NICE TODAY...HIGH IN MID 60'S.

A LONGTIME MAQUOKETA TEACHER, MARIAN HARRISON HERRICK, AGE 97, OF WENDALL, MARYLAND, DIED OCTOBER 27 IN MARYLAND. SHE WAS BORN TO WILLIAM AND CORA HARRISON IN MAQUOKETA AND GRADUATED FROM MAQUOKETA HIGH AND THEN ATTENDED MAQUOKETA JUNIOR COLLEGE. AFTER GRADUATING FROM IOWA, SHE RETURNED TO MAQUOKETA TO TEACH AT THE HIGH SCHOOL UNTIL GETTING MARRIED AND MOVING TO WENDALL. SHE IS SURVIVED BY THREE COUSINS, INCLUDING HELEN FEENEY OF MAQUOKETA.

AT THE STATE CROSS COUNTRY MEET SATURDAY AT FORT DODGE, MAQUOKETA'S TRISHA MILLER, AT STATE FOR THE 3RD YEAR IN A ROW, FINISHED IN 4TH PLACE IN THE CLASS 3-A GIRL'S RACE, ONE SPOT BETTER THAN LAST YEAR. HER TIME WAS 14:58, 34 SECONDS BEHIND THE FIRST PLACE RUNNER.

THE MAQUOEKTA FOOTBALL CARDIANLS LOST THEIR FINAL GAME OF SEASON FRIDAY NIGHT HERE AT GOODENOW FIELD,
48 TO 28 TO WESTERN DUBUQUE. BOTH THE VARSITY AND SOPHOMORE TEAMS FINISHED THE SEASON WITH A 4 AND 5 RECORD.

DEWITT, NORTHEAST AND BELLEVUE ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT. DEWITT WILL HOST FAIRFIELD AND WE WILL BROADCAST THE GAME ON BOTH KMAQ AM AND FM AT 6:45 WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

IN MAGISTRATE COURT, TWO MEN WERE CHARGED AFTER ATTEMPTING TO BREAK INTO THE FORMER FAMILY PHARMACY BUILDING ON WEST PLATT STREET TUESDAY NIGHT.
CHARGED WERE NATHAN HAYLOCK, AGE 19 AND MATTHEW ADLER, AGE 21. THE POLICE REPORT SAID ADLER THREW A ROCK THROUGH THE WINDOW IN AN ATTEMPT TO GAIN ENTRY.

MAQUOKETA POLICE AND JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES EXECUTED A SEARCH WARRANT AT A WESTERN AVENUE APARTMENT IN MAQUOKETA LAST NIGHT AND TWO PEOPLE FACE SIX CHARGES EACH AS A RESULT. HEATHER SAMS, AGE 21 AND ROBERT SAMS, AGE 51, ARE BOTH CHARGED WITH POSESSION OF A CONTROLED SUBSTANCE AND OTHER CHARGES, INCLUDING CHILD ENDANGERMENT, AS HEATHER SAMS' TWO MONTH OLD CHILD WAS IN THE APARTMENT AT THE TIME. BOTH APPEARED IN MAGISTRATE COURT THIS MORNING AND WERE RELEASED ON $10,000 UNSECURED BOND.

AL MUHLHAUSEN, MAQUOKETA VOLUNTEER FIREMAN, WAS ON KMAQ JUST TALK SHOW THIS MORNING TO TALK ABOUT THE STATE FIREMEN'S CONVENTION THAT WILL BE HELD IN MAQUOKETA NEXT SEPTEMBER 3-7. IT WILL BE HEADQUARTERED AT THE FAIRGROUNDS AND MUHLHAUSEN, KEITH BURNS AND RICK SCHMIDT ARE CO-CHAIRING THE EVENT. RESIDENTS OF MAQUOKETA WHO WANT TO PUT UP POLITICAL SIGNS FOR PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES MAY DO SO AT ANY TIME. MAQUOKETA POLICE CHIEF BRAD KORANDA SAID HIS DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN INSTRUCTED NOT TO ENFORCE THE CITY'S ORDINANCE WHICH PROHIBITS NATIONAL POLITICAL SIGNS IN PRIVATE YARDS 45 DAYS BEFORE THE ELECTION OR EVENT. THIS IS THE RESULT OF A COURT DECISION IN 1994 BETWEEN A RESIDENT AND THE CITY OF GLADSTONE, MISSOURI.

