CLOUDY AND COOL TODAY....NO RAIN....YET.

SLOW NEWS DAYS.

DEATH: DONNA MYERS, 80, OF MAQUOKETA DIED YESTERDAY AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL. SURVIVED BY HER HUSBAND, HAL, FORMER MAQUOKETA BUSINESSMAN AND FIVE CHILDREN. COMPLETE OBITUARY AT www.laheys.com

THE MAQUOKETA FIRE DEPARTMENT IS ASKING THE CITY TO OFFER A SECURITY PROGRAM FOR BUSINESSES.
IT'S CALLED THE KNOX BOX SYSTEM. IT'S A BOX WHICH HAS KEYS INSIDE WHICH CAN BE ACCESSED BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT QUICKLY IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.
THE SYSTEM WOULD BE SET UP SO ONLY THE MAQUOKETA LAW CENTER COULD RELEASE THE BOX WITH KEYS INSIDE. THE BUSINESS WOULD PAY FOR THE BOX AND KEYS IF THEY WANT INTO THE SYSTEM.
THE IDEA MAY BE TALKED ABOUT AT THE NEXT REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING.

I WILL POST LEIGHTON HEPKER'S RECAP OF THE FOOTBALL GAME HERE SOMETIME SATURDAY MORNING. YOU WILL HAVE TO CLICK-ON THE
AUDIO BUTTON.

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.

SUNNY AND COOL TODAY....UPPER 50'S.

I DID HAVE A REPORT YESTERDAY! DID YOU NOTICE?
IT WAS AN "AUDIO" ONLY! FOUND OUT THE NEW PHONE NUMBER TO CALL TO MAKE AUDIO-ONLY REPORTS AND IT WORKED FINE, SO FROM NOW ON, I WILL
OCCASSIONALLY DO AUDIO INSTEAD OF WRITTEN DAILY REPORTS. THE NICE THINGS ABOUT AN AUDIO REPORT: A/ I CAN DO THEM FASTER AND B/ I CAN DO THEM FROM ANYWHERE, INCLUDING IN MY CAR OR AT HOME. NO COMPUTER IS NEEDED. BUT, YOU HAVE TO NOTICE THE SMALL INDICATION THAT THE REPORT IS AN AUDIO ONE...AND THEN YOU HAVE TO CLICK ON TO IT AND BRING IT UP TO LISTEN. SO, WHEN YOU DON'T SEE A REGULAR WRITTEN REPORT FOR THE CURRENT DAY, CHECK TO MAKE SURE THERE IS NOT AN AUDIO ONE INSTEAD.

AND...HOPE YOU LIKE THE PHOTOS. NOW, IT WILL BE A LOT EASIER TO PUT PICTURES UP FOR YOU TO LOOK AT. SO, WATCH FOR MORE. OF COURSE, NOW I WILL HAVE TO START TAKING MORE PHOTOS. I CARRY A LITTLE DIGITAL CAMERA WITH ME MOST OF THE TIME.

DO YOU WANT THE WEB CAM ON MAIN STREET BACK? LET ME KNOW
BY EMAILING ME AT kmaq@kmaq.com

A PRELIMINARY FINDING IN THE TRAFFIC STUDY ON WEST PLATT SHOWS THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS AT THE ON-OFF RAMPS AT THE 61/64 INTERSECTION ARE NOT NECESSARY. BUT, THE INTERSECTION AT WESTGATE AND PLATT STREETS COULD USE A TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE STUDY SUGGESTS REMOVING THE SIGNALS AT THE RAMPS AND USING PLAIN STOP SIGNS ONLY. THE SIGNALS COULD BE MOVED TO PLATT AND WESTGATE DRIVE. BUT, TO MAKE THIS CHANGE, THE COST WILL
STILL BE AROUND $70,000. AND WHO WILL PAY THE PRICE? THE CITY OR THE STATE? MORE ON THIS STILL TO COME. I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED.

YOU STILL HAVE 2 WEEKS TO BUY A $20 CHANCE TO WIN THE NEW TRUCK RAFFLE SPONSORED BY THE MAQUOKETA ATHLETIC BOOSTERS. THE DRAWING WILL BE THE NIGHT OF THE MAQUOKETA HOMECOMING GAME. ODDS OR GOOD.
AND FOR A GOOD CAUSE. WE ARE SELLING THEM HERE AT KMAQ AND IF YOU WANT A CHANCE TO WIN, SEND $20 CHECK TO: MAQUOKETA ATHLETIC BOOSTERS, %KMAQ, BOX 940, MAQUOKETA, IOWA 52060. I'LL ACKNOWLEDGE EVERYONE THAT BUYS A TICKET ON THIS REPORT. ESPECIALLY IF YOU WERE A FORMER MCHS ATHLETE, YOU SHOULD PUT THE CHECK IN THE MAIL TOMORROW.

THE HOMECOMING QUEEN CANDIDATES ARE JESSICA BRUCK, DANIELLE DIETZ,
CHELSI HEISER, EMILY MELVOLD, DEE NUGENT, KELLY SCHUSTER, KELSEY SCOTT AND LAURA SPALDING. KING CANDIDATES ARE JOHNNY BIEHL, DANNY CAVEN,

I'M A LOT HAPPIER TODAY THAN YETERDAY. THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS FINIALLY WON A GAME LAST NIGHT.

A MAQUOKETA NATIVEE, DONALD SIEGEL, AGE 77, DIED YESTERDAY AT AN OELWEIN HOSPITAL AFTER A BRIEF ILLNESS. HE FARM NEAR ANDREW AND WORKED FOR LAMBORN CONSTRUCTION AT ONE TIME IN MAQUOKETA. SURVIVORS INCLUDE A DAUGHTER IN OELWIN AND A SON THERE ALSO.

