BIG STORY TODAY....A MAQUOKETA POLICE OFFICER WAS SHOT JUST BEFORE 3 THIS MORNING. HERE IS SHERI MELVOLD'S STORY:
A BARN WAS DESTROYED ALONG WITH NUMEROUS ROUND BALES AROUND 3:30 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT THE LARRY SCHNOOR FARM AT 5031
151ST STREET. A SHED AND EQUIPMENT INSIDE THE LARGE BARN WAS
LOST IN THE BLAZE. THERE WAS A CAR IN THE SHED TOO. WHEN FIREMEN ARRIVED, THE BARN WAS FULLY INVOLVED. FIREMEN SPENT NEARLY 5 HOURS AT THE FIRE. AN ADJACENT CATTLE PEN WAS DESTROYED BUT THERE WERE NO ANIMALS INSIDE. THE CAUSE IS UNKNOWN. FIRE CHIEF MARK BECK SAID HIGH WINDS HAMPERED FIREFIGHTER'S EFFORTS TO
PUT OUT THE FIRE. IN FACT, HE SAID THE WIND WAS THE WORST HE HAS
EVER SCENE WHILE FIGHTING A FIRE.
MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC UTILITY BOARD MEMBERS WILL BE