DR. ERIC PETERSON, D.O. IN MAQUOKETA, WAS THIS WEEK OFFICIALLY HIRED AS CLINTON COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINER, REPLACING DR. PAUL KOOB OF MAQUOKETA, WHO RESIGNED IN LATE SEPTEMBER. PETERSON HAS BEEN ACTING EXAMINER SINCE THEN. ITS A PARTTIME POSITION. DR. PETERSON AS BEEN WITH MEDICAL ASSOCIATES IN MAQUOKETA SINCE 1998.
HE RECEIVED HIS TRAINING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE IN DES MOINES. MEDICAL ASSOCIATES WILL MOVE INTO NEW OFFICES THIS SPRING, IN THE FORMER JACK AND JILL BUILDING ON WEST PLATT, BEING REMODELED BY STOCKHAM AND SON CONTRACTORS.

MAQUOKETA FIRE CHIEF MARK BECK WAS HONORED AT THE FIRST EVER MAQUOKETA OPTIMIST CLUB FIREMEN APPRECIATION BANQUET LAST NIGHT. BECK RECEIVED A PLAQUE. HE HAS BEEN CHIEF FOR NEARLY 10 YEARS AND HAS BEEN WITH THE DEPARTMENT FOR 25 YEARS. ALSO, ALL FIREMEN RECEIVED A SHAVING KIT FROM THE CLUB.

HOSPICE OF JACKSON COUNTY TOLD THE SUPERVISORS AT THEIR MEETING THIS MORNING AT THE COURTHOUSE THAT THEY WANT TO BUY BICENTENNIAL PARK, JUST NORTH OF THE HOSPITAL, FOR A SIX-BED FACILITY. SO, AN APPRAISAL WILL BE DONE. THE PARK HAS RIVER FRONTAGE, BUT IS NOT USED.
MAINLY, BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING IN IT. NO PICNIC TABLES, OR PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT. IT IS BASICALLY A WALKING OR MEDITATION PARK.

THE CAST HAS BEEN ANNOUNED FOR "A CHRISTMAS STORY", THAT WILL BE PRESENTED BY THE PEACE PIPE PLAYERS
IN LATE NOVEMBER AND EARLY DECEMBER. SHELLEY HOYE WILL DIRECT, ASSISTED BY LORI HOUSTON AND REBECCA KUTSCH. OVER THE WEEKEND, ON THE POLICE BLOTTER, IT WAS REPORTED THAT SOMEONE ATTEMPTED TO BREAK INTO THE CAN CITY STORE ON EAST PLATT.

CHARLES MEYER OF NORTH ELIZA STREET REPORTED SOMEONE TOOK A RADIO FROM HIS UNLOCKED VEHICLE.

AND FOUL LANGUAGE WAS REPORTED WRITTEN ON A STOP SIGN AT SOUTH 4TH STREET AND MAPLE.

A PRIVATE WAGON RIDE AT ABOUT 1:30 SUNDAY MORNING NEAR CLINTON, SENT 13 OF ABOUT 25 RIDERS TO THE HOSPITAL. ONE TAKEN WITH SERIOUS INJURIES TO IOWA CITY. THE FARM TRACTOR DRIVER APPARENTLY BECAME DISORIETNED IN THE DARK AND THE TRACTOR AND WAGON ROLLED DOWN ABOUT 30 FEET OVER THE EDGE OF A QUARRY.

