THE MAQUOKETA FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AROUND 5 YESTERDAY
AFTERNOON TO ANAMOSA SILOS JUST NORTH OF MAQUOKETA. A PASSERBY REPORTED BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM THE CHIMNEY OF
THE BUILDING. NO FIRE...THE OIL BURNING STOVE MALFUNCTIONED AND THAT CAUSED THE BLACK SMOKE. AN EMPLOYEE WAS CALLED TO
TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM AND FIREMEN WERE AT THE SCENE FOR LESS THAN 15 MINUTES.
LATER SUNDAY AFTERNOON, A GAS SMELL WAS NOTED ON WEST SUMMIT AND MYATT DRIVE, ALSO AT WESTERN AVENUE AND PLATT AND SO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED. BLACK HILLS WAS THAN CONTACED AND THE
SMELL DISAPPEARED AND THE SOURCE WAS NEVER DISCOVERED.
FRIDAY NIGHT THERE WAS AN OVEN FIRE ON NORTH WALNUT REPORTED BY CHASTITY HAGEN. FIREMEN ARRIVED AND QUICKLY PUT IT OUT.
YOU MAY RECALL A STORY I HAD JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS ABOUT A MAN BEING KILLED ON DECEMBER 23RD IN FRANCE BY A SNOW AVALANCHE, WHO WAS THE SON-IN-LAW OF LIN REDLING OF MAQUOKETA. SURVIVORS INCLUDE LIN'S DAUGHTER AMY AND 5 GRANDCHILDREN. LIN RETURNED HOME TO MAQUOKETA THIS WEEKEND AFTER BEING WITH THE FAMILY AT THE FAMILY HOME IN SUMMIT, NEW JERSEY. CRAIG SHIFFER, AGE 58, WAS AN INVESTMENT BANKER WHO HELD NUMEROUS GLOBAL LEADERSHIP ROLES IN OVER 35 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY.
I RECEIVED AN EMAIL THIS MORNING FROM LIN ASKING THAT I PASS ON A HUGE "THANK YOU" TO ALL OF MAQUOKETA FOR THE IMMEDIATE OUTPOURING OF CARDS, CALLS AND OVERALL SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY.SHE SAID MAQUOKETA REALLY IS ONE OF A KIND.
IN SPORTS, THE MAQUOKETA CARDINAL BOYS AND GIRLS BASKETBALL
TEAMS DROPPED A WAMAC CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER AT THE GYM IN DEWITT FRIDAY NIGHT. THE GIRLS LOST 49 TO 28. THE BOYS
LOST 61 TO 56 TO THE SABERS.
SATURDAY NIGHT THE BOYS LOST A NON-CONFERENCE GAME AT THE
MAQUOKETA GYM TO CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON, 55 TO 41.
SATURDAY, THE MAQUOKETA CARDINAL WRESTLING TEAM FINISHED 13TH IN A 16-TEAM FIELD AT THE BENTON COMMUNITY INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT IN VAN HORNE.
AND IN BOWLING FRIDAY NIGHT AT TIMBER LANES HERE IN MAQUOKETA,
BOTH THE BOYS AND GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BOWLING TEAMS DEFEATED INDEPENDANCE IN WAMAC ACTION.
