HAPPY NEW YEAR!
IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN IOWA TODAY...SUNNY AND HIGH OF 41. RAIN AND SLEET IN FORECAST FOR TOMORROW.
AN ORDINANCE IS BEING DISCUSSED FOR EASTERN IOWA COUNTIES, INCLUDING JACKSON AND CLINTON, TO RESTRICT THE SALE OF PSEUDOPHEDRINE, WHICH IS A MAJOR INGREDIENT IN MAKING METHMPHETEAMINE. IT IS INCLUDED IN MANY COLD MEDICINES AND THE ORDINACE WOULD REQUIRE RETAILERS TO LIMIT THE SALE OF THE COLD MEDICINE DRUG TO BE SOLD FROM BEHIND THE COUNTER AT DRUG STORES AND RETAILERS WOULD ALSO BE LIMITED TO THE SALE OF TWO PACKAGES A DAY, PER PERSON AND A PHOTO ID WOULD ALSO BE REQUIRED.
ILLINOIS HAS ENACTED SIMILAR RESTRICTIONS AND JACKSON COUNTY ATTORNEY JOHN KIES SAID HE DOESN'T WANT JACKSON COUNTY TO BECOME THE HAVEN FOR DRUG MAKERS IF OTHER COUNTIES ARE MAKING RESTRICTIONS.
PUBLIC HEARINGS ARE PLANNED FOR JANUARY BEFORE A FINAL ORDINANCE IS PASSED.
FORMER MAQUOKETA AND IOWA STATE QUARTERBACK SAGE ROSENFELS IS
EXPECTED TO BE THE STARTING QUARTERBACK THIS SUNDAY FOR THE MIAMI DOLPHINS. EVERYONE IN IOWA IS EXCITED ABOUT THAT. HIS PARENTS LIVE JUST A SHORT DISTANCE NORTH OF MAQUOKETA. I'M SURE THEY'LL BE AT THE GAME
THIS SUNDAY, WHICH STARTS AT NOON.
AT THE SUPERVORS MEETING IN MAQUOKETA THIS WEEK, MIKE COTTON WAS RECOGNIZED FOR SERVING JACKSON COUNTY 29 YEARS IN THE AUDITOR'S OFFICE, MOST OF THOSE YEARS AS AUDITOR. HE WAS DEFEATED IN THE NOVEMBER ELECTION. HIS OFFICE STAFF PRESENTED HIM WITH HIS DESK CHAIR, WASTE BASKET AND LETTER HOLDER, ALONG WITH A POCKET WATCH. ALSO RECOGNIZED, WAS BUTCH WATTERS, WHO IS RETIRING AFTER 27 YEARS IN THE MAINTENACE DEPARTMENT AT THE COURTHOUSE.
D.L. STEVENS, AGE 87, OF MAQUOKETA DIED LAST NIGHT AT UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS. HE WAS A FARMER AND WAS A REGISTERED HEREFORD CATTLEMAN AND IN FACT, WAS A PAST-PRESIDENT OF THE IOWA HEREFORD ASSOCIATION.
HIS SURVIVORS INCLUDE SONS FRANK AND DAVID IN MAQUOKETA AND CLIFF IN DEWITT.
THE NEW GNOMAD COFFEE SHOP OPENED TODAY ON NORTH MAIN STREET IN MAQUOKETA, IN THE LOCATION THAT FOR MANY YEARS WAS BOB'S BARBER SHOP.
THE OWNERS ARE LUKE HALEY AND TONY SCHMIDT. THEY HAVE WORKED THE LAST TWO MONTHS GETTING THE BUILDING READY FOR BUSINESS. I AND JAKE BICKFORD TOOK OUR COFFEE BREAK THERE THIS AFTERNOON AND TOOK A QUICK TOUR. THE FRONT PART OF BUILDING IS WHERE THERE ARE SEVERAL TABLES AND CHAIRS FOR COFFEE (AND LATER SANDWICHS AND PASTRIES) E PATRONS TO SIT.
MIDWAY BACK, IS A COMPUTER ROOM WHERE ONE CAN ACCESS THE INTERNET AND DO SOME WEB SEEKING OR CHECKING OF EMAIL , AND AT THE REAR OF THE BUILDING, THERE I S A SMALL STAGE AREA WITH SOME RESTORED MOVIE THEATRE SEATS, WHERE "LIVE" MUSIC WILL BE ENJOYED. GOOD LUCK TO LUKE AND TONY.
JAKE AND I HAD REGULAR COFFEE, BUT MANY FLAVORS TO CHOOSE FROM.
HOPE 2004 WAS GOOD FOR YOU AND THAT 2005 WILL BE EVEN BETTER.
AGAIN..HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM NANCY AND I.... AND THE STAFF OF KMAQ
AND THE VOY THEATRES.

