROGRAM FOR 4-YEAR OLD CHILDREN. AN ESTIMATED 3,247 ADDITIONAL CHILDREN IN THE STATE WILL NOW HAVE CHANCE FOR A QUALITY PRESCHOOL EXPERIENCE DURING THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR. MAQUOKETA IS ONE OF THE DISTRICTS TO RECEIVE A GRANT. HELEN SNELL, CURRICULUM DIRECTOR FOR THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOLS SAID THE DISTRICT IS VERY PLEASED TO RECEIVE THE GRANT. SNELL SAID
FAMILIES WILL NOW BE ABLE TO CHOOSE WHERE THEY SEND THEIR CHILDREN.

SHE IS A MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE AND WENT TO FURTHER HER EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS, IN CHICAGO, WHERE SHE RECEIVED HER FAMILY NURSE PRACTIONER DEGREE.

ASHLEY AND JONATHAN WILHELM OF MAQUOKETA ARE PARENTS OF A GIRL BORN MAY 19TH AT MERCY IN CLINTON.

ORDINANCE TO ALLOW A BIODIESEL PLANT TO EXPAND IN RURAL MAQUOKETA.

POLICE BLOTTER: JESSICA TRACY REPORTED HER MOTOROLA RAZER CELL PHONE WAS STOLEN FROM THE MAQUOKETA MIDDLE SCHOOL GYM.
CASEY'S REPORTED A GAS DRIVE-OFF....$12 NOT PAID.
MARSHA MYERS, CITY COUNCILWOMAN, REPORTED SOMEONE HIT HER MOTOR HOME WHILE IT WAS PARKED AT 603 E. MAPLE STREET.

CITY COUNCIL HAVING A SHORT SPECIAL MEETING THIS AFTERNOON.

JOHNIE KAY KOPPES OF MAQUOKETA IS MOTHER OF A BOY BORN MAY 21ST AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL. MATERNAL GRANDPARENTS ARE LAURA AND GREG HAYWARD OF MAQUOKETA.

FOR JACKSON COUNTY OFFICIALS. THEY ARE IN ONE-HALF OF THE GENERAC
BUILDING IN THE NEW SOUTH INDUSTRIAL PARK. THEY HAVE A 10-YEAR LEASE
FOR THEIR HALF AND THE OTHER HALF IS A WAREHOUSE STILL USED BY

HUSCO IN MAQUOKETA NOW HAS 27 EMPLOYEES. THE HAVE 11 MORE JOBS TO BE FILLED SOON. THE COMPANY EXPECTS 50 EMPLOYEES BY THIS FALL AND 80 BY NEXT SPRING, AND 125 BY JANUARY OF 2011. INITIALLY, WHEN THEY ANNOUNCED THEIR COMING TO MAQUOKETA, THEY PROJECTED 250 JOBS BUT THE OFF-HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION MARKET HAS SEEN A STEEP DECLINE AND BECAUSE OF THE ECONOMIC SLOW DOWN, THEY WILL NOT GET UP TO 250 AS SOON AS EXPECTED.

AT THE FAREWAY STORE. HE TRANSFERRED HERE FROM STORM LAKE AND HAS BEEN WITH FAREWAY FOR 15 YEARS. HE REPLACES JEFF COOK WHO TOOK A POSITION
IN THE BUYING DEPARTMENT AT THE FAREWAY CORPORATE OFFICE. MIKE KOLL
CONTINUES ON AS GROCERY MANAGER.

ON THE POLICE BLOTTER: BOB HAMILTON REPORTED HIS CAR BROKEN INTO
WHILE AT THE TRUCK STOP AND PRESCRIPTION PILLS WERE TAKEN.
AND CASEYS ON EAST PLATT REPORTED THAT 91 TELEGRAPH HERALDS AND 14 DES MOINES REGISTERS WERE MISSING SUNDAY. AN UNUSUAL THEFT.

