SUNNY AND NICE TODAY...HIGH OF 41.
SNOW TONIGHT AND TOMORROW MORNING(AROUND AND INCH TOTAL), BUT THEN MORE SUNSHINE TOMORROW AFTERNOON WITH A HIGH NEAR 40 AND THE SNOW WILL ALL AGAIN DISAPPEAR.
THE MAQUOKETA CARDINALS HOST DUBUQUE WAHLERT TONIGHT AT 7 PM IN
3-A TOURNAMENT BASKETBALL PLAY. MAQUOKETA, 16 AND 5 AND WAHLERT, 9 AND 11, BUT KEEP IN MIND THAT WAHLERT IS IN A 4-A LEAGUE. LAST DECEMBER 20TH, THE CARDS DEFEATED WAHLERT, ALSO HERE, IN OVERTIME, 59-56.
SO, IT WILL BE A HECK OF A GAME TONIGHT. MATT CLARK WILL BE THERE
TO BROADCAST THE GAME ON KMAQ AM-FM AND OUR INTERNET SITE, STARTING AROUND 6:50 TONIGHT.
GO CARDS!
ALSO TONIGHT, THE BELLEVUE COMET GIRLS (RANKED 14TH IN THE STATE) PLAY UNRANKED CENTRAL LEE IN IOWA CITY AND THE WINNER GOES TO THE
STATE TOURNAMENT. THE LAST TIME BELLEVUE WAS AT STATE WAS IN 1999.\
FOUR OF THE SIX WRESTLERS FROM THE KMAQ AREA THAT WRESTLED IN THE
STATE TOURNAMENT LAST WEEK, CAME HOME WITH A MEDAL. PAUL KOOB
OF MAQUOKETA DID THE BROADCAST OF ALL THEIR MATCHES ON KMAQ.
TWO WERE FROM MIDLAND, WYOMING....ONE FROM DEWITT CENTRAL AND ONE
FROM NORTH CEDAR. THE TWO OTHERS, FROM NORTHEAST IN GOOSELAKE,
BOTH LOST THEIR OPENING MATCH AND WERE THEN IMMEDIATELY OUT
OF THE TOURNAMENT. AS ALWAYS, DR. KOOB DID A GREAT JOB! THERE
WAS NO MAQUOKETA CARDINAL AT THE TOURNAMENT THIS YEAR.
ONE MORE NOTE FROM THE STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENT. DO YOU REMEMBER CARL RYAN? HE WAS A LONGTIME MAQUOKETA BARBER (MY BARBER) WHO DIED EARLY IN LIFE OVER 10 YEARS AGO. AND HIS WIFE JOAN WORKED AT THE HOSPITAL FOR MANY YEARS AND SHE DIED A COUPLE YEARS AGO. THEIR SON, SHAWN, WAS A GOOD WRESTLER AT MCHS AND HIS FAMILY LIVES IN BETTENDORF. WELL, THIS PAST WEEKEND, HIS TWO SONS WERE IN THE STATE TOURNAMENT AND THE YOUNGEST, LOGAN, TOOK 5TH PLACE WITH 3-A BETTENDORF AT 132 POUNDS. HE IS JUST A SOPHOMORE. THE OTHER GRANDSON OF CARL AND JOAN, SENIOR CONNOR, DREW A VERY TOUCH OPPONENT AND WAS DEFEATED 10 TO 4 AND TOOK SECOND PLACE AT STATE AT 170 POUNDS. CARL AND JOAN WOULD BE HAPPY AND PROUD TODAY.
ONE MAN WAS INJURED AND TWO WERE CHARGED FOLLOWING A FIGHT AT
THE LAZY J MOTEL LAST NIGHT. THE LAZY J ON WEST PLATT STREET, IS NO LONGER A MOTEL, BUT THE SIGN IS STILL USED AND NOW IT HAS ABOUT 10 APARTMENTS. POLICE WERE CALLED AT 10:45 LAST NIGHT AND THE AMBULANCE WAS ALSO CALLED. DEPUTY CHAD GRUVER SAID WESLEY
BRUNDAGE, AGE 23, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS CHARGED WITH SERIOUS ASSAULT
AND PUBLIC INTOXICATION. ALSO, EVERETT CLARK, AGE 33, OF MAQUOKETA
WAS ARRESTED FOR PUBLIC INTOXICATION. BRUNDAGE TOLD OFFICERS THAT TIM RABINEAU CALLED BOTH BRUNDAGE AND CLARK TO MEET HIM
AT THE LAZY J FOR A FIGHT. BOTH MEN WENT TO THE LOCATION AND THE
FIGHT ENSUED. RABINEAU WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL BY AMBULANCE
WITH MULTIPLE FACIAL INJURIES AND A BROKEN NOSE. CLARK'S
BLOOD ALCOHOL LEVEL REGISTERED .271 AND BRUNDAGE LEVEL REGISTERED
.157. THERE WAS AN OUTSTANDING WARRANT FOR BRUNDAGE FOR A SEPARATE ASSAULT CHARGE. THAT ASSAULT HAPPENED FEBRUARY 8TH AT SOUTH NIAGARA STREET AND THE VICTIM SAID BRUNDAGE HIT HIM IN THE HEAD WITH A BEER BOTTLE.
CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT. THEY WILL TALK ABOUT DEMOLITION
WORK AT THE OLD POOL SITE.
THEY WILL HEAR AN UPDATE ON THE NEW LIGHTING PROJECT IN THE CITY.
ALSO, THERE WILL BE TALK ABOUT THE BUDGET AND LITTLE BEAR PARK.
THE MAQUOKETA CAVES (INSIDE THE STATE PARK) WILL BE OPEN TO VISITORS THIS YEAR (THEY WERE CLOSED THE LAST TWO YEARS) BUT THERE WILL BE A
SCREENING PROCESS AND SOMEONE WILL BE HIRED TO IMPLEMENT
THE SCREENING. THOSE SCREENED WILL BE GIVEN A NON-TRANSFERABLE
WRIST BAND WHICH WILL PERMIT ACCESS TO THE CAVES. THIS NECESSARY
BECAUSE OF THE POTENTIAL FOR WHITE NOSE SYNDROME FOR BATS, A FUNGUS
THAT HAS BEEN FOUND IN CAVES IN THE MIDWEST, BUT NOT AT THE
MAQUOKETA STATE PARK. AND VISITS TO THE CAVES, STARTING IN APRIL,
WILL END OCTOBER 1ST WHEN THE CAVES WILL BE CLOSED DURING THE
HIBERNATION SEASON. MY GUESS IS THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE BETTER
THAN THE PAST TWO YEARS, BUT NOTHING LIKE IN THE YEARS BEFOR, AND FOR
A SHORTER PERIOD OF TIME. MANY PEOPLE WILL SKIP THE CAVES BECAUSE OF THE SCREENING, I BELIEVE.
THANKS FOR THE VISIT.
DON'T FORGET TO LOOK AT THE PHOTOS BELOW, INCLUDING THE PHOTOS
I TOOK SATURDAY AT THE MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM.... OF THE 3-WHEELER USED FOR MANY YEARS BY THE MAQUOKETA POLICE DEPARTMENT.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK.
REMEMBER THE GAME TONIGHT AT 6:50 HERE ON THE KMAQ WEB SITE
OR ON KMAQ AM AND FM.
