LAST NIGHT BY 20 POINTS. AT BENTON, THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS LOST TO BENTON.

THE BANK IN DELMAR WAS ROBBED JUST BEFORE 10 THIS MORNING.
THE GUY, GUESSED TO BE ABOUT 30, WITH BEARD, SAID HE HAD A GUN, BUT DID NOT SHOW IT. HE LEFT ON FOOT, BUT WAS SEEN GETTING INTO A RED PICKUP AND AUTHORITIES ARE STILL LOOKING FOR HIM. NO INDICATION AS TO WHAT HE GOT AWAY WITH.

MAQUOKETA HAS A GENERAC PLANT AND GENERAC WAS SOLD TO AN EAST COAST GROUP LAST NOVEMBER. THERE ARE 3 OTHER GENERATOR PLANTS IN WISCONSIN. ON THE INTERNET YESTERDAY WAS A STORY THAT GENERAC WAS SOLD FOR $2 BILLION DOLLARS. NO WORD ON WHAT FUTURE PLANS ARE FOR THE COMPANY.

CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT....WAS KIND OF GLOOMY. IT'S THE TIME OF THE YEAR FOR WORKING ON THE BUDGET AND A BIG DEFICIT LOOMS. CITY MANAGER BRIAN WAGNER TOLD THE COUNICL THAT WHEN HE STARTED WORK ON THE BUDGET, THERE WAS A $258,583 DEFICIT. THE CITY MANAGER WENT THROUGH A LIST OF WAYS TO CUT THE BUDGET, INCLUDING CUTTING A POLICE OFFICER. OFF THE RECORD, HE EVEN SAID HE MAY NOT TAKE HIS RAISE COMING THIS SUMMER. ALSO, HE IS PROPOSING A TAX INCREASE. AND, ALSO LAST NIGHT, THE COUNCIL DIRECTED THE CITY MANAGER TO GET THE WHEELS IN MOTION FOR A $2-MILLIN DOLLAR BOND ISSUE ELECTION IN MARCH TO EXPAND THE FIRE STATION. THE BOND WOULD INCREASE TAXES ABOUT $1.00 PER $1,000 ASSESSED VALUATION. IT WOULD HAVE TO PASS BY 60%.

LOTS OF "THE FLU" AROUND THESE DAYS AND FLU SHOTS ARE BEING URGED.

THE PEACE PIPE PLAYERS MUSICAL COMEDY "INTO THE WOODS" WAS WELL RECEIVED OVER THE WEEKEND. ABOUT 100 SAW EACH OF THE 3 PERFORMANCES. I SAW IT FRIDAY NIGHT. EXCELLENT JOB BY THE CAST.
LITTLE LONG. FINAL TWO PERFORMANCES ARE THIS COMING FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT.

ALSO SAW "DREAM GIRLS" AT MY THEATRE YESTERDAY. VERY GOOD.

FIVE PEOPLE AT MAQUOKETA BUSINESSES WERE TICKETED AFTER THEY ALLEGEDLY SOLD TOBACCO TO AN UNDERAGE TEEN DURING A CHECK BY MAQUOKETA POLICE. AN UNDERAGE MALE FROM ANOTHER CITY WAS USED BY POLICE TO GO INTO MAQUOKETA ESTABLISHMENTS TO TRY TO BUY CIGARETTES. OFFICERS SAID NONE OF THE EMPLOYEES TICKETED
ASKED THE YOUTH HIS AGE. BUT, ALL ASKED TO HIS HIS IDENTIFICATION WHICH LISTED HIS AGE AS UNDER 18. CHARGED WITH SELLING TOBACCO TO A MINOR: KATHLEEN ADAM, 39, MAQUOKETA....

HEARD TODAY THAT THEISEN'S HOPES TO BE INTO THEIR LARGER STORE
(FORMER WAL MART) ON HIGHWAY 64 WEST, BY MAY, MAYBE SOONER.
AND HEARD THERE IS AN INTEREST BEING SHOWN ON THE FORMER JACK AND JILL BUILDING.

