A REUNION WAS HELD THIS MORNING AT THE LOCAL HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM AT THE FAIRGROUNDS. IT HONORED FORMER MEMBERS OF THE MAQUOKETA BEARS TOWN BASEBALL TEAM. IT WAS FORMED 60 YEARS AGO IN 1946 AND PLAYED SUMMER BALL THROUGH 1961. 12 PLAYERS AND THEIR BAT BOY WERE ON HAND THIS MORNING TO SHARE MEMORIES AND STORIES. THE PLAYERS WERE WAYNE DANIELS, CLARENCE HINKE, NORM HINKE, BUD MYATT, JIM RANKIN, EDDIE ORTELL, JIM KINRAIDE, LARRY SPECHT, RON YOEGER, HAVEN SCHMIDT, DUB ROMER, AND BAT BOY JOE ROLLINGER. LONGTIME MAQUOKETA SENTINEL SPORTS WRITER JACK MARLOWE AND KMAQ'S LEIGHTON HEPKER HELPED MODERATE THE EVENT. THE ONE-HOUR PLUS PROGRAM WAS RECORDED BY THE LOCAL ACCESS CHANNELL AND WILL BE AIRED FREQUENTLY OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. SEVERAL FAMILY MEMBERS AND INTERESTED RESIDENTS ATTENDED THE REUNION.
BONNIE MITCHELL AND MARCELLA HENEKE FROM THE MUSEUM HAVE PUT TOGETHER A MAQUOKETA BEARS DISPLAY AT THE MUSEUM WHICH WILL REMAIN UP FOR A FEW WEEKS. REFRESHMENTS AND MORE STORIES WERE SHARED FOLLOWING THE FORMAL PROGRAM.
THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS WILL BE REVIEWING A NEW ORDINANCE NEXT WEEK WHICH WILL REQUIRE LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS IN THE CITY. THE PROPOSAL CALLS FOR ALL DOGS AND CATS OVER 6 MONTHS OLD TO BE LICENSED BY OCT. 1ST. EACH YEAR, THE LICENSE REQUIRES ALL ANIMALS TO HAVE THE PROPER SHOTS. THE ANIMALS WILL WEAR A TAG ALL THE TIME. A PHOTO OF THE ANIMAL WILL BE REQUIRED AT THE TIME OF LICENSING. THERE WILL BE NO FEE.
JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF DEPUTY BILL DEPPE PLANS TO TAKE EARLY RETIREMENT AT THE END OF THE YEAR. HE HAS BEEN A DEPUTY FOR 31 YEARS. THE SHERIFF TOLD SUPERVORS HE PLANS TO MOVE UP BRENDAN BECK TO FULL TIME DEPUTY NEXT JANUARY TO REPLACE DEPPE.
BECK IS A FULL TIME JAILER AND PART TIME DEPUTY NOW.
