THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB MEETS AT NOON EVERY WEDNESDAY AT THE
EAGLES CLUB. THIS SERVICE CLUB WILL CELEBRATE IT'S 75TH ANNIVERSARY IN MAQUOKETA NEXT YEAR. IN ROTARY, THE HIGHEST LOCAL HONOR IS
TO BE A "PAUL HARRIS FELLOW", NAMED AFTER THE FOUNDER OF ROTARY.
SHOWN HERE IN THE CENTER IS ROTARIAN ASHER SCHROEDER, WHO IS A
LONGTIME MEMBER OF ROTARY....IS OUR (I'M A MEMBER TOO) CLUB TREASURER AND IS A "PAUL HARRIS FELLOW". THIS PAST CHRISTMAS, HIS
FAMILY DECIDED TO CONTRIBUTE MORE TO THE FELLOWSHIP ON BEHALF
OF ASHER AND MADE HIM A "PAUL HARRIS FELLOW PLUS 1". SO, TODAY,
WAS MORE OR LESS ASHER SCHROEDER DAY AT ROTARY, AS PRESENT FOR THE MEETING WERE HIS 3 SONS AND SISTER-IN-LAW SALLY SCHROEDER, SHOWN PINNING THE NEW PIN ON ASHER. SALLY, MARRIED TO OLDEST SON BILL, IS AN RN AND THEY LIVE IN ANKENY AND SHE IS A MEMBER OF THE ANKENY ROTARY CLUB. ALSO PRESENT WAS YOUNGER SON JOHN OF SIGOURNEY AND YOUNGEST SON DAVID OF DUBUQUE. ASHER IS RETIRED AS ASSISTANT UNITED STATES ATTORNEY FOR THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF IOWA, SINCE
1987. HE HAS LIVED IN MAQUOKETA SINCE RETIREMENT (HIS WIFE CATHERINE IS NO LONGER LIVING) AND HAS BEEN ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY IN MANY
WAYS, INCLUDING SERVING AS PRESIDENT OF THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETYK. ASHER AND FELLOW ROTARIAN BRIG. GEN. CHARLES
MITCHELL WERE THE TWO MAIN FORCES IN ESTABLISHING THE CLINTON ENGINES MUSEUM HERE IN MAQUOKETA. ASHER SERVED IN WORLD WAR II
WITH THE 4TH INFANTRY DIVISION AND WAS WOUNDED AND TAKEN PRISONER OF WAR IN GERMANY. I LIKE ASHER A LOT.......AND ENJOY ATTENDING ROTARY
WITH HIM. HE'S A DARNED GOOD MAN.
ANOTHER GOOD MAN IN THIS PHOTO (AT LEFT) IS FELLOW ROTARIAN CLYDE
HARPER, MAQUOKETA BUSINESSMAN. MORE ON HIM ANOTHER TIME.
