OVER AN INCH OF RAIN FOR MAQUOKETA THIS MORNING. SUNNY THIS
AFTERNOON AND HIGH IN THE MID 80'S.

JACKSON COUNTY ENGINEER CLARK SCHLOZ SAID JACKSON COUNTY HAD SOME
PAVEMENT BLOW UPS, BUT NOTHING SEVERE THIS WEEK DURING THE
EXTREME HEAT. THIS WEEK'S HEAT SPELL IS THE BIGGEST IN NEARLY
20 YEARS AROUND HERE. I HEARD YESTERDAY, THAT JACKSON COUNTY
LOST AROUND 100 HEAD OF CATTLE THIS WEEK BECAUSE OF THE HEAT.
COOLER WEATHER IS COMING MONDAY.

THE ROBBERY TRIAL INVOLVING THE ROBBERY LAST YEAR AT THE ANDREW
BANK IS SCHEDULED TO START HERE MONDAY, AUGUST 15TH. A MILWAUKEE
MAN (AGE 31) IS SCHEDULED TO STAND TRIAL. HE REMAINS IN THE JACKSON
COUNTY DETENTION CENTER ON $150,000 CASH BOND. HE AND ANOTHER
MAN LAST SEPTEMBER TOOK $45,000, WHICH HAS NOT BEEN RECOVERED.
JACKSON COUNTY AUTHORITIES ARE STILL SEARCHING FOR THE OTHER
MAN WHO APPEARS IN A BANK VIDEO OF THE ROBBERY.

NO ONE HAS FILED PAPERS YET FOR THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD.
THE DEADLINE IS AUGUST 4TH. CURRENT BOARD MEMBERS ANNE HAWKS
AND BILL SCHWENKER SAID THEY WILLL NOT SEEK RE-ELECTION. MARK
PAPE SAID HE HAS NOT DECIDED. FIFITY SIGNATURES ARE NEEDED.

THERE WERE SOME FUNDS LEFT OVER AFTER PAYING EXPENSES FOR THE
VIETNAM MOVING WALL WHICH CAME TO MAQUOKETA IN JUNE.
RON HORAN, HEAD ORGANIZER, SAID THEY DECIDED TO DONATE BETWEEN
$400 AND $500 EACH TO TWO WORLD WAR 2 HONOR FLIGHTS OUT OF
DUBUQUE AND DAVENPORT AND THE SAME AMOUNT WILL BE GIVEN TO RIVER
BEND TROOP SUPPORT. JEANNIE FLAGEL OF BALDWIN HAS BEEN SENDING
PACKAGES TO TROOPS OVERSEAS FOR MANY YEARS.

ON THE POLICE BLOTTER: ALICE THOMA ON THE HIGH BRIDGE ROAD REPORTED YESTERDAY THAT SOMEONE HAD DRAINED THE GASOLINE
FROM THEIR BARREL OVERNIGHT.
TOM SCHUELLER ON WEST PLATT IN MAQUOKETA REPORTED YESTERDAY
THAT SOMEONE TOOK A PAN OF FISH AND ALCOHOL FROM HIS RESIDENCE.
RYAN HELTON ON SOUTH VERMONT SAID LAST NIGHT THAT SOMEONE
SHOT HIS VEHICLE WITH A PAINTBALL GUN.

WELL KNOWN RETIRED FARMER AND HISTORIAN ERGON PENNINGROTH
DIED LAST NIGHT AT HIS HOME, AT THE AGE OF 90. STILL HAD A GOOD MIND,
BUT HIS BODY GAVE OUT. WAS A FRIEND FOR MANY YEARS AND GOOD
KMAQ LISTENER. WAS ACTIVE OVER THE YEARS WITH THE JACKSON
COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY. FARMED NEAR ELWOOD UNTIL RETIREMENT.
WAS A LOCAL AUTHORITY ON THE HOT HOT SUMMER OF 1936 IN MAQUOKETA.
HAD MANY INTERESTING VISITS WITH HIM. ARRANGEMENTS ARE PENDING
AT CARSON'S.

THE PRESTON GIRLS LOST THEIR SOFTBALL STATE GAME AT FORT DODGE
LAST NIGHT TO THE #1 RATED TEAM AND WILL PLAY FOR 3RD PLACE TONIGHT.
THE PRESTON BOYS PLAY AT STATE MONDAY AFTERNOON AT 2 IN DES MOINES.

THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR STARTS WEDNESDAY. MONDAY, I'LL HAVE THE
NAME OF THE FAIR QUEEN AS SHE WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN A PROGRAM
AT THE FAIRGROUNDS SUNDAY AFTERNOON.'

ONE YEAR AGO....WE HAD THE BIG FLOOD IN EASTERN IOWA THAT BROUGHT
THE JONES COUNTY FAIR TO AN EARLY CLOSE AND RESULTED IN
SANDBAGGING IN MAQUOKETA. THE DAM AT DELHI WAS TAKEN OUT AND
IS STILL OUT.
