NO SUNSHINE TODAY...NO RAIN EITHER...AND A HIGH OF 73. BUT, RAIN IS IN THE FORECAST FOR THE NEXT 4 DAYS.

TOMORROW IS CITY-WIDE GARAGE SALE DAY IN MAQUOKETA....AROUND 79 GARAGE SALES AROUND TOWN.

WE HAVE TAKEN DOWN THE KMAQ GUEST BOOK AND WILL TRY AND REPLACE IT WITH A DIFFERENT KIND AND HOPE THE SPAMERS WILL NOT FIND IT. ALSO, I WAS TOLD TODAY VIA EMAIL THAT A LINK FROM THE KMAQ WEB SITE HAS SOME BAD STUFF ON IT. GLAD THAT PERSON LET ME KNOW. AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, WE WILL DELETE IT. THERE IS A LOT THAT MAKES UP THE KMAQ WEB SITE AND WE DON'T CHECK IT OVER ON ANY REGULAR BASIS, SO WHEN SOMETHING BAD APPEARS, PLEASE EMAIL US AND WE WILL DELETE IT. UNFORTUNATELY, THE INTERNET HAS MILLIONS OF TERRIBLE ENTRIES ....AND THAT WILL NEVER CHANGE.
I JUST IGNORE IT...AND OTHERS NEED TO DO THE SAME. LAST I READ, THERE ARE AN ESTIMATED 3 MILLION PORN SITES ON THE INTERNET WORLD WIDE WEB.

SWIMMING LESSONS SIGN-UP AT THE MAQUOKETA POOL WILL BE ON MAY 5TH AND 6TH AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER, NEXT TO THE POOL.

GRADING FOR THE NEW WAL MART SUPER CENTER STARTED THIS WEEK.
LOTS OF DIRT TO MOVE BY THE BIG EQUIPMENT. IT WILL BE LOCATED AT THE END OF SOUTH MAIN STREET, ON THE EAST SIDE, ACROSS FROM THE NEW TRUCK STOP AND EAST OF THE COMFORT INN MOTEL.

A NEW HOME STARTED GOING UP THIS WEEK AT THE NEW PRAIRIE CREEK GOLF COURSE SUB-DIVISION AT THE SOUTH EDGE OF MAQUOKETA.
THAT SUB-DIVISION IS FILLING UP QUICKLY.

THE JACK AND JILL STORE SIGN IS DOWN, THE STORE IS EMPTY AND IT SURE SEEMS STRANGE TO SEE NO ACTIVITY IN THE BUILDING AND PARKING LOT AFTER ALL THE YEARS. STILL A FOR-SALE SIGN ON THE BUILDING. THE OUTSIDE BRAT STAND WAS PURCHASED BY KJ'S CONVENIENCE STORE NEXT DOOR AND WILL BE IN OPERATION SOON KJ'S.

FAMOUS COUNTRY SINGER BILLY DEAN (MARRIED A MAQUOKETA GIRL LAST SUMMER) WAS IN JACKSON COUNTY EARLIER THIS MONTH AND WENT WILD TURKEY HUNTING..AND SHOT A TURKEY. HE WILL BE BACK IN JACKSON COUNTY TO DO AN OUTDOOR CONCERT IN BELLEVUE IN JUNE, NEXT TO THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. MORE ON THAT LATER. HE ALSO HAS A NEW SONG OUT THESE DAYS CALLED "SWINGING FOR THE FENCE", A SONG ABOUT BASEBALL AND A GOOD ONE.

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.

ABOUT 2/10 OF AN INCH OF RAIN THIS MORNING...AND TODAY, CLOUDY AND COOL, BUT, ACCORDING TO THE EXPERTS, WILL BE WARMING UP AND NICE AGAIN TOMORROW.

TIME AGAIN FOR THE UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES. THE MONTH GOES BY QUICKLY. IN JACKSON COUNTY, THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DROPPED TO 5.8 PERCENT IN MARCH, FROM 7 PERCENT IN FEBRUARY. IN IOWA, THE STATE AS A WHOLE REPORTED THE LOWEST FIGURE IN ALMOST 4 YEARS, AT 3.8 PERCENT, DOWN FROM 4.4 IN FEBRUARY . AND THE U.S. RATE IN MARCH WAS DOWN TO 4.7, DOWN FROM 4.8 IN FEBRUARY AND DOWN FROM 5.1 A YEAR AGO.

BELLEVUE VOTERS ARE GOING TO THE POLLS TODAY TO VOTE ON A NEW OUTDOOR POOL, WITH AN ESTIMATED COST OF $3-MILLION. IT NEEDS 60 PERCENT APPROVAL. TWO YEARS AGO, VOTERS DEFEATED A $2-MILLION POOL.

