A PHOTO FROM THE PAST....1960
EVERETT SCHOENTHALER WAS A LAWYER IN MAQUOKETA.
STAN BARTON WAS KMAQ'S FIRST NEWS DIRECTOR FROM 1958 TO LATE 1960.
ROBERT MELVOLD WAS PUBLISHER OF THE MAQUOKETA NEWSPAPER.
JOHN JARGO WAS A BANKER.
HARLAN EASTON HAD A GROCERY STORE WHERE KMAQ IS NOW. I PURCHASED
THIS BUILDING FROM HIS WIFE IN 1969.
DUD YOCUM OWNED THE WESTERN AUTO STORE AND SMOKED A PIPE.
HAROLD MILWRIGHT WAS POSTMASTER FOLLOWING OWNING A FARM MACHINERY
BUSINESS DOWNTOWN WHERE MY THEATRE IS NOW. WALT DOLCH OWNED
THE DOWNTOWN BAKERY AND SERVED ONE YEAR AS PRESIDENT OF THE
AMERICAN BAKER'S ASSOCIATION. JIM ROUND RAN A SHOE STORE. HIS
SON NOW LIVES IN RURAL MAQUOKETA. WHEN STAN BARTON LEFT MAQUOKETA,
I REPLACED HIM ON THE BOARD. THE MAQUOKETA SALVATION ARMY WAS
THE OLDEST WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. AFTER IT CLOSED, THE CITADEL
STOOD EMPTY FOR A LONG TIME JUST NORTH OF THE DECKER HOTEL AND LATER WAS MOVED TO HORSESHOE POND PARK SOUTH OF TOWN AND IS USED NOW
AS A CHURCH. THE SALVATION ARMY IN MAQUOKETA HAD A BAND AND I
RECALL HEARING IT PLAY OFTEN ON THE SIDEWALKS IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA.