THE MAQUOKETA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HAS ANNOUNED THAT IT WILL HOST A MEET THE CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES MEETING WEDNESDAY, OCT 24TH AT CITY HALL, WITH KMAQ'S LEIGHTON HEPKER AS MODERATOR. IT WILL START AT 7 PM AND WILL BE ON THE LOCAL ACCESS CHANNEL.

ZACK BELLENDIR THREW FOR 5 TOUCHDOWN PASSES. MAQUOKETA INTERCEPTED 3 PASSES. THE CARDINALS ARE NOW ARE 4 AND 3. CLEAR CREEK HAS JUST WON ONE GAME THIS SEASON.

JEFF AND MEGAN ROSENBERG OF HAMPTON, IOWA ARE PARENTS OF A GIRL BORN THURSDAY AT A MASON CITY HOSPITAL. PATERNAL GRANDPARENTS ARE JACK AND PAM ROSENBERG OF MAQUOKETA.

RETIRED MARINE BRIG. GEN. CHARLES MITCHELL IS THE KEY VOLUNTEER ON THAT BIG PROJECT. HIS WIFE, THE FORMER BONNIE WELLS, IS THE CURATOR OF THE MUSEUM ON THE FAIRGROUNDS IN MAQUOKETA.

THE IOWA HAWKEYES TODAY UPSET ILLINOIS...WINNING 10 TO 6 AT IOWA CITY.

A SCARECROW BY KAREN LANE AND THE MAQUOKETA CARE CENTER WON TOP HONORS IN A SCARECROW DESIGN CONTEST AT THE OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER. THE PRIZE WAS A $50.00 CERTIFICATE.

KAITLIN LUETT HAS BEEN AWARDED THE BROMAN FAMILY FINE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP FOR 2007. SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF DENNIS AND DIANE LUETT OF MAQUOKETA AND IS ATTENDING THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA MAJORING IN COMMUNICATIONS.

WORD HAS BEEN RECEIVED OF THE DEATH OF PAUL HANCHAR, AGE 61, OF LITTLE ELM, TEXAS. HE DIED OCTOBER 9TH. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE MONDAY IN LEWISVILLE, TEXAS.
SURVIVORS INCLUDE HIS MOTHER, RUTH HANCHAR OF MAQUOKETA, HIS WIFE DIANE, TWO SONS, ONE DAUGHTER AND A SISTER AND BROTHER.

I SAW "THE WIZARD OF OZ" AT THE OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER LAST NIGHT. THE AUDITORIUM WAS NEARLY FULL...AND IT WAS A VERY GOOD, FUNNY SHOW. CONGRATS TO PAM CRAWFORD, THE DIRECTOR AND HER ASSISTANT MARY GILMORE. JUNE WAHL DID A GREAT JOB AS THE WICKED WITCH AND JACK WILLEY ALSO WAS A BIG HIT AS THE WIZARD. I COULD MENTION ANOTHER DOZEN THAT DID A TERRIFIC JOB.....GOOD SHOW!!!

FIRST...THE OTHER DAY WHEN I MENTIONED THAT BILL MERRICK IS THE LONGEST IN BUSINESS BARBER IN MAQUOKETA...I GAVE HIS STARTING DATE AS 1972....HE HAS BEEN BARBERING AT SAME LOCATION DOWNTOWN SICE 1952. AND HE HAS BEEN VERY ACTIVE OVER THE YEARS WITH THE AMERICAN LEGION AND THE VFW.

THE MAQUOKETA POLICE ASSOCIATION IS ASKING FOR A 6 PERCENT PAY RAISE AND SOME CHANGES IN HEALTH INSURANCE AND TRAINING PAY. THEIR FIRST SESSION WITH COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES AND THE CITY MANAGER WAS THIS MORNING. POLICE OFFICER PAT FIER AND DISPATCHER ANDREA WERNER REPRESENTED THE ASSOCIATION.
THERE IS ANOTHER EMPLOYEE ASSOCIATION WHICH COVERS PRIMARILY STREET EMPLOYEES. THEY HAVE NOT PRESENTED THEIR REQUESTS TO THE CITY.