YES, BANKER DAVE JOHNSON IS STILL WORKING A COUPLE DAYS A WEEK

THE PRESIDENT'S AWARD WENT TO THE MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC UTILITY BOARD AND EMPLOYEES FOR ALL THE WORK THEY DO FOR THE CHAMBER, ESPECIALLY AT CHRISTMAS TIME. MCCOLLEY, A NATIVE OF MAQUOKETA, AND HER HUSBAND ARE MAKING PLANS TO MOVE BACK TO MAQUOKETA, FROM DUBUQUE.

AT THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MEETING TODAY, TREASURER AL TEBBE,JR. ASKED THAT BOB MOTTET BE APPOINTED TO REPLACE BARB WRIGHT ON THE COUNTY COMPENSATION BOARD. THEISEN'S WILL MOVE INTO THE OLD STORE THIS SUMMER AND FOR THEISEN'S, THE MOVE WILL ALSO BE TO A FACILITY TWICE AS BIG AS THE CURRENT BUILDING.

BOTH RETIRED A COUPLE YEARS GO, CHECKED OUT THE VILLAGES AND MOVED THERE IN AUGUST OF 2005. DEAN WAS WITH A NATIONWIDE CORPORATE COOKBOOK COMPANY IN SALES FOR MANY YEARS AND STILL
WORKS A FEW DAYS A MONTH FOR THEM, AT THEIR HEADQUARTERS IN
NASHVILLE. THE VILLAGES (THAT'S NAME OF CITY, THE VILLAGES)
ARE LOCATED ABOUT 40 MILES NORTH OF ORLANDA, A PLANNED RETIREMENT CITY THAT HAS HAD TREMENDOUS GROWTH THE PAST 5 YEARS AND NOW HAS A POPULATION OF ABOUT 60,000 AND WILL GO TO 100,000 IN A FEW YEARS, AND THEN DEVELOPMENT WILL STOP.
NO ON UNDER 55 CAN LIVE THEIR .. 30 GOLF COURSES...THE COUNTY IS THE FASTED GROWING IN FLORIDA. FIRST CLASS PLACE FOR SENIORS.
MIGHT WANT TO CHECK OUT THEIR WEB SITE. IT WAS NEAR 80 EVERYDAY I WAS THERE, WHILE ICE AND SNOW WAS HAPPENING HERE. GOOD TIME TO BE GONE.

THE BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM DEFEATED DYERSVILLE BECKMAN FRIDAY NIGHT AND LAST NIGHT, HERE, BEAT MARION IN DOUBLE OVERTIME, 60 TO 57. MATT GERLACH WAS HIGH WITH 22 POINTS AND BRAD COOK GOT A 3-POINT BASKET IN THE LAST COUPLE SECONDS TO GIVE THE CARDS THE WIN. MEANWHILE, ALSO LAST N IGHT, THE GIRLS LOST AT MARION BY A FEW POINTS. LAST FRIDAY NIGHT THEY LOST TO DYERSVILLE 42 TO 40. THEY HAVE BEEN HAVING SOME BAD LUCK, LOOSING BY CLOSE MARGINS AND ARE NOW 3 AND 8 IN THE WAMAC.

A 13-YEAR OLD TEENAGER WAS BEEN CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH A THREATENING GRAFFITI FOUND AT THE HIGH SCHOOL IN DEWITT BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

A SABULA MAN HAS ASKED THE JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVISORS TO AGAIN PUT ON THREE MUSIC AND MOTORCYCLE RALLIES THIS SUMMER.
LAST YEAR, THE MAN PUT ON 2 OR 3 AND THEY WERE NOT POPULAR WITH
SOME OF THE RESIDENTS IN THE AREA, SO THE SUPERVISORS WILL TALK IT OVER IN A WORK SESSION JANUARY 30TH.