CENTER AT 1 P.M. FOR A TREAT AS WELL. I DON'T KNOW MIKE, BUT I'VE KNOWN
ROBERT AND BONNIE FOR MANY YEARS. THEY LIVE IN ONE OF THE MANY BRAD DEERY APARTMENTS ON MUGGSIE LANE. ROBERT IS A RETIRED MINISTER,
TEACHER AND BARBER. BONNIE WORKED FOR MANY YEARS FOR JC PENNEY AND
NOW FILLS IN WHEN NEEDED AT THE CHAMBER OFFICE. AND FOR YEARS, ROBERT HAS KEPT WEATHER PRECIPITATION RECORDS, FIRST FOR KCRG-TV AND NOW

ANOTHER MEMBER OF THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL DISTRICT ADMINISTRATIVE
TEAM WILL BE LEAVING THE DISTRICT. BRIAN MORETZ, AN ASSISTANT
PRINCIPAL AT THE HIGH SCHOOL HAS ACCEPTED A POSITION OF PRINCIPAL IN GRADES 7 THROUGH 12 AT MONTEZUMA SCHOOL DISTRICT. HE HAS BEEN IN MAQUOKETA FOR 4 YEARS. HE IS THE 2ND PRINCIPAL TO LEAVE. MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL AUTUMN PINO IS GOING TO PLEASANT VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT.

THERE WILL BE TWO POSITIONS OPEN THIS FALL FOR THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL
BOARD. TERMS OF MARTY HUDLIK AND BRIAN TABOR WILL BE UP.
JULY 6TH IS FINAL DAY TO FILE. NOMINATION PAPERS CAN BE PICKED UP
AT THE COUNTY AUDITOR'S OFFICE.

THE MAQUOKETA OPTIMIST CLUB HELD THEIR RESPECT FOR THE LAW BANQUET LAST NIGHT. MARY ANN KUNDE, LONGTIME POLICE DISPATCHER (21 YEARS)
HAS RETIRED AND THE CLUB GAVE HER A PLAQUE. LONGTIME OPTIMIST, PAUL HARTELL, RECEIVED A PLAQUE FOR HIS HELP IN ORGANIZING THE MAQUOKETA POLICE RESERVES. ABOUT 70 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE BANQUET AT THE EAGLES CLUB IN MAQUOKETA AND ST. REP. TOM SCHUELLER WAS THE GUEST SPEAKER.
HE TALKED ABOUT NEW LAW ENFORCEMENT LAWS.
AND, MIKENZIE TAYLOR, DAUGHTER OF TIM AND TRACYH TAYLOR OF MAQUOKETA, IS THE RECIPIENT OF THIS YEAR'S $1,000 MAQUOKETA OPTIMIST CLUB SCHOLARSHIP. AND TWOLOCAL STUDENTS WON THE CLUB'S ORATORICAL CONTEST....ASHLEY BECKER, A 7TH GRADER , WON $75 FOR FIRST PLACE AND
MORGAN VERVECK, 7TH GRADER, GOT SECOND PLACE AND $50.

JESSICA AND LONNIE HOWEL OF BERNARDD ARE PARENTS OF A BOY BORN SUNDAY MORNING AT THE MAQUOKETA HOSPITAL. MATERNAL GRANDPARENTS ARE
SHIRLEY RISDEN AND CHARLES RISDEN, BOTH OF MAQUOKETA. PATERNAL
GRANDPARENTS ARE RONALD HOWELL, SR. AND SHARON HOWEL OF MAQUOKETA.

MICHAEL BERTHEL, AGE 45, OF DUBUQUE, DIED AFTER AN ACCIDENT ON THE JULIAN DUBUQUE BRIDGE. HE AT ONE TIME WORKED AT HAPPY JOE'S PIZZA IN MAQUOKETA. HIS IS SURVIVED BY 5 CHILDREN.

YESTERDAY, SUNNY AND 82...AND TODAY, ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE 80'S.
BREEZY THOUGH, BOTH DAYS.

MAQUOKETA POLICE LOOKING FOR A HIT AND RUN DRIVER. POLICE CHIEF
BRAD KORANDA SAID BRADEN KNIGHT, AGE 12, WAS AT MAIN AND PLATT
AROUND 3:30 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AND HIS LEFT FOOT WAS RUN OVER BY A WHITE CAR AND THE CAR CONTINUED EAST AFTER HITTING THE BOY.
BRADEN WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AND WAS TREATED AND RELEASED WITH
MINOR INJURIES. KNIGHT IS THE SON OF SARA KNIGHT AND JOSH KNIGHT, BOTH OF MAQUOKETA.

ROTARY. SOMETIME TOMORROW, I WILL HAVE A PHOTO OF THE HONORED
SENIORS.