A BRIGHT AND SHINY DAY-AFTER CHRISTMAS....BEAUTIFUL DAY IN MAQUOKETA.
AND, WE HAVE A WHITE CHRISTMAS. SNOW FELL LATE CHRISTMAS EVE, SOME CHRISTMAS DAY, AND SOME LAST NIGHT...AND WE HAVE AROUND AN INCH OF SNOW ON THE GROUND TODAY. AND IT IS STARTING TO MELT ALREADY WITH THE TEMPERATURE IN THE 20'S AND THE SUN SHINING.
SNOW PLOWS WERE OUT, MOSTLY FOR SANDING INTERSECTIONS. I DID SOME SHOVELING AT KMAQ, HOME, AND GRANDMA MEYERS. LARRY MCCOY DOES THE
THEATRE. SPEAKING OF THEATRE....NANCY, I AND GRANDAUGHTER SARA WENT TO SEE "MEET THE FOCKERS" LAST NIGHT. HILARIOUS! YOU KNOW, I VERY SELDOM URGE YOU TO SEE A MOVIE, EVEN THOUGH MOVIES HAVE BEEN A BIG PART OF MY LIFE SINCE 1972. (RADIO SINCE 1958)...BUT, YOU MUST SEE THIS MOVIE!!!
IF YOU ARE READING THIS AND LIVE HERE AROUND MAQUOKETA, BE SURE TO DRIVE OUT ON HIGHWAY 64 EAST, JUST OUT A SHORT WAY, AND SEE THE BIG, FANTASTIC CHRISTMAS DISPLAY BY PAUL AND DIANE BRADY. I HAVE BEEN IN MAQUOKETA 46 YEARS, AND THIS IS THE FINEST DISPLAY MAQUOKETA HAS EVER HAD.
DAVE UPDEGRAFF OF DUBUQUE THIS PAST WEEK PASSED HIS CERTIFICATION TEST ADMINISTERED BY THE HUMAN RESOURCE INSTITUTE, AND HAS EARNED A SENIOR PROFESSIONAL HUMAN RESOURCE DESIGNATION. HE IS VICE-PRESIDENT AND CHIEF HUMAN RESOURCE OFFICER AT MAQUOKETA STATE BANK AND ALSO FOR ITS HOLDING COMPANY, OHNWARD BANCSHARES, INC. DAVE, MARRIED AND THE FATHER OF TWO CHILDREN, IS A PAST-PRESIDENT OF THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB AND IS CURRENTLY A BOARD MEMBER FOR THE SUNSHINE PRE-SCHOOL AND DAYCARE CENTER IN MAQUOKETA. HE HAS BEEN WITH MAQUOKETA STATE BANK ADN OHNWARD FOR ABOUT 6 YEARS. CONGRATULATIONS FELLOW ROTARIAN AND FRIEND, DAVE UPDEGRAPH. IT WAS QUITE A GRIND ... THE COURSE STARTED MONTHS AGO, INVOLVED MUCH NIGHT STUDY AT HOME AND CLASSES IN THE QUAD CITIES, CAPPED OFF WITH A NEARLY 5 HOUR EXAM THAT MANY FAIL THE FIRST TIME...BUT NOT DAVE. HE NOW WEARS A LAPEL PIN SIGNIFIER OF THE HIGHEST ACHIEVEMENT POSSIBLE IN THE HUMAN RESOURCES PROFESSION.
WANT TO COME BACK THIS SUMMER FOR THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR? OF COURSE YOU KNOW...
IT WILL BE BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER. THE DATES THIS YEAR: JULY 27-31, 05.
THE NEW COFFEE SHOP DOWNTOWN OPENS THIS WEEK. THE PAPER IS OFF THE FRONT WINDOW AND IT LOOKS VERY NICE INSIDE. MORE LATER.
ANOTHER NEW HOME IS GOING UP AT THE NEW GOLF COURSE AND IN FACT, THEY ARE WORKING ON IT TODAY. I HAVE MENTIONED BEFORE...MAQUOKETA HAS HAD AROUND 40 NEW HOME STARTS THIS YEAR.....A VERY GOOD NUNBER.
ATTENDED TWO CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICES FRIDAY NIGHT...7 PM AT THE METHODIST CHURCH (FIRST TIME FOR ME THERE, AND IT WAS NICE) AND TO LUTHERAN SERVICE AT 11, ALSO VERY NICE. NEARLY FULL HOUSE AT BOTH. METHODIST ALSO HAD ONE AT 9 AND LUTHERANS ONE EARLIER AT 4 AND 6.
NANCY'S MOTHER BELONGS TO THE METHODIST CHURCH AND WENT ALONG WITH HER TO HER SERVICE THIS YEAR.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

ZERO AGAIN LAST NIGHT....SUNNY AND COLD TODAY.