SOME MAQUOKETA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HAD FUN LAST NIGHT OUTSIDE THE CHURCH, BUILDING A 25-FOOT LONG BANANA SPLIT. AND HERE IT IS! ANYONE IN THE COMMUNITY WAS INVITED TO BRING A SPOON AND HELP DEVOUR IT. LOOKS LIKE THERE WERE QUITE A FEW WITH SPOONS. GOOD THING IT WAS A 50- PLUS DEGREE NIGHT......80-PLUS DEGREE WEATHER WE RECENTLY HAD WOULD HAVE TURNED THE SPIT INTO A MALT QUICKLY.

COOL NIGHT LAST NIGHT...45...COOL DAY TODAY...IN 50'S.

JOSE MARTINEZ, AGE 17, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS REPORTED AS A RUNAWAY ON MONDAY NIGHT AND NOW HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH STEALING TWO CARS. HE WAS PICKED UP ON HIGHWAY 61 IN CLINTON COUNTY LAST NIGHT ALLEGEDLY DRIVING ANOTHER STOLEN VEHICLE FROM DUBUQUE.

MAQUOKETA FIREMEN WERE CALLED TO A TREE AND FIELD FIRE AT 2:25 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON...WHERE 1 TO 2 ACRES OF CORN ON THE TOM FULLER FARM WERE BURNED. THE FIRE STARTED AS A TREE FIRE AND SPREAD TO THE CORN AND FIREMEN WERE AT THE SCENE FOR A COUPLE HOURS.

LOREN LUBBEN, RETIRED MAQUOKETA FARMER AND BANKER,
WAS OPERATING A RESTORED VINTAGE TRACTOR YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AND IT TIPPED OVER IN A FIELD NEAR THE COMFORT INN HOTEL JUST SOUTH OF MAQUOKETA. THE RESCUE SQUAD WAS CALLED BUT WAS NOT NEEDED AS LUBBEN WAS NOT TRAPPED. HE WAS INJURED AND WAS AIRLIFTED TO UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS AND CLINICS IN IOWA CITY. I HEARD THIS AFTERNOON THAT HE HAS BROKEN RIBS AND WILL BE
OKAY. STATE TROOPER MILAN JAMES SAID HE WAS NOT ABLE TO TALK TO LUBBEN TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED.

A BIRTH. JULIE AND JOHN CLAUS OF KEOKUK HAD A BOY LAST SATURDAY AT KEOKUK. GRANDPARENTS ARE CHUCK AND RITA WHARTON OF MAQUOKETA AND DAN CLAUS OF DELMAR.

IT IS NATIONAL 4-H WEEK.....AND WE HAVE A GREAT 4-H PROGRAM HERE IN JACKSON COUNTY.

COOLER TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND IS LOOKING GREAT.
LEAVES ARE STARTING TO TURN AND VIEWING WILL BEGIN THIS WEEKEND, ESPECIALLY TO AREAS NORTH OF MAQUOKETA.

FORMER MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING COACH JEFF TAMPIR WILL BE INDUCTED INTO THE IOWA WRESTLING HALL
OF FAME ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27TH IN DES MOINES. TAMPIR WILL BE ONE OF FIVE COACHES INDUCTED IN THE CEREMONY AT AIRPORT HOLIDAY INN DURING THE HALL OF FAME BANQUET, STARTING AT 7 P.M. TAMPIR, NOW RETIRED,
CAME TO MAQUOKETA IN 1970 AND BEGAN COACHING 7TH AND 8TH GRADE WRESTLING. HE WAS NAMED HEAD COACH OF THE MAQUOKETA CARDINALS IN 1988 AND HELD THE POST FOR 13 YEARS. HIS DUAL MEET RECORD WAS 190-45-2. HIS TEAMS WON OR SHARED TEN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND HE COACHED 53 STATE QUALIFIERS INCLUDING THREE STATE CHAMPIONS.

