ANOTHER SUNNY BUT CHILLY DAY IN THE 50'S.
THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD EXPELLED FOUR STUDENTS UNTIL NEXT MONTH, FOLLOWING CLOSED MEETINGS LAST NIGHT. SUPT. KIM
HUCKSTADT SAID THE STUDENTS WERE EXPELLED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE
TRI-MESTER WHICH IS NOVEMBER 15TH. THE MIDDLE SCHOOL RUNS UNDER A TRI-MESTER SCHEDULE. HUCKSTADT DECLINED TO RELEASE NAMES OR THE
REASON FOR EXPULSION. THE SUPERINTENDENT SAID THE DISTRICT IS COMMITTED TO MAKING THE SCHOOLS A SAFE PLACE FOR ALL STUDENTS AND WILL CONTINUE TO WORK TO THAT END.
THE MAQUOKETA POLICE SAY THEY CHARGED ONE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT WITH POSSESSION OF DRUG PARAPHENALIA. OFFICERS SAY FIVE STUDENTS WERE
FOUND TO HAVE SMOKED MARIJUANA ON SCHOOL GROUNDS. ONLY ONE HAS BEEN CHARGED.
AT THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT, COUNCIL MEMBERS
EXPRESSED CONCERN OVER YOUTH ALLEGEDLY HARASSING PEOPLE AT LITTLE BEAR PARK. ASSISTANT CHIEF CRAIG JACKSON, WHO WAS AT THE MEETING,
AID OFFICERS PATROL THE PARK FREQUENTLY BUT CAN'T BE THERE ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. HE SAID THE ISSUE IS MOSTLY NOT BY TEEN-AGERS, BUT KIDS AGE 6 TO 10 OR SO. JACKSON SAID HE CLOSED THE PARK TWICE LAST WEEK AFTER
DISTURBANCES. MOST OF THE TIME, THE PROBLEM IS DURING THE AFTERNOON AFTER SCHOOL. JACKSON SAID HE HAS TALKED TO PARENTS OF THE CHILDREN
INVOLVED, BUT IS GETTING NO COOPERATION FROM THEM.
GILBERT WULF, AGE 78, OF BETTENDORF AND FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA, DIED SUNDAY AT A HOSPICE HOUSE N BETTENDORF. AT ONE TIME, HE WORKED
AS A TOOL AND DIE MAKER AT CLINTON ENGINES. ALSO FARMED IN JACKSON COUNTY. HE IS SURVIVED BY THREE CHILDREN WHO DO NOT LIVE IN THIS
AREA.
BILL AND JUNE URBANEK WERE IN MAQUOKETA FOR A VISIT LAST WEEK AND
I RAN INTO THEM WHEN AT COFFEE AT McDONALDS. BILL, WHO WAS IN
ROTARY WITH ME, RETIRED OVER 20 YEARS AGO AS SUPERINTENDENT OF
THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT. ABOUT 6 YEARS AGO,
HE MOVED TO GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA, WHERE MOST OF HIS FAMILY IS
LOCATED. BOTH LOOKED GOOD AND ARE ENJOYING RETIREMENT.

ZUMBA IS POPULAR HERE IN MAQUOKETA TOO. CLASSES WEEKLY IN THE
UPSTAIRS FORMER LEGION HEADQUARTERS ON THE CORNER OF MAIN AND PLATT, DOWNTOWN.