HERE AT KMAQ, WE GOT RADIO BINGO UNDERWAY MONDAY AND HAVE A LOT TO DO GETTING READY FOR THE 10TH ANNUAL FARM AND HOME SHOW IN EARLY FEBRUARY.

MY DAUGHTER, LONNA, GOT A FIRST-LOOK AT THE NEW WAL MART STORE THIS WEEK, THE SUPER WAL MART THEY CALL IT....AND SAID ITS NICE...AND BIG. SHE WORKS FOR MAQUOKETA STATE BANK, AND THEY WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE THE ATM MACHINE FOR THE STORE. RIBBON CUTTING CERMONY IS THIS FRIDAY NIGHT, AND THE NEW STORE OPENS EARLY SATURDAY MORNING. IT WILL HAVE A FULL GROCERY STORE AND WILL , WITH NEW EMPLOYEES, HAVE A TOTAL WORKFORCE OF WELL OVER 200. AND OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY (OLD STORE CLOSES AT 10P.M) AND IS ABOUT TWICE THE SIZE OF THE OLD STORE. KMAQ WILL BE DOING REMOTE BROADCASTS FROM THE NEW STORE SATURDAY MORNING.
THEISEN'S (FARM STORE) WILL MOVE TO THE OLD BUILDING, BUT NOT FOR A FEW MONTHS. THEY ARE NOW ON EAST PLATT.

BACK TO THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA. SUNDAY, WE WENT TO THE HOPE LUTHERAN CHURCH THERE. LARGE BEAUTIFUL CHURCH. TALKED TO A MEMBER AND 5 YEARS AGO, IT HAD 150 MEMBERS AND NOW HAS 12-HUNDRED. FIVE WEEKEND SERVICES, TWO PASTORS, A FULLTIME MUSIC DIRECTOR AND (I HOPE PASTOR GJERDE READS THIS) THE SERMON WAS 8 MINUTES LONG AND THE 8 A.M. SERVICE GOT OUT AT 8:46 A.M.

OH YES....I WAS INTERVIEWED BRIEFLY ON THEIR RADIO STATION (PLAYS 40'S AND 50'S MUSIC 24 HOURS A DAY) AND OF COURSE, THE FIRST THING I HAD TO DO WAS TELL THE ANNOUNCER HOW TO PRONOUNCE MAQUOKETA.

THE MAQUOKETA BOYS LOST HERE AT HOME LAST NIGHT TO INDEPENDENCE, 67 TO 57. THEIR RECORD NOW 3 AND 6.
THE GIRLS WON AT INDEPENDENCE LAST NIGHT, 43 TO 33 AND THEIR RECORD N OW IS 4 AND 7.

THE WRESTLERS WRESTLE AT WATERLOO COLUMBUS TOMORROW NIGHT.

ADAM HEPKER, A JUNIOR AT MID AMERICA NAZARENE, HAS BEEN SELECTED HEART OF AMERICA ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK. HE IS A POINT GUARD AND AVERAGED 25 POINTS A GAME IN TWO GAMES THIS PAST WEEK. HE WAS A GUARD FOR MCHS AND HIS COACH IS ROCKY LAMAAR, ALSO FORMER MCHS PLAYER. HIS PARENTS ARE CINDY AND LEIGHTON OF MAQUOKETA AND THE COLLEGE IS JUST OVER THE BORDER FROM KANSAS CITY. THE TEAM RECORD IS 13 AND 0 AND IS RANKED #1 IN THE COUNTRY IN DIVISION 2A.

THE SALES TAX COUNTY WIDE ELECTION YESTERDAY PASSED BY OVER 75 PERCENT.....1,129 YES AND 319 NO. THE VOTE EXTENDS THE 1% OPTION SALES TAX REVENUE TO 2022. THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN JACKSON COUNTY PUSHED FOR THIS ISSUE AS THEY DEPEND A LOT ON THAT REVENUE.