THE MAQUOKETA IKE'S CLUB IS DOING A CLEAN-UP, FIX-UP PROJECT
AT LAKEHURST DAM ON THE MAQUOKETA RIVER. GOOD PROJECT.
BETTER PARKING LOT AND BETTER SHORE FISHING ON THE RIVER WILL BE THE END RESULT. MAYBE I MENTIONED THIS IN AN EARLIER REPORT.

SCHMIDT CONSTRUCTION (DALE SCHMIDT, OWNER) IS DOING SOME NEEDED REPAIRS TO THE MARQUE OF MY THEATRE. IT WAS BUILDT IN
1973 AND AFTER 33 YEARS, THANKS TO A ROOF LEAK NOW AND THEN, SOME AREAS WERE ROTTED OUT AND NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. IT WILL THEN BE COVERED WITH AN ALUMINUM COVERING AND SHOULD LAST ANOTHER 33 YEARS. PLAN ALSO TO REPLACE SOME STONE PANELS ON THE THEATRE FRONT AND GET SOME NEW SEATS IN ONE OF THE AUDITORIUMS. THE THEATRE OPENED IN MARCH OF 1973, THE 2ND
AUDITORIUM IN THE WINTER OF 1975 AND THE 3RD AUDITORIUM IN
1981. JACK JONES HAS BEEN MY MANAGER SINCE 1974. THE "TITANTIC"
IS THE BIGGEST MOVIE WE EVER RAN, LASTING 17 WEEKS. IN THE EARLY
YEARS, TWO OF THE BIGGEST WERE "JAWS" AND "POSEIDON ADVENTURE".
THIS SUMMER, THERE WILL BE A NEW "POSEIDON" THAT IS EXPECTED
TO BE ONE OF MANY HITS THIS SUMMER. THE DRIVE-IN IS OFF TO A GOOD START. WEATHER WAS PERFECT LAST WEEKEND AND WE HAD A GOOD TURNOUT BOTH FRIDAY AND SATURDAY. ONLY OPEN THOSE TWO NIGHTS UNTIL JUNE. BEEN TO A MOVIE LATELY? DO IT...YOU'LL HAVE FUN AND BRING BACK MEMORIES.

WILLEY REMAINS IN THE JACKSON COUNTY JAIL IN MAQUOKETA.

ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL DAY IN MAQUOKETA....SUNNY, LIGHT WIND, AND A HIGH OF 70.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL DID NOT AWARD A CONTRACT MONDAY NIGHT TO BUILD THE ARK. THE ITEM WAS PULLED FROM THE AGENDA.
THE CITY ATTORNEY, MARK LAWSON, SAID AFTER THE MEETING THAT IT WAS PREMATURE TO ACCEPT THE BID. AT ISSUE, THE LOW BID FROM HILLEBRAND CONSTRUCTION OF DAVENPORT. THEY WANT OUT OF BID
BECAUSE THEY MADE AN ERROR IN CALCULATIONS. THE 2ND LOWEST BIDDER (ABOUT $50,000 LOWER) IS BY EPIC CONSTRUCTION OF DUBUQUE.
COUNCIL MEMBERS HAD A WORK SESSION ON THE ARC BIDS LAST WEEK AND THEY MAY ASSESS HILLEBRAND PART OF THE $300,000 BID BOND.
DURING THE WORK SESSION LAST WEEK, ARC MEMBERS SAY THEY'VE RAISED 4.85 MILLION, WHICH INCLUDES CASH ON HAND, PLEDGES, THE CITY'S DONATIONS, THE CAT GRANT, AND THE MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC UTILITY'S DONATION. ESTIMATED CONSTRUCTION COST IS ABOUT 4-MILLION WITH ANOTHER 700-THOUSAND IN ARCHITECTS FEES AND OTHER COSTS FOR A TOTAL ESTIMATED COST OF $4,714,601. AND THERE WILL BE ANOTHER $150,000 IN FURNISHINGS AND EQUIPMENT.
AND THERE IS TALK TO ADD TWO MORE LANES FOR THE SWIMMING POOL, AT AN ESTIMATED COST OF $600,000 MORE. SO, IN THAT CASE, THE OVERALL COST WOULD OVER 5-MILLION. THE ARC IS ESTIMATED TO BE COMPLETED NEXT YEAR. I'VE HEARD ANTICIPATED MEMBERSHIP FIGURES OF 800 OR MORE MEMBERS , AT A MEMBERSHIP FEE OF AROUND $300 A YEAR .

THE MAQUOKETA BOYS GOLF TEAM TOOK FIRST PLACE AT THE SABER INVITATIONAL YESTERDAY AT DEWITT, IN A 7 TEAM FIELD.
