IF THIS PRINTING IS TOO BIG, LET ME KNOW!
NICE DAY TODAY...HIGH OF 84.
THE MAQUOKETA CARDINALS LOST THEIR OPENING FOOTBALL GAME OF THE SEASON LAST NIGHT TO ONE OF THE BEST TEAMS IN THE STATE, DECORAH....45 TO 10. I BELIEVE COACH MARK STARTED HIS 23RD SEASON LAST NIGHT. THE SOPHOMORES, AGAIN COACHED BY KEVIN BOWMAN, ALSO LOST.
LATE YESTERDAY, THE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TEAM FROM DAVENPORT CAME TO RURAL MAQUOKETA AND BAGGED UP SOME
MATERIAL AT THE FRANK RANDALL PROPERTY NEAR ROCKDALE ROAD, NORTH OF MAQUOKETA, AFTER A SPILL OF DDT INSECTICIDE WAS FOUND. FRANK FRIEBERG, JACKSON COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST, SAID A 500 ML BOTTLE OF DDT WAS SPILLED ON THE PROPERTY ON 200TH AVENUE. FRIEBERG SAID A BOY, WHOSE PARETNS RENT THE PROPERTY FROM RANDALL, FOUND THE BOTTLE ON THE GROUND WHERE A SHED USED TO BE ON THE PROPERTY. THE BOY PUT THE BOTTLE ON A FENCE POST AND USED A PELLET GUN TO SHOOT AT IT. THE BOTTLE BROKE AND THE CONTENTS SPILLED DOWN THE FENCE POST. IT HAS A VERY STRONG ODOR. THE BOY GOT SOME OF IT ON HIM BUT HIS MOTHER HELPED HIM WASH IT OFF AND THE MOTHER THEN CALLED FRIEBERG'S OFFICE. FIRE CHIEF MARK BECK WAS CALLED AND FRIEBERG AND BECK WENT TO THE SITE AND CONFIRMED IT WAS DDT AND THE HAZ MAT TEAM WAS CALLED. THE TEAM CUT THE FENCE POST IN PIECES, GATHERED UP THE BOTTLE FRAGMENTS AND DUG UP THE DIRT IN THE AREA WHICH WAS CONTAMINATED. THEY LEFT THE BAGS AT THE PROPERTY AND FRIEBERG SAID RANDALL WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR HIRING A COMERCIAL FIRM TO REMOVE THE MATERIAL. HE WILL BE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE A RECEIPT FROM A REPUTABLE COMPANY TO SHOW HE'S GOTTEN RID OF THE MATERIAL AS REQUIRED BY LAW.
THIS OCCURRED ON THE SAME PROPERTY THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT, REGARDING JUNK AND DEBRIS CLEAN-UP ON THE PROPERTY.
BETTY SCHMIDT, 75 OF DAVENPORT DIED TUESDAY. SHE WAS BORN IN MAQUOKETA TO GEORGE AND EDNA CLAREY KROLICK AND HAD 4 HUSBANDS. SURVIVORS INCLUDED 8 CHILDREN AND 16 GRANDCHILDREN AND TWO SISTERS, MAXINE GOLLADAY AND DORIS HOFF, BOTH OF MAQUOKETA.
ST. SENATOR ROGER STEWART AND WIFE JENNIE IS WITH OTHER LEGISLATORS ON A TRIP TO TAIWON.
HAVE A NICE WEEKEND!

88 again today....rain in forecast....
Big story today....Maquoketa Police Chief Brad Koranda said his officers along with immigration officials and an interpreter went to the Maquoketa Family Restaurant (formerly Sunrise) on South Main in Maquoketa yesterday afternoon and arrested three Mexican men who worked at the business, on allegations of sexual advances to other employees and holding them prisoner in a walk-in cooler. They had arrest warrants for four men, but onen of them had already fled.
All arrested listed their address as l06 East Apple Street. Koranda said police received three or four complaints fromj waitresses that the men would corner them when they went into the walk-in cooler. When the women has their hands full with boxes of food, the men would then fondle them, kiss them or make suggestive remarks. Documents show they would keep the women hold up in the cooler for up to 10 minutes. INS officials told the three men arrested that they should go back to Mexico because they are in the United State illegally.
Chief Koranda said the owner of the restaurant is not involved in the arrests and she lives in Chicago. All 3 are in jail and will appear in Magistrate Court. The Restaurant was not open today. Apparently, one of the four was the manager and the other 3 were kitchen help.
I had a sandwich there last week. Was pretty good.
All the time I have for now.
Take it easy.

