WEDNESDAY DAILY

I'M EXCITED!    SWEET THINGS BAKERY DOWN THE STREET FROM KMAQ WILL
BE KNOWN AS SWEET THINGS BAKERY AND CAFE AND WILL OPEN TWO WEEKS
FROM TODAY.    I STOPPED IN TODAY TO TAKE A FEW PHOTOS OF THE WORK STILL
IN PROGRESS.    AFTER THEY OPEN, I WILL TAKE MORE OF THE COMPLETE NEW
LOOK.     OWNERS DONNA AND TRACY THEDE ARE EXITED TOO.
HISTORY:   WHEN I CAME TO TOWN IN 1958,  MORNING GLORY BAKERY WAS
IN THE MAIN BLOCK, SAME SIDE OF STREET, AND WAS OPEN 6 DAYS A WEEK AND
OWNED BY WALT DOLCH.   HE RAN IT FOR MANY YEARS AND WHILE DOING SO, WAS FOR ONE YEAR, PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL BAKER'S ASSOCIATION.     LATER HIS
DAUGHTER (CAROLYN) MOVED IT TO LARGER STORE AND RAN IT WITH HUSBAND.
CARROLL HIRETZ.    BOTH ARE NO LONGER LIVING, IN FACT, CAROLYN DIED
LAST YEAR.    THEN MR. AND MRS. CLAY ROMER BOUGHT IT AND RAN IT FOR A FEW YEARS AND SOLD IT TO TOM AND HIS WIFE BONNIE THEDE, NOW RETIRED AND STILL LIVING IN MAQUOKETA.   THEY SOLD IT TO JOSH COLLISTER (CITY COUNCILMAN) AND HE RAN IT QUITE A FEW YEARS AND SOLD THE BAKERY AND BUILDING TO DONNA AND TRACY.    IT HAS BEEN CLOSED A COUPLE MONTHS WHILE THEY COMPLETELY RE-DONE THE INTERIOR.    BONNIE THEDE (THERE ARE TWO BONNIE THEDES) AND SON TROY CAME TO TOWN OVER 20 YEARS AGO TO BUY, OPEN AND  RUN THE DECKER HOTEL.   THE MOTHER BONNIE (IN HER 90'S) IS NOW IN A LOCAL CARE CENTER.     TROY SOLD THE DECKER AND THEN OWNED THE NEW HOTEL SOUTH OF TOWN.   HE SOLD IT AND IS NOW IS IN BUSINESS WITH 3 OTHERS RENTING BOTH OUTDOOR AND INDOOR STORAGE UNITS.   HIS WIFE RAE ANN IS DIRECTOR OF HOSPICE OF JACKSON COUNTY.
THERE WERE 12 THEDE KIDS AND 5 NOW LIVE IN MAQUOKETA, INCLUDING A SISTER
WHO IS NOW OWNER OF DECKER HOTEL.
WOW...HOPE I CORRECTLY GOT THIS ALL.
MORE PHOTOS NOW.
PART OF SEATING AREA.   NOTE, THE OLD BRICK WALL WAS COVERED WITH PLASTER AND IT WAS REMOVED BY TRACY TO SHOW THE NICE BRICK LOOK YOU SEE.
IN BACK CORNER, THE NEXT ENTRY DOOR.   THE CURRENT MAIN DOOR WILL BE CHANGED TO A WINDOW.
THIS WAS THE FRONT WINDOW AREA FOR DISPLAYS OR DECORATION.     NOW
A COUPLE CAN DINE LOOKING OVER MAIN STREET.     IT WILL BE MOSTLY
A BAKERY, OPENING AT 5 A.M.   BUT WILL ALSO  HAVE BISCUITS AND GRAVY
IN MORNING TO GO WITH YOUR FAVORITE ROLLS AND DONUTS.   LATER IN
MORNING, THEY WILL HAVE A COUPLE SANDWICHES FOR NOON LUNCH, AND
UNTIL THEY CLOSE AT 1:30.
THE KITCHEN WAS MADE A BIT SMALLER WITH A WALL TO THE EAST PUT IN
TO ESTABLISH A STORE ROOM OFF OF THE ALLEY.     THE KITCHEN STILL IS PLENTY
ROOMY AND EASIER TO HEAT OR COOL.
THE TABLE UNDER CASH REGISTER (MARBLE TOP) WAS USED YEARS AGO
WHEN THE BAKERY ALSO MADE CANDY.    IT IS VERY HEAVY AND WILL BE
A CONVERSATION ITEM, FOR SURE.
MORE PHOTOS AFTER THE OPENING IN TWO WEEKS.

BASKETBALL:   LAST NIGHT, THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS WON AND THE BOYS LOST
THEIR GAME.
MORE SNOW COMING HIS WEEK...4 TO 5 INCHES POSSIBLE.

AND DON'T FORGET TO CIRCLE  FEBRUARY 5TH AND 6TH...THE TWO DAYS
FOR THE 23RD ANNUAL KMAQ FARM AND HOME SHOW.   MORE INFO COMING
SOON.
