SATURDAY IN SPARTA, ILLINOIS. THE VARSITY SQUAD RECENTLY WON THE STATE MEET IN CEDAR FALLS. THERE, THE MAQUOKETA SHOOTERS BROKE A RECORD BY BREAKING 245 OUT OF 250. THEIR COACHES ARE STEVE FOWLER (HEAD COACH), MARK SCHEIBE, TOM MILLER, MAYOR DON SCHWENKER AND ZACH SCHEIBE,

GUEST SPEAKER WAS CAROL BODENSTEINER WHO HAS WRITTEN TWO BOOKS, HER LATEST A NOVEL SET IN 20TH CENTURY IOWA AND MAQUOKETA. SHE WAS BORN IN JACKSON COUNTY AND GREW UP ON A FARM ABOUT 9 MILES EAST OF
MAQUOKETA. KATHY BANOWETZ PURCHASED THE BOOK, "GO AWAY HOME"
AND IS SHOWN GETTING IT AUTOGRAPHED. SHE SOLD QUITE A FEW BOOKS

SOME WEEKEND ACCIDENTS. DONALD CARLSON, 63, OF MAQUOKETA WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON MAIN STREET AND STOPPED AT THE INTERSECTION WITH SUMMIT LATE FRIDAY MORNING AND KATHRYN BARTELS, AGE 96, TRIED TO DRIVE ACROSS MAIN STREET AND HIT THE SIDE OF THE CARLSON VEHICLE. $1,000 DAMAGE TO CARLSON'S 1997 TRUCK AND $3,500 DAMAGE
TO BARTEL'S 2003 MERCURY. NO CHARGES FILED AND NO INJURIES.
MICHAEL SCOTT OF MAQUOKETA WAS PARKING ON NORTH MAIN SIDE OF THE BANK FRIDAY AFTERNOON AT McKINSEY AND PLATT STREETS.
DOUGLAS KLEINSMITH HIT THE SCOTT VEHICLE WHICH WAS PARKING. $800 DAMAGE TO KLEINSMITH'S 2005 CHRYSLER AND $800 DAMAGE TO SCOTT'S AUDI. NO CHARGES FILED AND NO INJURIES.
A ONE VEHICLE ACCIDENT SATURDAY AFTERNOON. JENSEN CAMPBELL, AGE 16, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS DRIVING WEST ON THE CAVES ROAD WHEN HE REACHED FOR SOMETHING ON THE FLOOR AND HIS VEHICLE DROPPED OFF THE ROAD AND HE OVERCORRECTED. THE FORD EXPLORER ROLLED INTO THE DITCH AND CAME TO REST ON IT'S TOP. DAMAGES OF $8,000 TO TJE 1997 VEHICLE. CAMPBELL WAS CHARGED WITH FAILUERE TO MAINTAIN
CONTROL. NO INJURIES.
A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW MAMA J, (JUDY BUNTEMEYER) OF GOOSE LAKE.
SHE SANG AT THE KMAQ FARM AND HOME SHOW A COUPLE YEARS AGO,
HAS ENTERTAINED AT MAQUOKETA'S FARMER MARKET (WILL BE THERE TOMORROW NIGHT SINGING) AND WAS ENTERNTAINING AT THE LUNCH ON THE DAIRY FARM IN JUNE. YESTERDAY, SHE SANG AT THE ANNUAL DINNER
AND LAWN SOCIAL AT SUGAR CREEK, SPONSORED BY THE PARISH OF MARY AND JOSEPH, SUGAR CREEK AND BRYANT. AFTER SINGING SOLO, SHE ASKED HER SISTER TO COME ON STAGE AND SING WITH HER. AND S0 SISTER CATHERINE DID SEVERAL POPULAR SONGS WITH SISTER MAMA J.
THEY GREW UP IN CLINTON COUNTY (PLUGTOWN)....TWO OF 12 DROSTE KIDS. I VISITED WITH SISTER CATHERINE AND SHE SAID SHE WENT TO NORTHEAST SCHOOL IN GOOSE LAKE BUT GRADUATED FROM MATER DEI HIGH SCHOOL IN CLINTON. SHE GOT COLLEGE DEGREES AT 2 OR 3 COLLEGES. NOW SHE LIVES IN ROME, ITALY AND TEACHES A THEOLOGY COURSE AT A UNIVERSITY IN ST. THOMAS. THIS IS HER 25TH ANNIVERSARY AS A NUN. SHE HAS NEVER MET THE POPE, BUT SINCE THIS IS HER SPECIAL YEAR, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY SHE MAY GET TO MEET HIM. SHE COMES HOME ONCE A YEAR AND I TOLD HER WE WILL TRY TO HAVE HERE ON KMAQ'S "JUST TALK" SHOW NEXT SUMMER.

NO STOCK CAR RACES AND FIREWORKS AGAIN LAST SATURDAY.....AND SO
THE FIREWORKS POSTPONED ANOTHER WEEK UNTIL THIS SATURDAY NIGHT.
THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS LOST THEIR TOURNAMENT SOFTBALL GAME
AT ELDRIDGE LAST SATURDAY NIGHT AGAINST NORTH SCOTT.