5 PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO THE LOCAL HOSPITAL AROUND 4 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AFTER A 2 VEHICLE ACCIDENT. IN ONE CAR, FOUR FROM DUBUQUE AND THE OTHER CAR WAS DRIVEN BY JANNA KAUFMAN, 59, OF MAQUOKETA. SHE
WAS ALONE. ALL FIVE WERE SAID TO HAVE POSSIBLE OR MINOR INJURIES.
KAUFMAN WAS CHARGED WITH FAILURE TO YIELD ON A THROUGH HIGHWAY.

THERE ARE STRICT STIPULATIONS ON SPENDING THE MONEY.
SO MANY, THAT IT LOOKS NOW LIKE IT STILL WILL BE MONTHS BEFORE
THE CLEAN-UP WORK CAN BE DONE.

TROY THEDE, OWNER, SAID THE DECKER HOTEL HAD A BUSY MOTHER'S DAY
WITH WELL OVER 300 COMING FOR BREAKFAST BUFFET. HIS MOTHER,
WITH HER RV AND 2 OR 3 DOGS, IS BACK IN TOWN FOR AWHILE. SHE'S IN HER MID 80'S AND KEEPS ON-THE-GO. LIKES TO STOP AT A CASINO NOW AND THEN. TROY WAS THE YOUNGEST OF 12 KIDS. A BROTHER TOM ALSO LIVES IN MAQUOKETA AND WITH WIFE, OWNS AND OPERATES THE SWEET THINGS BAKERY.

MAQUOKETA FIREMEN WERE CALLED TO SMELL OF ANHYDROUS AT 12:30
SUNDAY MORNING TO EBERHART FARM SERVICE. THERE WAS A LEAK
THERE AND FIREMEN WERE AT THE SCENE FOR NEARLY AND HOUR WHILE PROBLEM WAS TAKEN CARE OF.

$5 GAS DRIVE-OFF SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT CASEY'S ON EAST PLATT.

THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE GOT A REPORT OF A MAILBOX BEING SHOT OVER THE WEEKEND NEAR BELLEVUE, AND A SPRAGUEVILLE MAIN REPORTED HIS TRUCK

THE CHARTER WAS PRESENTED BY THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR, CONNIE INMAN OF MECHANICSVILLE. THERE WERE GUESTS FROM ABOUT A DOZEN LIONS CLUBS IN THE AREA AND MANY BROUGHT A GIFT. THE CLUB HAS ALREADY HAD ONE
SUCCESSFUL FUND RAISER, SELLING FOOD AT THE BEIDLER'S FARM EQUIPMENT CLOSE-OUT SALE AND ITS FIRST COMMUNITY GOOD DEED WAS TO AGREE TO SPONSOR A LITLE LEAGUE TEAM IN MAQUOKETA. THE CLUB MEETS TWICE MONTHLY AT THE NEW YMCA. THERE WAS A LONGTIME LIONS CLUB IN THE
PAST, BUT IT CEASED MEETING AROUND 10 YEARS AGO.

SUNNY AND NICE TODAY...IN THE 70'S.

GLORY BE!

THE CITY OF MAQUOKETA HAS BEEN NOTIFIED IT HAS RECEIVED THE $200,000
FEDERAL GRANT TO HELP CLEAN UP THE DOWNTOWN FIRE DEBRIS.
WITH THE EPA GRANT, THE CITY NOW HAS OVER $400,000 TO DO THE JOB.
MAYOR TOM MESSERLI SAID NOW THAT THE EPA FEDERAL GRANT HAS BEEN
SECURED, THE CITY CAN MOVE FORWARD TO GET THE AREA CLEANED UP.

PARTY CLOUDY TODAY....SOME RAIN AROUND 3 THIS AFTERNOON.....NOW THE SUN IS SHINING AGAIN.

ON THE POLICE BLOTTER: SOMEONE HAS TAKEN A TURTLE FROM A MAQUOKETA BACK YARD. ANGIE KOONTZ, 115 N. OLIVE STREET, REPORTED TO THE MAQUOKETA POLICE DEPARTMENT AT 4:28 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON THAT A BOXED TURTLE
HAD BEEN IN HER BACKYARD IN A CAGE. SHE SAID THE TURTLE WAS TAKEN
FROM THE CAGE. THE TURTLE IS ORANGE, GREEN AND YELLOW. IF YOU
FIND THE TURTLE, CALL THE MAQUOKETA POLICE DEPARTMENT OR ANGIE
KOONTZ.

