FRIDAY DAILY REPORT

A LITTLE RAIN EARLY THIS MORNING AND TODAY, CLOUDY, WINDY AND
COOL...AROUND 50.   THE WEEKEND WON'T BE MUCH BETTER.

DOUG KNICKREHM OF MAQUOKTA IS THE NEW PRESIDENT OF  THE
MAQUOKETA KIWANIS CLUB, REPLACING MATT TRANNEL, WHO HAS SERVED THE PAST YEAR.    THE NEW VICE-PRESIDENT AND PRESIDENT-ELECT
IS STEVE KAHLER.    RE-ELECTED TREASURER, JAN KAHLER AND RE-ELECTED SECRETARY, TRISHA MANTHEI.    OTHER MEMBERS OF THE
BOARD ARE WENDY SCOTT, DEAN ENGEL, KAREN BREITBACH, BRAD YOUNG,
PEGGY FLENKER AND ARLENE LYON.    THE MAQUOKETA KIWANIS CLUB
MEETS AT NOON THURSDAYS AT THE DECKER HOTEL RESTAURANT.   KIWANIS IS A GLOBAL ORGANIZATION OF MEMBERS DEDICATED TO SERVING
CHILDREN OF THE WORLD.

THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE MAQUOKETA OPTIMIST CLUB IS JODI COAKLEY.
THE VICE-PRESIDENT, GLEN SHORT.     JAMIE FRETT, TREASURER.    JUDY BICKFORD, RE-ELECTED SECRETARY.   BOARD MEMBERS ARE:  ALICE  HENSHAW, VERA RANDALL, BOB ANDERSEN, BRETT RATHJE,  KATE KRABBENHOFT AND JOSH COLLISTER.    AT THE INSTALATION DINNER,  THIS YEAR'S OUTGOING PRESIDENT JAKE BICKFORD PRESENTED THE OPTIMIST OF THE YEAR AWARD TO JIM REGENWETHER, RETIRED BUSINESSMAN.    
THE OPTIMIST MEET FOR 7 A.M. BREAKFAST EVERY WEDNESDAY AT THE
EAGLES CLUB.    THEY ARE MOST NOTED FOR THEIR PATRIOTIC HOLIDAY
FLAG PLACING IN MAQUOKETA.    OVER 500 FLAGS FLY EACH PATRIOTIC
HOLIDAY AT HOME ALL OVER THE CITY.    THEY SELL THE FLAGS FOR
A ONE-YEAR PERIOD AND THEN PUT UP AND TAKE DOWN (WITH THE HELP OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS) THE FLAGS 5 OR 6 TIMES A YEAR.   IT IS THEIR
MAIN FUND RAISING PROJECT TO FUND  THEIR COMMUNITY PROJECTS.
THEY ALSO HAVE A  POPULAR FOOD STAND EVERY YEAR AT THE COUNTY
FAIR. 

BIG DAY TOMORROW IN MAQUOKETA.   THE CARNIVAL, THE HILLBILLY HOT FOOT RUNS, AND THE CAR SHOW ON MAIN TOMORROW NIGHT.

THE BIG HOUSE THAT IS HAVING SOME WORK DONE ON IT....SHOWN IN MY DAILY REPORT THE OTHER DAY....JUST SOUTH OF THE LIBRARY, HAS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT PART IN MAQUOKETA'S HISTORY.   THANKS TO THOSE THAT FILLED ME IN ON THE HOME.    TURNS OUT, IT WAS A HOSPITAL
KNOWN AS THE "LEROY HOSPITAL" IN THE 40'S.  BILL LUCKEY WAS THE FIRST TO EMAIL THAT INFORMATION.    ALLEN BODKIN SAYS HE WAS BORN THERE ON JANUARY 30TH, 1941.    EARL KEMP AND GERALDINE LAMBERT, BOTH OF SPRAGUEVILLE, ALSO KNEW IT WAS A HOSPITAL AND VELMA WITT OF MAQUOKETA WORKED THERE AS A  STUDENT AIDE VOLUNTEER WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL.


 IT WILL BE RAILROAD DAY SUNDAY....THE ANNUAL PIONEER DAY....
AT THE FAIRGROUNDS, SPONSORED BY THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY.  
FROM 9:30 A.M. UNTIL MID-AFTERNOON.   FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY.
GOOD FOOD.   A GUEST SPEAKER FROM THE IOWA  D.O.T.   AND MORE.
RIDE THE 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE TRAIN ABOVE.

HOMECOMING TONIGHT.   CHECK HERE TOMORROW MORNING FOR THE
SCORE.   GO CARDINALS.  BEAT MARION.
