THE WELLMARK FOUNDATION TODAY ANNOUNCED THEIR 2015 COMMUNITY "KICK START" GRANT RECIPIENTS.    THE MAQUOKETA FARMERS
MARKET WAS ONE OF 121 APPLICATIONS CONSIDERED.    OF THOSE, 54 WERE FUNDED BUT THE REQUEST FROM   MAQUOKETA WAS NOT ONE
OF THEM.    MONTICELLO GOT A $10,000 GRANT TO DEVEOP A "POCKET
PARK" IN DOWNTOWN MONTICELLO.

SUNSHINE LEARNING CENTER LAST WEEK HELD A SMALL CEREMONY TO DEDICATE THE FIRST "BUDDY BENCH" IN MAQUOKETA.    SUNSHINE CHILDREN OF ALL AGES WERE ON HAND TO LEARN ABOUT THE SIMPLE IDEA TO ELIMINATE LONELINESS AND FOSTER FRIENDSHIP ON THE PLAYGROUND.
ADULTS WHO ATTENDED THE EVENT LEARNED THAT THE "BUDDY BENCH" IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE COMMITMENT THAT SUNSHINE LEARNING CENER HAS TO PROMOTE PHYSICAL AND ACADEMIC LEARNING AND TO HELP CHILDREN THRIVE SOCIALLY AND EMOTIONALLY.   WHEN A STUDENT ON THE PLAYGROUND IS FEELING SAD OR LONELY, THEY SIT ON THE "BUDDY BENCH".    WHEN OTHER STUDENTS SEE A CHILD ON THE BENCH, THEY SIT DOWN TOO, TO TALK, LISTEN OR TO JUST BE A FRIEND.   THE SUNSHINE LEARNING BUDDY BENCH WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY PRIVATE DONORS.
BELOW, A PHOTO OF SUNSHINE KIDS THAT PARTICIPATED IN THE CEREMONY LAST WEEK AND A PHOTO OF THE BENCH.