THREE VEHICLE THEFTS LAST NIGHT. VINCENT MEDINGER'S WAS STOLEN UP ON THE CAVES ROAD. BRIAN BEEDLES OF GALENA WAS FOUND SOUTH OF MAQUOKETA AND HAD BEEN STOLEN EARLIER IN EVENING IN GALENA AND A TRUCK WAS STOLEN AT BURNETT THIEL FORD THAT WAS OWNED BY A WHEATLAND MAN. THE BEEDLE VEHICLE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS BEEN RECOVERED.

AN ATTEMPTED BREAK-IN LAST NIGHT AT CAN CITY AND JIM MAYBERRY REPORTED SOMEONE BROKE INTO A MACHINE SHED AT HIS FARM ON 175TH STREET.

THEY ARE BRICKING PART OF THE FORMER JACK AND JILL BUILDING TODAY, THAT WILL BE NEW MEDICAL OFFICES AND
THE LARGE PARKING LOT IS BEING RESURFACED TODAY WITH
ASPHALT. THAT CORNER IS STARTING TO REALLY LOOK NICE ON WEST PLATT STREET.

BUT..YES...THE BURNED OUT DEPOT IS STILL STANDING ON EAST PLATT AND ALSO STANDING, THE UGLY FORMER GAS STATION BUILDING ON EAST PLATT, ON THE CORNER JUST EAST OF THE FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH.

IT IS NOT AS EASY FOR MEN AND BOYS TO GET A HAIRCUT THESE DAYS AS BOB THE BARBER HAD A SHOULDER OPERATION AND WILL NOT BE CUTTING HAIR UNTIL LATE NEXT MONTH. HE HAS BEEN A BARBER HERE IN TOWN FOR MANY, MANY YEARS.
BUT..NOT AS LONG AS BILL MERRICK. BILL HAS HAD HIS SHOP IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA SINCE 1972.

TUESDAY NIGHT IS STILL BINGO NIGHT AT THE FAIRGROUNDS

Strange weather day today in Maquoketa. We started off with sunshine.
Then had mid-day rain and later in afternoon, sunny and beaufiful.
High today in upper 60's. Cooler tonight and tomorrow.
Hiliary Clinton made her scheduled appearance in Maquoketa
last night. She got a nice Maquoketa welcome. See two photos I took
of her below this report.
The Maquoketa Cardinals won again Friday night, beating West Liberty there,
42 to 21. The are now 3 and 3 for the season and 2 and 2 in the District.
They play Clear Creek Amana there this Friday. Should be a good game too.
Charles Reistroffer of Maquoketa hit a deer at 7:19 last night on highway 64 West, near the Maquoketa airport. No injuries.
The Town & Country Quilters hosted a quilt show yesterday as part of the Pioneer Days event at the fairgrounds. Winner of the raffle quilt was Thais Grosskruger.
First place for embroidery butterfly quilt went to Ruth Wall. Second place called Curves in Motion went to Nettie Tracy. Third place was a flannel quilt and the winner was Pat Strait. Fourth place called quilt Diva went to Marilyn Rankin.
School Board meeting tonight.
New asphalt project is near completion on South Jones. And paving of Western Avenue began today and will take 2 weeks. With those two close by street
closed, there is a lot of traffic on the adjacent streets. It will be nice to have both open again.
A new movie, filmed in Iowa...THE FINAL SEASON...with Tom Arnold, had its premier this weekend in Iowa and opens nationwide this Friday. Supposed to be good, and a hit, and will also open this Friday here in Maquoketa. You'll want to see this true-story baseball movie, rated PG.
"The Wizard of Oz" will be presented this weekend at the Ohnward Center in Maquoketa. Tickets on sale there and at Osterhaus Pharmacy.

Upper 80's again tomorrow and Sunday.