THE MAQUOKETA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED TO A SMALL
MOBILE HOME FIRE AT 503 S. VERMONT AT AROUND 7 LAST NIGHT. TURNED OUT
THAT A SMALL TRAILER NEXT TO THE GARAGE WAS ON FIRE. FIREMEN SPENT
ABOUT 30 MINUTES AT THE SCENE.

MOSTLY CLOUDY TODAY...NO RAIN...AND HIGH OF 75. RAIN IS IN OUR FORECAST FOR THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS.

THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD HAS HIRED A NEW PRINCIPAL FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL. CHRISTINE SNELL WILL START AUGUST 1ST. SHE COMES FROM
WESTERN IOWA, BUT IS A CLINTON NATIVE. AT THE WEST HARRISON HIGH SCHOOL, SHE HAS BEEN THE ADMINISTRATOR FOR THE GRADES 7-12 BUILDING FOR THE PAST
FOUR YEARS.

THE CITY COUNCIL LAST NIGHT SPENT $63,965 FOR A PAVEMENT PATCHER TO FIX POTHOLES IN THE CITY. THE MACHINE WILL ALLOW THE CITY STREET DEPARTMENT TO BE MORE SELF SUFFICIENT AND NOT HAVE TO RELY
ON CONTRACTORS. LAST YEAR, THE CITY SPENT $21,000 TO HAVE CONTRACTORS PATCH POT HOLES. SO...THE MACHINE IS SUPPOSED TO PAY FOR ITSELF IN SEVERAL YEARS AND LAST ABOUT 20 YEARS.

POWER WAS OUT AROUND MIDNIGHT LAST NIGHT FOR 90 MINUTES...IN SOME PARTS OF THE CITY. A RACCOON GOT INTO A TRANSFORMER AND CAUSED THE OUTAGE.

MAY IS IOWA EGG MONTH. IOWA EGG PRODUCERS LEAD THE NATION IN
EGG PRODUCTION, PRODUCING AROUND 14-BILLION EGGS PER YEARS.
THAT IS, THEIR CHICKENS DO IT.

IT HAS BEEN A NICE DAY....HIGH IN 70'S. RAIN COMING TUESDAY AND
WEDNESDAY.'

WHILE DOING THE AUCTION SHOW SATURDAY, AT THE 10 A.M. NEWS BREAK,
A MAQUOKETAN FROM WAY BACK STOPPED IN.
BERNIE AULWES, MAQUKETA CITY MANAGER FROM 1964 - 69 AND BEFORE THAT,
CITY FINANCE OFFICER. LOOKED GOOD.....LITTLE GRAY HAIR OF COURSE.
RETIRED AND LIVING IN SOUTHERN IOWA. I ONLY HAD A COUPLE MINUTES TO TALK TO HIM AND TOLD HIM TO EMAIL ME WITH MORE INFO ON WHAT HE'S BEEN DOING SINCE LEAVING TOWN. SO, WHEN I HEAR FROM HIM, I'LL PASS ON MORE
INFORMATION. WAS A GOOD CITY MANAGER.

THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOLS EDUCATION FUND BREAKFAST WAS HELD THIS MORNING AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. ESTABLISHED 6 YEARS AGO, IN ITS FIRST 5 YEARS, IT HAS DISTRIBUTED $72,000 TO ENHANCE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. TRACY WALLER, CHAIRPERSON OF THE ADVISORY COUNCIL AND MEMBER JANE SCHMIDT CONDUCTED THE PROGRAM. WALLER GAVE SPECIAL RECOGNITION TO THE FAMILY OF THE LATE JERRY ANDRESEN. ANDRESEN'S WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN WERE AT THE BREAKFAST. $4,500 HAS BEEN GIVEN BY THE FAMILY TO THE EDUCATION FUND, LAST MONTH, AND THE LARGEST MEMORIAL TO DATE.
THEN RECIPIENTS OF THIS YEAR'S GRANTS WERE ANNOUNCED. THE LARGEST OF $4,448 WENT TO THE HIGH SCHOOL MATH PROGRAM AND WILL BE USED
FOR A INTERACTIVE GEOMETRY SYSTEM. $4,268 AWAS GIVE FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY RESOURCE CENTER. SEVERAL GRANTS WERE AWARDED FOR THE PURCHASE OF 8 ELMOS, THE LATEST IN PROJECTION SYSTEMS. THEN A GRANT FOR $1,814 FOR A WIND TUNNEL FOR CO2 CARS.....$300 FOR BOOKS AT MIDDLE SCHOOL....$600 FOR CIRCLE BOOKS AT MIDDLE SCHOOL. $299 FOR BETTER PARENTS MATERIALS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.....$663 FOR HOSA BOWL MATERIALS TO HELP TEACH MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY.....AND $807 FOR NEW SEWING MACHINES AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL. ANYONE CAN GIVE TO THE EDUCATION FUND AND THIS MONEY MAKES AN IMPACT ON THE EDUCATION OF MAQUOKETA STUDENTS BY FUNDING PROJECTS OUTSIDE THE NORMAL SCHOOL BUDGET.

