SUNNY THIS MORNING, MOSTLY CLOUDY THIS AFTERNOON....62 TODAY'S HIGH.

APRIL RAINFALL SO FAR, 1.9 INCHES....COMPARED TO 3.5 LAST APRIL.

21 RESUMES HAVE BEEN SENT IN FOR THE CHIEF OF POLICE JOB IN MAQUOKETA. THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL HOPE TO HAVE A NEW CHEIF BY JULY 1ST.

A FIRE SUNDAY NIGHT ABOUT 8 ON ESGATE ROAD AND SAVED BY HER DOG, WAS JEAN RIVER BUCHNER, AGE 51, WHO WAS AWAKENED BY HER DOG. SHE THEN SAW THE FLAMES AND CALLED 9-1-1 AND ESCAPED WITHOUT INJURY. ANOTHER DOG DIED IN THE FIRE, WITH ESTMATED DAMAGES TO THE HOME OF $80,000. THE HOME WAS OWNED BY JEAN BUCHNER OF MAQUOKETA.
MAQUOKETA AND ANDREW FIREMEN WERE AT THE SCENE ABOUT 2 HOURS. THE FIRE IS BELIEVED TO BE ELECTRICAL.

BOY, BORN LAST FRIDAY TO LINDSAY AND MICHAEL METCALF OF PLEASANTVILLE. GRANDPARENTS ARE VERN AND CINDY POLL OF MAQUOKETA.

LARRY MYERS, AGE 63, DIED LAST THURSDAY, FOLLOWING A 3 OR 4 YEAR BATTLE WITH CANCER. HE WAS THE EXTENSION DIRECTOR FOR JACKSON COUNTY UNTIL EARLIER THIS YEAR. STARTED THE JOB IN 1997.
SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, JOAN AND TWO SONS. STARTED THE MASTER GARDNERS PROGRAM IN JACKSON COUNTY.
HE WAS IN THE AIR FORCE AFTER COLLEGE, THEN PRACTICED LAW AND WENT WITH IOWA EXTENSION IN THE 90'S.
WAS WELL LIKED BY THE 4-H KIDS AND LEADERS.

WILMER LARY, 91, DIED MONDAY AT THE LOCAL HOSPTIAL. WELL KNOW AG DEALER IN DELMAR. AVID GOLFER
TOO. HIS BUSINESS, FARMERS SUPPLY COMPANY, IS BEING RUN BY HIS SON, JOHN.

RETIRING MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELOR, OWEN THORSON, 30 YEARS IN MAQUOKETA, IS THE

DAVE RETTIG WAS THE GUEST SPEAKER AT THE MAQUOKETA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MONTHLY LUNCH TODAY AT THE COUNTRY CLUB. HE IS SON OF DARREL AND SHARON AND THE HARVARD GRAD HAS JOINED THE FAMILY BUSINESS AS CEO. THEY HAVE A HUGE EGG BUSINESS, LOCATED IN NORTHWESTERN IOWA AND WITH OFFICES HERE IN MAQUOKETA.
DARREL HAS BEEN IN THE BUSINESS MOST OF HIS LIFE AND SHARON HAS HER OWN CAREER AS AN INVESTMENT BROKER HERE IN TOWN.

MISSY GERLACH, A SENIOR AT MCHS, HAS BEEN AWARDED A $2,000 SCHOLARSHIP FROM THE GRAND LODGE OF IOWA.
SHE WAS ONE OF 60 IOWA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SELECTED TO RECEIVE A SCHOLARSHIP FROM THE 890 APPLICANTS.

FOUR CANDIDATES FOR HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL HAVE BEEN INTERVIEWED. THEY WILL BE CUT TO TWO AND IT IS HOPED THOSE TWO NAMES CAN BE NAMED NEXT MONDAY NIGHT. ONE OF THOSE WILL START WORK THIS SUMMER.

LELAND G. KROLIC, AGE 83, OF MAQUOKETA, DIED LAST FRIDAY. HE FIRST TRAVELED ACROSS AMERICA WITH A CARNIVAL AND THEN WORKED AT VARIOUS JOBS IN MAQUOKETA. HE IS SURVIVED BY 7 CHILDREN...JOHN OF DALLAS, GA....SALLY OF DES MOINES....MARY OF DUBUQUE.....RUTH OF DES MOINES.....RALPH OF DES MOINES....SUSAN OF BERNARD.....AND EDNA OF DES MOINES.