MID AMERICA NAZARINE, COACHED BY ROCKY LAMAAR AND BILL FLEMMING, WON ANOTHER BIG GAME SATURDAY NIGHT AT OLATHE, KANSAS TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED, 13 TO 0. MCHS GRAD ADAM HEPKER WAS LEADING SCORER, WITH 29 POINTS.

ALL 5 SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN JACKSON COUNTY CALLED FOR THE ELECTION AND HAVE PROMOTED A "YES" VOTE.
THE MONEY CAN BE USED FOR BUILDINGS, BUILDING MAINTENANCE,
SCHOOL BUSES.....BUT CAN NOT BE USED FOR SALARIES. IN MAQUOKETA, PASSAGE OF THE ELECTION TOMORROW WILL LET THE SCHOOL DISTRICT GO AHEAD WITH PLANS FOR A NEW GYM AND CAFETERIA. I WOULD GUESS THE ISSUE WILL PASS.

WE HIT 51 TODAY AND TIED THE RECORD HIGH FOR THIS DATE.
BUT COLDER WEATHER IS COMING THIS WEEKEND.

THE MAQUOKETA WRESTLERS BEAT VINTON-SHELLSBURG LAST NIGHT AND ALSO LOST TO WESTERN DUBUQUE, IN A DOUBLE-DUAL HERE IN TOWN. THE PROBLEM FOR MAQUKETA IS NOW WRESTLERS AT THE HEAVY WEIGHTS AND THEREFORE WE HAVE TO FORFEIT.

THE BASKETBALL TEAMS PLAY WATERLOO COLUMBUS TONIGHT...THE GIRLS HERE.

MARK BECK WAS RE-ELECTED CHIEF OF THE MAQUOKETA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT FOR 2007, THE LONE CANDIDATE FOR THE JOB.
HE WILL BEGIN HIS 10TH YEAR AS CHIEF AND 24TH ON THE DEPARTMENT.
HE SAID HE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE CHIEF TO SEE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXPANSION THIS YEAR AND POSSIBLY THROUGH THE STATE CONVENTION IN 2008, HERE IN MAQUOKETA. ALSO AT THE DEPARTMENT MEETING, JERRY WEIS, A 32-YEAR VETERAN OF THE DEPARTMENT, ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT.

MAQUOKETA FIREMEN PUT OUT A CHIMNEY FIRE ON SOUTH MAIN THIS MORNING, AT THE HEINRICH CHIROPRACTIC OFFICE. THE FIRE WAS CONTAINED IN THE CHIMNEY AND SOME SMOKE DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING. YEARS AGO, THAT BUILDING WAS THE HEPKER CHIROPRACTIC BUILDING.

BOB SCHWAGER, 60, OF RURAL MAQUOKETA DIED YESTERDAY.

THE CITY LIGHT PLANT CREWS TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE WEATHER TO TAKE DOWN THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS DOWNTOWN.

AT THE SUPERVIORS MEETING YESTERDAY, STEVE FLYNN WAS SWORN-IN AS NEW MEMBER OF THE COUNTY BOARD AND LARRY KOOS WAS NAMED CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD FOR 2007.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL LAST NIGHT VOTED TO HAVE THE SCOTT COUNTY YMCA MANAGE THE NEW ARC FACILITY IN MAQUOKETA, THAT WILL INCLUDE A NEW INDOOR SWIMMING POOL. ABOUT 50 ARC BACKERS ATTENDED THE MEETING TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR THE YMCA AND ALL CHEERED WITH THE 6 TO 1 VOTE. VOTING AGAINST THE PROPOSAL WAS COUNCILMAN GALEN SAUNDERS.

MAQUOKETA FIREMEN WERE CALLED TO A CAR FIRE WEST OF MAQUOKETA THIS MORNING, ON HIGHWAY 64. A CAR OWNED BY LYNETTE PITHAN OF LOST NATION WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES WHEN FIREMEN ARRIVED AND THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS.