A stove caught fire in Maquoketa this morning, but the homeowner, Mrs. Brian, Charity Crist at 414 Cynthia Drive, put it out with a fire extinguisher before firemen arrived. Firemen used fans to clear smoke out of house, but only damage was to the stove.

The Habitat for Humanity local drive is up to $41,000...$9,000 still short of goal...to build a home for a local family. Alliance Pipepline started the drive with $25,000 and the rest has been raised locally, including $3,500 from the Maquoketa Area Community Foundation.
Six families have applied to get the home. Volunteers and the family will build it. Still
to be selected...the family...the location...and all after the goal has been met.

Pioneer Day is this Sunday at the Jackson County Historical Society Museum on the fairgrounds in Maquoketa. Activities from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. including a Cowboy Cookout over the noon hour. The public is invited.

Maquoketa plays at West Liberty tonight...two pretty even teams playing each other.

Hiliary comes to Maquoketa Sunday night at 6:30...to the Middle School.

ANOTHER BURGLARY REPORTED TODAY...THE 4TH THIS WEEK. SHAWN BRADY REPORTED THAT SOMEONE HAD BROKEN INTO THE MAIN STREET CAFE, NEXT TO MAX RAY JEWELRY, IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA. A GLASS WAS BROKEN TO GAIN
ENTRY. AN UNDETERMINED AMOUNT OF CASH WAS TAKEN FROM THE CASH REGISTER.

BOB HEAD OF MAQUOKETA HAS RAISED $17,000 FOR JACKSON COUNTY HOSPICE WITH THE SALES OF BOBBLEHEADS AND MEMORABILIA FROM HIS EXPERIENCE
WITH THE PORTLAND BEAVERS BASEBALL TEAM THIS SUMMER.
925 BOBBLEHEADS HAVE B EEN SOLD AND ANOHTER 1,000 ARE ON ORDER.
THEY SELL FOR $10 AND IT IS CLEAR PROFIT AS THE COMPANY E-SURANCE HAS PAID FOR ALL THE COSTS FOR THE BOBBLEHEADS IN THE PAST AND WILL BUY THOSE ALSO ON ORDER. ANOTHER SIGNING EVENT WILL BE HELD SOON AGAIN, AT THE MAQUOKETA STATE BANK. THE MONEY IS GOING TOWARDS CONSTRUCTION OF A HOSPICE HOUSE IN MAQUOKETA, THAT WOULD ACCOMODATE 6 PEOPLE.

THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES MOVED IN LATE SEPTEMBER TO THEIR NEW OFFICES AT THE FORMER ANDREW CARE FACILITY, OWNED BY THE COUNTY.
EVERYTHING IS MOVED OUT OF THE ROSENBERG BUILDING, WHERE THE DHS OFFICES WERE LOCATED THE LAST 5 YEARS. THE NEW DHS PHONE

BOB GAVIN IS THE NEW PRESIDENT. HE IS A LONGTIME EMPLOYEE AT THE MAQUOKETA STATE BANK. HE REPLACED DON SCHWENKER. CARRIE GILSON IS PRESIDENT ELECT. SALLY DAVIES WILL REMAIN AS SECRETARY AND KEVIN BURNS AS TREASURER. THE CLUB MEETS THURSDAY NOON AT THE DECKER HOTEL

DR. PAUL KOOB HAS RESIGNED AS BOTH CLINTON COUNTY AND JACKSON COUNTY MEDICAL
EXAMINER. HE HAS HAD THE POSITION IN JACKSON COUNTY SINCE 1984 AND IN CLINTON COUNTY SINCE 2004. THE REASON GIVEN IS THAT HE SIGHTED RIGORS OF HIS SCHEDULE
AND THE DESIRE TO REDUCE SOME STRESS IN HIS LIFE. HIS DEPUTY EXAMINER IN BOTH COUNTIES, DR. ERIC PETERSON, IS EXPECTED TO SERVE IN THE POSITION ON AN INTERIM BASIS.
