THIS IS PROBABLY THE LONGEST BUILDING IN MAQUOKETA. IT IS ON JACOBEN DRIVE IN THE INDUSTRIAL PARK. AT THE OTHER END, HIDDEN HERE, IS THE OFFICE BUILDING AND IT IS ADJACENT TO HIGHWAY 64 AT THE EAST END OF
MAQUOKETA. WHEN IT WAS BUILDT YEARS AGO, IT WAS CALLED THE "HOOF" BUILDING. TODAY, MELLING SLEEVE COMPANY OCCUPIES PART OF THE BUILDING, APPROXIMATELY 30,000 SQUARE FEET. AND, MOVING INTO THE BUILDING SOON AND LOCATING IN THE SPACE EAST OF MELLING SLEEVE, A NEW MANUFACTURER FOR MAQUOKETA. ARCHITECTURAL WALL SYSTEMS OF WEST DES MOINES IS THE NAME OF THE COMPANY AND IT IS EXPANDING IN MAQUOKETA. STEVE MOORE IN MAQUOKETA, ONE OF THOSE INSTRUMENTAL IN GETTING THE COMPANY TO LOCATE IN MAQUOKETA, TOLD ME THE FIRM WILL USE ABOUT 57,000 SQUARE FEET AND WILL BE CREATING ABOUT 15 JOBS. THE FIRM DOES BUSINESS NATIONALLY. THE GLAZING CONTRACTOR AND MANUFACTURER BUILDS WALLS, BOTH INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR, FOR COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS. ESTABLISHED IN 1991, THE COMPANY RANKS AS THE 9TH LARGEST GLAZING CONTRACTORS IN THE COUNTRY. THEY WILL BE HIRING IN ANOTHER MONTH OR MORE AND THEIR WAGE SCALE IS FROM $12 TO $20 AN HOUR. SO...TWO NEW INDUSTRIES STARTING UP IN MAQUOKETA. IT IS WINDY AND COOL TODAY....ONLY IN THE 30'S. A FROST WARNING TONIGHT,
WITH A LOW IN THE 20'S. WE HAD SOME SNOW FLURRIES AROUND 10 THIS MORNING. THE MAQUOKETA RIVER HAD MINOR FLOODING OVER THE WEEKEND,ON MAINLY THE FARM LAND AROUND IT.

THE JACKSON COUNTY UNEMPLOYMENT RATE FELL A BIT IN MARCH. IT WAS
5.9 PERCENT IN FEBRUARY AND WENT DOWN TO 5.6 PERCENT IN MARCH.

THE COMMITTEE RAISING MONEY TO OPEN THE OLD OUTDOOR POLL THIS SUMMER HAS REACHED THEIR GOALL OF $25,000. IN FACT, THEY EXCEEDED THEIR GOAL. THE GROUP IS EXPECTED TO PRESENT FINAL FUNDING FIGURES TO THE CITY COUNCIL AT THE MAY 5TH MEETING. SATURDAY NIGHT, ABOUT 500 PEOPLE WATCHED THE "SWINGING WITH THE CARDS" DANCE CONTEST AT THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL. EIGHT MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL DANCE TEAM MEMBERS WERE PAIRED WITH LOCAL CELEBRITIES. THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN BY MY WIFE NANCY IN 1980. WE WERE ATTENDING A "SHOW-A-RAMA" MOVIE CONVENTION AT HALLMARK CARD'S "CROWN CENTER HOTEL"IN KANSAS CITY. CHARLTON HESTON WAS THERE PROMOTING A MOVIE AND THE STUDIO INVITED CONVENTION GOERS TO THEIR HOTEL SUITE TO MEET
CHARLTON. I REMEMBER HE WAS VERY FRIENDLY. AND, I REMEMBER TELLING HIM THAT I LIKED ALL OF HIS MOVIES, BUT MY FAVORITE WAS THE MOVIE,
"THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH", AND HIS ROLE AS THE MANAGER OF THE
FAMOUS CIRCUS. THAT MOVIE WON THE ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST MOVIE
OF THE YEAR, IN THE EARLY 50'S. I ALSO HAVE HIS AUTOGRAPH. I WISH I
WOULD HAVE KEPT THOSE BIG DARK GLASSES I WAS WEARING. YES, HE WAS A LITTLE TALLER THAN I. CHARLTON HESTON DIED LAST SATURDAY NIGHT
AT THE AGE OF 84. HE WAS 56 IN THIS PHOTO.