AND AT THEIR HIGHWAY 61 LOCATION, THEY ARE REMOVING

1 AND 17/100 INCHS OF RAIN YESTERDAY. TODAY, NO RAIN...CLOUDY AND COOLER....HIGH IN MID 70'S.
THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS STILL HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING FRANK RANDALL TO GET HIS PROPERTY CLEANED-UP AT RURAL MAQUOKETA. THERE MAY NOW HAVE TO BE A LAWSUIT AS RANDALL DID NOT CLEAN UP THE AREA BY THE AUGUST 1ST DEADLINE. SUPERVISORS HAVE BEEN TOLD THERE ARE STILL JUNK VEHICLES AND DEBRIS ON THE PROPERTY ON ROCKDALE ROAD NORTH OF MAQUOKETA AND ANOTHER PROPERTY ON IRON BRIDGE ROAD HAS DEBRIS.
STEPHANIE LEPPERT, 19, OF MAQUOKETA HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL MISCHIEF IN THE 5TH DEGREE AND FINED K$162 ON CHARGES OF PUBLIC INTOXICATION. MAQUOKETA OFFICER DAN FURLONG SAID SHE WAS UPSET BECAUSE BEER HAD BEEN TAKEN FROM HER AT 11:58 P.M. LAST NIGHT AT THE DEPOT ON EAST PLATT STREET.
VOLUNTEERS ARE PAINTING THE WINDOW FRAMES THIS WEEK AT THE FORMER CLINTON ENGINES ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, SO THAT NEW WINDOW PANES CAN BE PUT IN NEXT WEEK.
HERMAN BARTEN, 69, OF MAQUOKETA, DIED YESTERDAY AT HIS HOME. HIS FULL OBITUARY IS AT www.laheys.com
THE 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE WAS EXACTLY 55 YEARS OLD YESTERDAY. I HAVE OWNED IT SINCE MARCH OF 1972. BOUGHT IT FROM THE LATE FAY MCKENSEY. ANOTHER DOUBLE FEATURE TONIGHT. A NEW TWO-SCREEN DRIVE-IN OPENED THIS SUMMER AT GALVA, ILLINOIS AND LAST WEEK, THE GALESBURG, ILLINOIS, DRIVE-IN WAS RE-OPENED AFTER BEING CLOSED FOR 20 YEARS.
SO, I NOW HAVE A LITTLE COMPETITION TO THE SOUTH, ABOUT 2 HOURS FROM HERE. THERE IS ALSO ONE IN MONROE, WISCONSIN AND DIXON, ILLINOIS. IN IOWA, JUST TWO OTHERS, IN NEWTON AND COUNCIL BLUFFS. THE 61 WAS OPENED IN 1950 BY RICHARD FRANKLIN (NOW LIVING IN DES MOINES AREA) AND
THE LATE WALT ALLEN. MCKINSEY BOUGHT IT AROUND 1960. HE SOLD IT IN THE LATE 60'S TO A GUY IN QUAD CITIES, BUT GOT IT BACK, AND THEN RAN IT A COUPLE MORE YEARS AND SOLD IT TO ME OVER A CUP OF COFFEE AT THE FAMOUS GREEN MILL RESTAURANT IN MAQUOKETA. TOM GOODALL WORKED FOR FAY A LOT OF YEARS AS THE PROJECTIONIST AND THEN A COUPLE YEARS FOR ME. HE IS A RETIRED TEACHER IN ELDRIDGE NOW.
HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND MY FRIENDS.

93 TODAY, 97 YESTERDAY AND HOT AND HUMID FORECAST FOR REST OF WEEK, WITH SLIGHT CHANCE OF RAIN.
MATT OSTERHAUS OF MAQUOKETA WOKE UP EARLY THIS MORNING TO FIND SOMONE IN HIS HOUSE.
HE HAD BEEN CALLED OUT OF BED BECAUSE THERE WAS AN ALARM AT OSTERHAUS PHARMACY AT 12:57 A.M. THIS MORNING. POLICE CHIEF BRAD KORANDA SAID IT APPEARS THE ALARM AT THE BUSINESS WAS NOT RELATED TO THE BREAK-IN AT THE HOUSE. MATT CAUGHT THE 16 YEAR OLD, BUT HE ESCAPED BEFORE POLICE ARRIVED. HE WAS CHARGED WITH TWO COUNTS OF BURGLARY IN THE 2ND DEGREE, PUBLIC INTOXICATION AND POSSESSION OF DRUG PARAPHENALIA. WHEN OFFICERS ARRESTED HIM, THEY FOUND ITEMS THAT DIDN'T BELONG TO HIM AND WHICH HE HAD TAKEN FROM NEARBY RESIDENTS. HE WAS TAKEN TO THE LAW CENTER,
AND JUVINILE PROBATION OFFICER BRIAN BOPES ASKED THAT HE BE RELEASED TO HIS MOTHER, MITZI MARTINEZ OF MAQUOKETA. BOPES SAID HE HAS FILED A PETITION THROUGH THE JACKSON COUNTY ATTORNEY'S OFFICE FOR JUVENILE COURT.
ALL FOR NOW...TAKE CARE AND HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

95 today. Tomorrow the same. But rain and cooler Thursday.
The Maquoketa Police Department is sponsoring a Night Out In the Park tonight at Little Bear Park.
Free burgers by the cattlemen and fun for the family. Part of a nation-wide event to promote police and commuity partnerships in the Fight Against Crime. This isn't the first year...but it IS for Maquoketa.
South 2nd Street is scheduled to be paved by the end of this week....as the big "Water Project" as they called it...nears completion.
Karen Meyer, 41, who worked at Walmart and Taco Johns, died Sunday at her home.
She is survived by her husband, Rick, in Prairie du Chien and 2 sons, including Chett Miracle of Maquoeketa.
Tracy Taylor and family of Milwaukee, moved to Phoenix area earlier this summer. Her parents are Pat and Joan Costello, owners of the Old Mill Art Gallery just East of Maquoketa.
Its football practice time in Maquoketa.
School registration is next Tuesday and Wednesday.
Next Monday night...first NFL game of season, will feature Miami and Sage Rosenfelts will probably play in the game. Its the Hall of Fame game at Canton, Ohio. Ran into his mother yesterday and she believes Sage will play in 2nd half.
Keep cool.
