OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER PARKING LOT IN MAQUOKETA.
MANGER TED STRAIT TOLD KMAQ DESPITE THE COOL WEATHER,
ATTENDANCE WAS ABOVE AVERAGE FOR OPENING DAY, WITH 19 VENDORS....
ALL BUT ONE RETURNING FROM LAST SEASON. THERE WAS "LIVE" MUSIC
BY RANDY McCUTCHON, A FOOD STAND OPERATED BY THE JACKSON COUNTY BEEF PRODUCERS AND A KIDS FUN ZONE. TED STRAIT
SAID THE VENDORS OFFERED FRESH ONIONS, RADISHES, CELERY,
SPINACH, TOMATOES AND ASPARAGUS, ALSO BEDDING PLANTS, BAKED
GOODS, PROCESSED PORK, WINE AND MORE.
STRAIT REMINDS EVERYONE THAT THE NEXT FARMERS MARKET
IN MAQUOKETA WILL BE NEXT TUESDAY STARTING AT 4 P.M. AND EVERY TUESDAY UNTIL OCTOBER.
THE MAQUOKETA OPTIMIST CLUB ANNUAL "RESPECT FOR THE LAW" BANQUET WAS LAST NIGHT AT THE EAGLES CLUB, WITH 64 IN ATTENDANCE.
PRESENT WERE SOME MEMBERS OF OPTIMIST...INCLUDING THE IOWA DISTRICT GOVERNOR AND GOVERNOR ELECT....MEMBERS OF THE
MAQUOKETA POLICE DEPARTMENT...THE JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF'S
DEPARTMENT....IOWA STATE TROOPERS AND AUXILIARY POLICE.
THE GUEST SPEAKER WAS JENNIFER MEYER FROM THE HURSTVILLE
INTERPRETIVE CENTER WHO TOLD THE PLANS FOR THE "PARKS TO
PEOPLE" PROGRAM FOR JACKSON, JONES AND DUBUQUE COUNTIES.
OPTIMIST CLUB PRESIDENT JODI COAKLEY PRESENTED THE ANNUAL
RESPECT FOR LAW AWARD TO DOUG MELVOLD, FORMER EDITOR
AND PUBLISHER OF THE MAQUOKETA SENTINAL-PRESS FOR HIS
SERVICE TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OVER THE YEARS.

LAST NIGHT, THE MARION GIRLS SOCCER TEAM DEFEATED MAQUOKETA,
3 TO 2 AND THE CARDINAL BOYS ALSO LOST TO MARION, 4 TO 1.
THE MOVE OF THE LAMOTTE NARROW GUAGE RAILROAD DEPOT WILL
BE HELD NEXT TUEDAY. BONNIE MITCHELL, CURATOR FOR THE
NEW OWNER OF THE DEPOT, THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY,
TOLD KMAQ NEWS THAT THE ROOF WAS TAKEN OFF IN 2 SECTIONS
YESTERDAY AND PLACED ON TRAILERS. NOW THE ROOF AND THE
BUILDING ITSELF WILL BE MOVED DOWN HIGHWAY 62 BY A PROFESSIONAL
MOVING FIRM. THE DEPOT WILL BE PLACED ON A NEW CONCRETE
FLOOR (ALREADY POURED) NEXT TO THE PARKING LOT OF THE
CLINTON ENGINES MUSEUM IN MAQUOKETA.
