AT ROTARY TODAY AND UPDATED THE CLUB ON WORK BEING DONE WITH THE
PARK CLOSED. THE MAIN ROAD THROUGH THE PARK IS ABOUT READY TO BE
PAVED WITH CONCRETE. HE SAID IT IS WIDER AND HAS A SIDEWALK ON BOTH
SIDES FOR SAFETY. NEW ELECTRICAL WORK IS BEING INSTALLED MAINLY IN
THE CAMPGROUND, WITH ONE NEW CAMP SPACE ADDED. WORK IS STILL
SCHEDULED TO BE COMPLETED IN LATE AUGUST, SO THE PARK MAY OPEN FOR
A FEW WEEKS. THE SPRING BREAKFAST IS BEING PLANNED FOR SEPTEMBER BY
THE FRIENDS OF THE PARK. OVERALL, THE WORK BEING DONE WILL RUN OVER
$600,000.
THE PARKING AREA FOR POLICE CARS IS BEING RESURFACED THIS WEEK JUST
WEST OF THE LAW CENTER. THE FAMOUS PENROSE HOUSE, NOW EMPTY, AND
OWNED BY THE COUNTY IS AT RIGHT. THE NEW JAIL WILL BE BUILDT JUST
NORTH OF WALMART.
THE CARDINAL GIRLS PLAYED THEIR FIRST 18 HOLES YESTERDAY IN THE STATE
TOURNAMENT AND WERE IN 9TH PLACE THIS MORNING. THEIR FINAL18 HOLES
ARE BEING PLAYED TODAY.
THE MAQUOKETA BOYS BASEBALL TEAM LOST A DOUBLE-HEADER TO WESTERN DUBUQUE YESTERDAY, 11 TO 0 AND 11 TO 0...IN FIVE-INNING GAMES. HAVE NOT
WON YET...OFF TO A BAD START OF THE SEASON.
THE GIRLS ALSO LOST A DH TO WESTERN DUBUQUE, 9 TO 2 ADN 6 TO 2. THEY
HAVE ONE WIN SO FAR.
AT THE MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE IN MAQUOKETA MONDAY, BOB STOCKHAM,
LONGTIME RETIRED MAQUOKETA CONTRACTOR, WAS HONORED FOR 70 YEARS OF
MEMBERSHIP IN THE VFW AND LEGION. HE IS 93 AND WAS NOT PRESENT.
BUT ... ACCEPTING THE CERTIFICATE WAS HIS SON DAVE, WHO NOW RUNS THE
FAMILY BUSINESS THAT IS OVER 100 YEARS OLD. AND DAVE UNKNOWING TOOK
TO THE MIC TO TALK ABOUT HIS DAD. HE MENTIONED HOW HIS DAD TELLS OF HIS
ENCOUNTERS WHILE IN WWII, INCLUDING BEING WOUNDED TWICE, AND HOW HIS DAD FINISHES EACH STORY WITH THE WORDS...."BAD, BUT I MADE IT".
EVERYONE LISTENED TO DAVE CAREFULLY AND APPRECIATED HIS COMMENTS.