GOT AN EMAIL FROM JERRY AND DOROTHY RASMUSSEN, WHO HAVE BEEN AT
THEIR NEW HOME IN EAST WENATCHEE, WASHINGTON, FOR NEARLY A MONTH
ALREADY. THEY ARE 15 MINUTES FROM SON PHIL'S HOME. JERRY SAID
THEY ARE NOW PRETTY WELL SETTLED AFTER A HECTIC MONTH. HE DIDN'T SAY HOW HE LIKED IT OUT THERE. BUT, I BET THEY DO. HE IS KEEPING UP WITH MAQUOKETA NEWS WITH THIS DAILY REPORT. I HAVE HIS EMAIL ADDRESS AND REGULAR MAIL ADDRESS IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE IT. I BELIEVE THEIR CONDO IN MAQUOKETA HAS NOT YET BEEN SOLD.

DISPLAY ON FRONT LAWN.
LOOKS LIKE THIS IS SOMETHING RICH AND SHIRLEY CURRENT MIGHT DO.
RETIRED FOLKS CAN DO THESE THINGS.
MUST HAVE BEEN A LITTLE HARD FOR THEM TO STAY UP LATE....

THIS IS CRAIG SCHROEDER AND HIS FIANCE' MARIA. THEY MET AT MY 61 DRIVE-IN
THEATRE 3 YEARS AGO AND HAVE BEEN TO THE DRIVE-IN OFTEN SINCE THEN.
CRAIG EMAILED ME A COUPLE WEEKS AGO AND SAID HE WAS GOING TO PROPOSE
TO MARIA AT THE DRIVE-IN. AND THIS HAPPENED THIS PAST FRIDAY NIGHT AROUND 8:30. HE HAD ARRANGED FOR THE FLOWERS TO BE DELIVERED TO KMAQ DURING THE DAY AND I TOOK THEM OUT FRIDAY NIGHT. SEVERAL PATRONS SAW HIM GET ON HIS KNEE IN FRONT OF CAR AND PROPOSE TO MARIA .....SHE SAID YES. LATER AT CONCESSION STAND WHEN I TOOK THIS PHOTO, MARIA STILL HAD TEARS IN HER EYES. NOTE THE SPECIAL SHIRT THEY ARE WEARING THAT THEY HAVE HAD FOR A COUPLE YEARS AND WEAR EVERYTIME THEY VISIT THE 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE. THEY WERE BOTH HAPPY. SHE IS FROM DYERSVILLE AND GOES TO ST. AMBROSE UNIVERSITY AND HE IS FROM KIELER, WISCONSIN AND WORKS FOR A CREAMERY IN DUBUQUE AND TO COLLEGE AT WHITEWATER. NO WEDDING PLANS YET. NICE COUPLE. LAST MARRIAGE PROPOSALS (2) AT THE DRIVE-IN (NONE LAST YEAR) WERE IN 2007. NO MARRIAGE OUT THERE YET.

BOB WAGENER TO POSTPONE OPENING NIGHT. HERE IS THE CAR TO BEAT!! THE BIG 2 B....THE KMAQ CAR. ACTUALLY, OWNED AND DRIVEN BY KEVIN BRAME, SON OF MR. AND MRS. RANDY BRAME OF RURAL MAQUKETA. THE BRAMES OWN C & R TIRES ON EAST PLATT IN MAQUOKETA. THIS PHOTO JUST TAKEN DAYS AGO SHOWS THE BEAUTIFUL RACE CAR READY FOR THE 2009 SEASON. GOOD LUCK KEVIN!!~
