TILL'S FLOORING AND CARPENTRY WAS SET TO OPEN IN A FEW DAYS,
FOLLOWING MONTHS OF WORK REDOING THE FORMER T-N-T CONE SHOP.
AT 11:30 LAST NIGHT, FIRE IN THE BUILDING WAS REPORTED BY A PASSING
MOTORIST ON EAST PLATT STREET. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE WAS DONE TO
THE BUILDING OWNED BY TODD AND RACHEL TILL. THEY HAVE HAD A
FLOOR COVERING BUSINESS FOR A LONG TIME, OPERATING OUT OF THEIR
HOUSE. THIS BUILDING WAS TO GET THEM IN THE CARPETING BUSINESS ALSO, WITH A RETAIL SHOWROOM. IN THE STOREROOM, $30,000 WORTH
OF CARPET WAS RUINED. THE LEFT SIDE OF BUILDING SUFFERED THE LEAST DAMAGE. FIREMEN WERE AT THE SCENE UNTIL 2 A.M. AND THEN WERE CALLED BACK AT 3 THIS AFTERNOON TO EXTIGUISH A "HOT" SPOT.
TODD SAYS THE BUSINESS WAS COVERED BY INSURANCE. THE FIRE MARSHALL WAS CALLED IN TO INVESTIGATE THE FIRE AND SO FAR HAS NOT
DETERMINED THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. PRIOR TO THE CONE SHOP, THIS
WAS THE LOCATION AND BUILDING FOR DUDE'S (REICHLING) 66 SERVICE
STATION.
FIRE DESTROYED A POPULAR RESTAURANT IN MONTICELLO SATURDAY
AFTERNOON. IT STARTED AROUND 3 P.M. AT "THE WAGON WHEEL".
THE 5TH STREET BOAT RAMP WAS CLOSED FOR AWHILE SATURDAY
AFTER A VEHICLE AND BOAT TRAILER BACKED DOWN THE RAMP TO
UNLOAD A BOAT AND BECAUSE OF A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM ON THE S.U.V......THE S.U.V. AND TRAILER WENT INTO THE MAQUOKETA RIVER AND WERE COMPLETELY SUBMERGED. DIVERS FROM THE QUAD CITIES
WERE CALLED TO PINPOINT THE LOCATION OF BOTH WHICH WERE OWNED BY A LOST NATION MAN. ONCE FOUND IN THE RIVER BY DIVERS, A CREW
FROM B & G AUTO PULLED THE VEHICLE AND TRAILER FROM THE RIVER.
THE S.U.V. WAS DESCRIBED AS A TOTAL LOSS.
ON THE WEEKEND POLICE BLOTTER:
OFFICIALS OF THE CENTERSTONE INN (MOTEL ON S. MAIN) REPORTED
A GUEST'S CAR HAD SOME GASOLINE SIPHONED FROM IT OVERNIGHT.
AND MERLYN YEAGER, 7TH STREET RURAL MAQUOKETA, REPORTED SUNDAY THAT SOMEONE STOLE SOME COPPER FROM HIS PROPERTY.
ROCHELLE RAY, AGE 76, OF MAQUOKETA, OWNER OF MAX RAY JEWELER
IN MAQUOKETA, DIED SATURDAY NIGHT AT HER APARTMENT ABOVE THE
STORE. SHE HAS BEEN TREATED FOR MEDICAL PROBLEMS THE PAST
YEAR. HER JEWELRY STORE IS ONE OF THE OLDEST BUSINESS PLACES
IN MAQUOKETA. SERVICES ARE PENDING AT LAHEY FUNERAL HOME.
HER HUSBAND TOM DIED ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO. SHE IS SURVIVED BY
A DAUGHTER HERE IN MAQUOKETA AND A SON IN OKLAHOMA.