THEY ARE STARTING TO PAVE THE WAL MART PARKING LOT.

JERRY RASMUSSEN IS WRITING ANOTHER BOOK ABOUT WELL KNOWN CITIZENS OF MAQUOKETA THAT ARE NO LONGER LIVING. IT WILL BE DONE SOON.

THE DEMOCRATIC HEADQUARTERS ARE OPEN IN MAQUOKETA, IN THE OLD MANN'S JEWELRY STORE, NEAR THE CORNER OF MAIN AND PLATT STREETS.

I WANTED NEW MULTI-COLOR LIGHTS FOR CHRISTMAS IN DOWNTOWN THIS CHRISTMAS. JUST FOR A CHANGE FOR A YEAR. A POLL WAS TAKEN.
SHUCKS. THE VOTE WAS TO GO FOR ALL WHITE AGAIN. THESE DAYS, YOU CAN'T BE OLD FASHIONED. THE MUNICIPAL LIGHT EMPLOYEES WILL PUT THEM UP AGAIN THIS NOVEMBER.

SORRY FOR THE LONG REPORT.

THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF '56 IS HAVING THEIR 50TH REUNION TOMORROW NIGHT AT THE EAGLES CLUB IN MAQUOKETA.
SOME OF THE CLASS MEMBERS ATTENDED DINNER LAST NIGHT AT THE DECKER HOTEL, WITH SOME SPECIAL GUESTS, INCLUDING DR. BROMAN
AND THEIR HEAD BASKETBALL COACH, JERRY CARPENTER, AND MUSIC TEACHER JANICE FARNUM. JERRY CARPENTER, WHO REGULARLY READS THIS REPORT, STOPPED IN THIS MORNING AND WE HAD A GOOD TALK ABOUT THE 50'S IN MAQUOKETA.
HIS FIRST CHILD WAS DELIVERED BY DR. BROMAN. HE NOW LIVES IN
ROMANO, CALIFORNIA, IN THE MOUNTAINS. HIS FIRST TEACHING JOB WAS HERE IN MAQUOKETA IN 1951 AND HE STAYED HERE FOR 5 YEARS, AS HISTORY TEACHER AND COACH. FOR 5 SUMMERS, HE ALSO RAN THE MAQUOKETA SWIMMING POOL AND LOLA LUBBEN AND KAREN SPECHT

JERRY FULLER ASSISTED IN COACHING TRACK, AND FOOTBALL AND THE LAST TWO YEARS HE WAS IN MAQUOKETA, HE WAS THE HEAD BASKETBALL COACH. TO SUM IT UP, HE HAS FOND MEMORIES OF MAQUOKETA AND ENJOYS VISITS HERE. HE AND HIS WIFE ARE ENJOYING THIS ONE TOO. PRETTY SURE HE SAID HE HAS 3 CHILDREN AND ALL LIVE IN THE MIDWEST.

JERRY CARPENTER ALSO TOLD ME THAT AT BEVERLY HILLS HIGH SCHOOL WHERE HE TAUGHT FOR 25 YEARS, HE HAD STUDENTS WHO WENT ON TO BE FAMOUS MOVIE STARS, INCLUDING RICHARD DREYFUS AND NICHOLAS CAGE.

AND...WHEN IN MAQUOKET, CARPENTER WAS A MEMBER OF THE MAQUOKETA LIONS CLUB. IN IN 1953 (NOT SURE THAT WAS THE EXACT YEAR) HE AND 3 OTHER MEMBERS OF CLUB HAD A BARBERSHOP QUARTET AND THEY (UNDER DIRECTION OF JANICE FARNUM) ENTERED THE
LION'S BARBERSHOP CONTEST AT THE LIONS INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION THAT YEAR IN CHICAGO. AND, THEY TOOK 2ND PLACE.
BUT, TAKING FIRST PLACE WAS "THE BUFFALO BILLS", THAT LATER WENT ON TO BE FAMOUS WORLD-WIDE, AND ONE OF THE BEST-EVER BARBERSHOP QUARTETS IN THE WORLD. IN ADDITION TO JERRY, VIC STEAD(NOW DECEASED) WAS ONE OF THE FOUR. BUT HE (AND JANICE EITHER) CAN RECALL WHO THE OTHER TWO WERE. ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW?

BEAUTIFUL DAY...HIGH OF 62.

HOSPICE OF JACKSON COUNTY HAS EXPRESSED INTEREST IN USING THE ANDREW JACKSON CARE FACILITY NEAR ANDREW. THIS WAS LEARNED THIS MORNING AT THE JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVIORS MEETING.
THE SUPERVISORS WILL HAVE A WORK SESSION WITH THE HOSPICE BOARD NEXT MONDAY MORNING, AT 8:30. AN ARCHITECT WITH DURANT IN DUBUQUE WAS AT THE SUPERVIORS MEETING THIS MORNING AND IN A LETTER TO LISA MELLOY OF HOSPICE, HE SAID IT WOULD COST UP TO $250,000 FOR IMPROVEMENTS FOR THE FACILITY BEFORE IT COULD BE USED. FOR ONE THING, ROOMS NOW DO NOT HAVE A TOILET AND THERE WOULD NEED TO BE ONE IN EACH ROOM. AND TO MEET VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS, TEMPERED OUTDOOR AIR WOULD NEED TO BE ADDED TO EACH ROOM. THE SUPERVIORS WILL LEARN MORE ABOUT THE IDEA MONDAY MORNING. IF IT CAME TO BE, IT WOULD CERTAINLY BE A LARGE HOSPICE FACILITY. THE SUPERVIORS HAVE THE VACANT BUILDING FOR SALE. IT HAS NOT BEEN USED SINCE THE CARE FACILITY CLOSED LAST YEAR.
