ONE OF MAQUOKETA'S HISTORICAL BUILDINGS HAS A NEW OWNER. THE AMERICAN LEGION BUILDING AT THE CORNER OF MAIN AND PLATT HAS BEEN SOLD BY THE TIMBER CITY AMERICAN LEGION POST TO STEVE MOREHEAD, OWNER OF CIRCLE M AUCTION AND CIRCLE M GREENHOUSE IN MAQUOKETA.
MOREHEAD SAID THEY CLOSED THE REAL ESTATE TRANSACTION LAST WEEK. THE BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1921 FOR THE AMERICAN SAVINGS BANK. THE BANK OPERATED FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS UNTIL THE DEPRESSION. THE AMERICAN LEGION BOUGHT THE BUILDING IN 1935. THEY USED THE UPSTAIRS AND A BAR WAS LOCATED IN THE BASEMENT. THE STREET LEVEL PORTION OF THE BUILDING HAS HAD NUMEROUS RENTERS OVER THE YEARS. MOREHEAD SAID HE WILL CONTINUE TO RENT THE RETAIL PORTION OF THE BUILDING. THE REPUBLICAN CENTRAL COMMITTEE WILL BE MOVING IN SOON TO USE THE BUILDING AS THERE HEADQUARTERS UNTIL THE NOVEMBER ELECTION. MOREHEAD SAID HE IS
NOT SURE HOW HE WILL USE THE BASEMENT AND AT THIS TIME IS GIVING SOME CONSIDERATION TO USING THE UPSTAIRS AS LIVING QUARTERS FOR HIS FAMILY. THE BUILDING IS 35 BY 100 FEET ON ALL 3 LEVELS. ANYONE INTERESTED IN RENTING THE BUILDING SHOULD CONTACT STEVE MOREHEAD AT 652-9780. STEVE CALLED THE BUILDING A NEAT OLD BUILDING WITH A GREAT LOCATION.
