FRIDAY DAILY

"DEEPWATER HORIZON" SHOWING NOW AT THE VOY 3 THEATRE AND ALSO
THIS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE.    GOOD, 3 AND A HALF STARS BY Q.C. TIMES LINDA COOK.

YESTERDAY I TOOK PHOTOS OF THE OSTERHAUS BUILDING AS THEY
WERE TAKING DOWN THE METAL PANELS ON THE FRONT TO EXPOSE THE
ORIGINAL BRICK.    THE PLAN IS TO RETORE THE FRONTS TO THE ORIGINAL
LOOK OF A HUNDRED YEARS AGO.   WHEN I CAME TO TOWN IN 1958 (WHEN KMAQ WENT ON AIR THAT AUGUST) IN THE ABOVE BUILDING WAS THE
SCHULTZ BROTHERS VARIETY STORE, A CHAIN STORE.   IF YOU LOOK
ABOVE THE WINDOWS, YOU CAN SEE IT WAS ONCE THE  HOME OF "RINGLEP HARDARE".    I DON'T KNOW IF THERE WAS AN ACTUAL 3RD FLOOR OR IF
THE SECOND FLOOR JUST HAD A HIGH CEILING.   IT WAS KNOWN AS THE
CENTENNIAL BUILDING, BUILDT ON THE100TH BIRTHDAY OF THE U.S. IN 1876,
THE SAME YEAR THE DECKER HOTEL WAS FINISHED.    THE HARDWARE STORE MOVED TO WHERE BRAD DEERY MOTORS SHOWROOM IS NOW AND
THEN THE 3RD MOVE WAS TO THE CORNER OF MAIN AND PLEASANT, WHERE
THE GREEN SPACE IS NOW.    IN THAT LOCATION, THE HARDWARE STORE
WAS OWNED BY BEN  JACOBSEN, FORMER MAYOR AND FIREMAN, WHO DIED
IN HIS 90'S  AND THE STORE CLOSED.   BELOW, A CLOSER LOOK AT THE
ABOVE.
NOW  YOU CAN SEE THE HARDWARE NAME ABOVE WINDOWS  AND 1876 AT THE TOP AND PART OF THE WORD CENTENNIAL.
RIGHT ABOVE MAQUOKETA WAS ONE OF THOSE WINDOWS THAT EXTENDED
OUT ABOUT 3 FEET SO  YOU COULD LOOK UP AND DOWN THE STREET.
DOUBT IF THEY WILL REPLACE IT.      I HOPE THEY REPLACE THE METAL
WITH THE SIGN ATTACHED.   IT WILL REALLY LOOK SHARP WHEN COMPLETED.
1/  NOW MAX RAY JEWELER (SINCE THE EARLY 40'S)

4/ HANCHAR PHARMACY
5/ HINCKLEY PHARMACY (TO OSTERHAUS PHARMACY IN 1965)
6/ GREEN MILL CAFE    (BEFORE MOVING TO WEST PLATT,  OSTERHAUS PHARMACY WAS IN BUILDINGS 3,4 5 AND 6)
7/  SNOW WHITE PHARMACY  (DOWN THE STREET NORTH, CARSON
PHARMACY, NOW MEXICAN RESTAURANT ON THE CORNER.    YES, BACK
IN 1958, FOUR PHARMACIES IN LESS THAN A BLOCK IN DISTANCE.
MORE ON THE NEW LOOK OF THESE BUILDINGS AS WORK CONTINUES.

ABOVE, SHOWING NOW AT THE VOY TRIPLEX THEATRE.
