A LITTLE RAIN YESTERDAY AND TODAY, HOT (90) AND WINDY AND TORNADO WATCH IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 TONIGHT.

KMAQ TRAVEL TOOK A BUS TO MILWAUKEE YESTERDAY AND THE BUSLOAD OF CUBS FANS SAW THEIR CUBBIES BEAT MILWAUKEE 6 TO 2. OVER 40,000 AT THE PARK ON A BEAUTIFUL DAY. SO MANY COACHES, IT TOOK AN HOUR TO GET OUT OF THE BUS PARKING LOT. BUT...ALL HAD A GOOD TIME.

THE RACE CAR TESTING TRACK, AT A PROPOSED $2.5 MILLION COST, THAT WAS PLANNED FOR NORTHERN JACKSON COUNTY, WILL NOT BE BUILDT THERE. THERE WAS SO MUCH OPPOSITION AND THEREFORE, THE DUBUQUE MAN TOLD THE SUPERVISORS THIS WEEK THAT HE WILL LOOK FOR ANOTHER LOCATION.

THE HOSPICE HOUSE PLANNED FOR THE NORTH EDGE OF MAQUOKETA IN THE SHORELINE SUBDIVISION, WILL NOT BE BUILDT THERE. A LOT OF OPPOSITION
(35 SIGNATURES) FROM SURRONDING NEIGHBORS ALONG THE MAQUOKETA RIVER PROMPED THE CITY COUNCIL TO VOTE DOWN THE PLAN. THE GROUP PROMOTING IT WILL LOOK FOR ANOTHER LOCATION FOR THE 6-ROOM FACILITY.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR JORDAN DAVIS WHO AS BEEN NAMED AS THE IOWA CLASS 3-A GOLFER OF THE YEAR BY THE IOWA HIGH SCHOOL GOLF COACHES ASSOCIATION. THE RECENTLY FINISHED 3RD AT THE IOWA STATE TOURNAMENT. SHE WENT TO STATE 3 OF HER 4 YEARS IN HIGH SCHOOL. THIS FALL, SHE WILL TAKE HER GOLFING TALENTS TO ASHFORD UNIVERSITY IN CLINTON. HER PARENTS ARE DAVE AND DENISE DAVIS OF DELMAR.'

THE MAQUKETA CITY COUNCIL WAS TOLD THIS WEEK THE ARC (AREA RECREATION CENTER) WIL LIKELY BE DONE AUGUST 31ST, AHEAD OF SCHEDULE.

THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MET WITH JACK AND PAM ROSENBERG OF MAQUOKETA THIS WEEK TO TALK ABOUT CONTINUING THE LEASE ON THERE BUILDING IN MAQUOKETA. THE BUILDING ON OLIVE STREET HAS BEEN LEASED TO THE COUNTY THE LAST 5 YEARS. THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES OCCUPIES ABOUT HALF THE BUILDING. THE GANNON CENTER WAS IN THE OTHER HALF UNTIL GOING OUT OF BUSINESS. THE ROSENBERGS PRESENTED A NEW LEASE PROPOSAL REQUESTING A 12 PERCENT RATE INCRESE, TO $3,922 A MONTH. THEY ARE ASKING FOR ANOTHER 5 YEAR LEASE. THE BUILDING FOR MANY YEARS WAS THE HOME OF ROSENBERG AUTO SUPPLY. IT WAS EXTENSIVELY REMODLED FOR THE COUNTY. IF THE SUPERVISORS SIGN A NEW LEASE, THEY WILL THEN ALSO TRY TO RENT THE UNUSED PORTION OF THE BUILDING.

AMY MANNING OF MAQUOKETA AND JOSEPH KUNDE OF MAQUOKETA ARE PARENTS OF A BOY BORN FRIDAY AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL. GRANDPARENTS ARE CINDY MANNING AND RICHARD MANNING OF MAQUOKETA.

MARCELEN SKEFFINGTON, AGE 77, OF DEWITT, DIED SUDDENLY TUESDAY AT HER HOME. HER HUSBAND IS "SWEDE" AND THEY WERE CO-OWNERS OF SKEFFINGTON'S JACK AND JILL STORE IN MAQUOKETA FOR MANY YEARS. SHE IS SURVIVED BY HER HUSBAND, 6 CHILDREN AND 12 GRANDCHILDREN AND TWO BROTHERS, INCLUDING CARROL HEURETZ OF MAQUOKETA.
