ANOTHER NICE DAY...
HIGH OF 78 AGAIN.
TOMORROW, SUNNY AND 77.
INDEPENDENCE DAY, PARTLY SUNNY AND 78.
THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL DISTRICT AND CLINTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE
ARE HAVING AN OPEN HOUSE FOR THE NEW ADVANCED MANUFACTURING
CENTER NEXT TUESDAY, JULY 9TH FROM 2 UNTIL 7 P.M. THE BUILDING
IS LOCATED ON THE HIGH SCHOOL GROUNDS ADJACENT TO THE
CLINTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE BUILDING AND IS ATTACHED BY A PASSAGEWAY TO THE BUILDING THAT CONTAINS THE HIGH SCHOOL
WELDING PROGRAM. THE $550,000 CENTER IS 3,000 SQUARE FEET OF LAB SPACE FOR STUDENTS TO WORK ON MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT.
AT THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT, POLICE CHEIF BRAD KORANDA
TALKED ABOUT THE BAD WEATHER SIRENS IN MAQUOKETA.
TWO IMPORTANT THINGS HE COVERED. ONE, THE SIRENS ARE MEANT ONLY
FOR PEOPLE OUTSIDE AND URGES THEM TO GO INSIDE.... AND WHEN
INSIDE, THEY THEN PLAN THEIR NEXT STEP. THIS SHOULD INCLUDE
CELL PHONE, RADIO AND TV TO GET MORE INFORMATION. AND SECOND,
THERE IS NO LONGER AN "ALL CLEAR" SIREN.
WHEN IN THE PEARSON CENTER DURING THE CAR SHOW LAST WEEK, I RAN
INTO AVERLE WILSON AND SON GREG. AVERLE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST MAQUOKETA RESIDENTS I MET AND WORKED-WITH WHEN I CAME TO
MAQUOKETA IN AUGUST OF 1958. SHE HAD A PRINTING SHOP THEN AND
DAILY, PRINTED A SMALL NEWSLETTER WHICH, ALONG WITH THAT DAY'S NEWS AND SPORTS AND WEATHER HEADLINES, INCLUDED THE LATEST
ON THE BUILDING OF KMAQ-AM. I TOOK THIS NEWSLETTER TO EVERY
RESTAURANT IN TOWN AND PLACED IT AT TABLES FOR PEOPLE TO READ
DURING COFFEE AND BREAKFAST. IT WAS A "COUNT-DOWN" TO
KMAQ'S FIRST DAY ON-THE-AIR. A FEW YEARS LATER, AVERLE MOVED
TO DUBUQUE AND HAD A SUCCESSFULL CAREER THERE UNTIL RETIRING.
GREG MAKES A VISIT TO SEE HIS MOTHER AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR, FROM AUSTRALIA, WHERE HE HAS LIVED OVER 40 YEARS. HE LIVED MOST OF THOSE YEARS IN SYDNEY AND WAS IN THE MEN'S CLOTHING BUSINESS.
NOW HE LIVES ON THE GOLD COAST AND IS A PART TIME CONSULTANT AND
IS DIVORCED. HIS BROTHER GARY DIED ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO. AVERLE HAD JUST THOSE 2 SONS. HER BROTHER, LARRY HAGAR, IS 91 AND
LIVES IN MARSHALLTOWN WITH HIS WIFE ALICE. LARRY WAS A MAQUOKETA SIGN PAINTER ALL HIS LIFE.
HAVE A GOOD WEDNESDAY.