ANOTHER SCROOGE STORY. SOMEONE TOOK A SLEIGH AND REINDEER AND THE POWER CORD FROM THE LAUREL BAKER HOME AT 18730 FULTON ROAD IN MAQUOKETA. VALUE OF THE STOLEN MERCHANDISE, $120.00.
(WARNING: BEWARE OF CONTENT OF THIS STORY) IN JACKSON COUNTY MAGISTRATE COURT, 21 YEAR OLD JUSTIN GALLOWAY AND 21 YEAR OLD BRIAN WILHELM, BOTH OF MAQUOKETA, WERE CHARGED WITH ASSAULT CAUSING INJURY.
MAQUOKETA POLICE SAY THE PAIR, ALONG WITH BRIAN HOPSON AND CHRIS MAINS, KICKED ADAM BEARCE IN THE HEAD, BREAKING HIS JAW AND TEARING HIS EAR FROM HIS HEAD, DURING A FIGHT THAT HAPPENED AT 9:30 THE NIGHT OF NOVEMBER 25TH AT 206 N. DEARBORN.
LOTS OF TALK GOING ON BY MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS AND BUSINESSMEN ABOUT DOWNTOWN PARKING IN MAQUOKETA. THERE ARE SOME SPECIAL 15-MINUTE ZONES, THERE ARE MOSTLY 2-HOUR ZONES AND THERE WAS A REQUEST FOR SOME 30-MINUTE ZONES. AND THERE IS A NEED FOR MORE PARKING IN GENERAL. BUT, LIMITS IS THE BIG ISSUE THESE DAYS. AND ALL AGREE, IF THE PARKING IS NOT POLICED, NOTHING WILL WORK TO THE BETTERMENT OF PARKING. THE LATEST PROPOSAL, BY A COMMITTEE OF THE COUNCIL WOULD HAVE MADE THE WEST SIDE OF MAIN STREET 30 MINUTE SPACE AND THE EAST SIDE OF MAIN, 2-HOUR SPACES. NO ACTION TAKEN AND MORE MEETINGS ARE COMING. I THINK THEY SHOULD POUND A POLE IN THE PAVEMENT AT THE END OF EACH PARKING SPACE AND ON THAT POLE, MOUNT SOME KIND OF MACHINE WITH A TIMER ON IT AND A SLOT FOR INSERTING A COIN.
THAN FOR SO MUCH MONEY, THE SHOPPER COULD PARK FOR SO MANY MINUTES.
THEN THEY COULD HIRE A POLICEMAN WITH A 3-WHEEL MOTORCYCLE AND HE COULD GO UP AND DOWN THE STREETS TO SEE IF ANY VEHICLE WAS PARKING WERE THE TIMER HAD RUN OUT. IF A....LET'S CALL IT A METER.....IS RUN OUT, THE PERSON WITH THE VEHICLE PARKED THERE COULD BE GIVEN AN ENVELOPE TICKET AND TOLD TO PLACE A FINE IN THAT ENVELOPE. AND THEN PLACE THE ENVELOPE AT A COLLECTION BOX ON EACH SIDE OF THE STREET. THE MONEY FROM THESE FINES COULD THEN BE USED TO PAY THE SPECIAL POLICEMEN.
MAYBE SOMEONE HAS THOUGHT ABOUT THIS BEFORE. OH WELL, I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED ON MAQUOKETA DOWNTOWN PARKING PROBLEM.
JUST A FEW YEARS AGO, WE HAD SPECIAL HITCHING POSTS (NO METER) AROUND TOWN WHERE THE AMISH COULD TIE UP THEIR HORSE AND BUGGY. NO MORE AMISH AROUND, SO THOSE ARE GONE.
THERE, I STRETCHED THIS REPORT OUT A LITTLE, SO IT WOULDN'T BE TOO SHORT.
I PLAN TO HAVE A SHORT REPORT TOMORROW FOR CHRISTMAS EVE....SO LEAVE ME SOME COOKIES AND MILK (MILLER TYPE) FOR WHEN I VISIT YOUR HOME TOMORROW AFTERNOON.
HAPPY LAST MINUTE SHOPPING.

15 last night...partly sunny today and a high of 38.
Land values again went up in 2004, compared to 2003. The average value of an acre of farmland in Iowa increased $354 an acre, to an all-time high of $2,629. The annual survey was conducted by Iowa State University. In Jackson County, the land value in 2004 was $2,427 an acre, up from $2,122 last year, a 14.4 percent increase. Someone with a 200 acre farm in Jackson County, had in increase in value of his/her farm of around $60,000. Scott County again has the highest per acre value of $4,167....breaking the $4,000 barrier for first time ever.
Low interest rates and a good crop yield in 2003 were two major factors in the better than 12-percent increase statewide.
