THE JACKSON COUNTY CONSERVATION BOARD REVIEWED 6 BIDS FOR THE PHASE ONE PROJECT AT THE NEW PRAIRIE CREEK RECREATION AREA JUST
EAST OF MAQUOKETA AT THEIR MEETING LAST NIGHT AND THE APPARENT
LOW BIDDER WAS GARY IHRIG CONSTRUCTION OF MAQUOKETA, A BID
OF $378,115 TO CONSTRUCT THE ROAD LEADING INTO THE PARK, DO THE
UTILITY WORK AND ALSO CONSTRUCT A POND. THE ENGINEER ESTIMATE
FOR THE JOB WAS MUCH HIGHER, AT $579.000. THE BOARD TABLED
ACTION ON THE BID UNTIL THEY HAVE A CHANCE TO REVIEW IT WITH
THE COUNTY ATTORNEY. FUNDING IS IN PLACE. JUST LAST WEEK THE BOARD WAS AWARDED A $75,000 GRANT. THE IOWA D.N.R. AND THE NATIONAL PARK SYSTEM MUST GIVE THEIR APPROVAL FOR THE PROJECT BEFORE THE FUNDS CAN BE USED. THE CONSERVATION BOARD HAS ALSO RECEIVED A $48,000 FISH HABITAT GRANT. THE REST OF THE MONEY
WILL COME FROM COUNTY RESERVES, THE REAP FUND, AND FUNDS FROM
THE PARKS TO PEOPLE PROJECT. PRAIRIE CREEK PARK WILL BE A VERY
NICE PARK WHEN COMPLETED.
PAM BAHR, ABOVE, LAST WEEK RECEIVED THE LATE GRACE TUBBS VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD AT THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL VOLUNTEER LUNCH AT THE CLINTON ENGINES MUSEUM. EVERY YEAR AT THAT LUNCHEON, THE TUBBS FAMILY PRESENTS THE AWARD TO A PERSON NOT AWARE OF GETTING IT. PAM AND HER HUSBAND, JIM ENGLAND, OWN WOODFORM, INC. IN MAQUOKETA'S FIRST (THERE ARE 3)
INDUSTRIAL PARK. THEY HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS THERE SINCE 1988 AND THEIR WOOD PRODUCTS ARE SOLD AROUND THE WORLD. PAM IS A
FRIEND OF THE MAQUOKETA LIBRARY, A VOLUNTEER AT THE FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH, HELPS WITH THE LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF QUILT
PROGRAM AND MENTORS TWO ELEMENTARY KIDS AT ANDREW SCHOOL,
WHERE THEIR TWO CHILDREN WENT TO SCHOOL. SHE READS WEEKLY TO THE TWO. PAM AND JIM'S TWO CHILDREN LIVE IN WASHINGTON AND
WASHINGTON. THE DAUGHTER IN WASHINGTON D.C. WORKS FOR THE
SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE AND THEIR SON WORKS FOR BOEING IN THE
STATE OF WASHINGTON. BOTH SINGLE, BUT THERE WILL BE A WEDDING OUT WEST THIS SUMMER. THEIR SON IS MARRYING AMY SCHWAGER OF
MAQUOKETA. THEY WERE HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS AND NOW AFTER 10 YEARS, WILL TIE THE KNOT. CONGRATULATIONS TO PAM ON HER AWARD, WHICH INCLUDED A $500 CASH AWARD TO GIVE TO THE CHARITY OF HER CHOICE. SHE DECIDED TO GIVE HALF TO THE LIBRARY AND THE OTHER HALF TO LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF AND SHE ALSO RECEIVED AN ENGRAVED
MANTLE CLOCK. AND THANKS TO THE TUBBS FAMILY FOR SPONSORING
THIS ANNUAL EVENT IN MEMORY OF GRACE (MRS. ED) TUBBS. ED ALSO
IS DECEASED AND WITH THE LATE JOHN FAGERLAND, THE TWO TOOK
THE SMALL MAQUOKETA STATE BANK IN 1959 TO ONE OF THE BIGGEST
COMMUNITY BANKS IN THE STATE.
WHEN CALLING OUT BINGO NUMBERS THIS AFTERNOON, I TOOK THIS
PHOTO FROM THE STUDIO. THEY ARE WORKING RIGHT OUTSIDE OUR
FRONT DOOR.
FAIRYLAND PARK BALLROOM SOUTH OF DEWITT ON OLD HIGHWAY 61 HAS
A NEW OWNER. MR. AND MRS. LUKE JORGENSEN ARE REMODELING
IT AND WILL RE-OPEN IT THIS SUMMER AS "WAPSI WILLY'S". IT WILL
BE A RESTAURANT, BAR AND EVENTS CENTER. IT HAS FLOODED
SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE YEARS BY THE WAPSI RIVER, BUT NOW IT
HAS A FLOOD WALL AROUND THE BUILDING.
