MOSTLY SUNNY AND HOT TODAY....IN THE LOW 80'S.

GOV. CHET CULVER WAS IN THE AREA AGAIN THIS AFTERNOON. JOE
HEINRICH HAS A CORN ACREAGE ALONG THE MAQUOKETA RIVER NORTHWEST OF MAQUOKETA, ABOUT 170 ACRES, AND THE GOVERNOR MET WITH FARMERS AT THAT CORNFIELD AND EXPLAINED THE HELP THAT WILL BE AVAILABLE TO THOSE FARMERS THAT SUFFERED CROP DAMAGE FROM THE FLOOD.

AND..THE GOVERNOR DECIDED TO STAY IN MAQUOKETA FOR THE FAIR PARADE
AT 6 TONIGHT. HE'LL BE WITH THE PARADE ENTRY OF THE JACKSON COUNTY DEMOCRATS.

A MAQUOKETA 8TH GRADER, MONMOUTH 4-H MEMBER, CALE GENT, SON OF MR.
AND MRS. SCOTT GENT, RESTORED AN "H" TRACTOR LAST YEAR FOR A 4-H
PROJECT AND IT WENT ON TO THE STATE FAIR. THIS YEAR, HE RESTORED
ANOTHER, A JOHN DEERE "A", AND IT TOO WILL GO TO THE STATE FAIR NEXT MONTH. BOTH WILL BE ON A FLATBED IN THE FAIR PARADE TONIGHT.
CALE WILL BE RIDING ON THE FLATBED, PULLED BY HIS GRANDFATHER,
STEVE TRENKAMP OF PRESTON. AND HERE'S ONE MORE THING ABOUT THE
TRACTORS. BOTH WERE OWNED BY CALE'S GREAT-GRANDFATHERS. THE
JOHN DEERE "A" BELONGED TO BERNARD TRENKAMP OF PRESTON AND THE
INTERNATIONAL "H" WAS OWNED BY THE LATE PAUL TEEPLE.
QUITE A THING FOR AN 8TH GRADER TO RESTORE A TRACTOR TWO YEARS
IN A ROW AND BOTH YEARS, HAVE THE TRACTOR GO ON TO THE STATE
FAIR. IF YOU ATTEND THE FAIR THIS WEEKEND IN MAQUOKETA, SEE A CLOSE-UP OF THE JOHN DEERE INSIDE THE PEARSON CENTER AT THE FAIR,
ALONG WITH OTHER 4-H PROJECTS.

THE FAIR BOARD WILL BE HANDING OUT GARBAGE BAGS ALONG THE PARADE ROUTE TONIGHT. LANNY SIMPSON, FAIR MANAGER, SAID IT IS HOPED PARADE WATCHERS WILL DISPOSE OF THEIR GARBAGE AFTER THE PARADE.
SHE SAYS THE FAIR BOARD THIS YEAR IS DOING THEIR BEST TO ASSIST
THE CITY PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT IN CLEAN-UP AFTER THE PARADE.

THE HUNDREDS OF SAND BAGS, FILLED WITH SAND, ARE BEING OFFERED
FREE TO THE PUBLIC.

A MINOR ACCIDENT YESTERDAY IN MAQUOKETA. ONE CAR DRIVEN
BY JOHN SHEEHAN, AGE 73,OF MAQUOKETA. THE OTHER DRIVEN BY
RONDA PAPE, AGE 52, OF MAQUOKETA. JOHN WAS GOING SOUTH ON MAIN AND RHONDA WAS ON PLEASANT STREET AND FAILED TO STOP AT THE LIGHT AND THE TWO VEHICLES COLLIDED. PAPE WAS CHARGED. NO INJURIES.
THAT WAS AT 10 LAST NIGHT.

AT 3 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, DAWN DURKOP, 29, OF MAQUOKETA WAS CHARGED WITH STOP SIGN VIOLATION. MEGAN FIELDS, AGE 16, WAS DRIVING ON NIAGARA, DURKOP DIDN'T STOP AND HIT THE FIELDS VEHICLE. NO

The 170 acre farmground that Gov Culver visited yesterday is ours (Joe rents a portion of the tillable) and the bottom 20 acres that were flooded didn't just affect Joe's corn - about half of that 20 was our alfalfa. The floodwaters were absolutely amazing this time around, just as they were in 2008. 2008 was almost worse though because of the amount of sand we had to get bulldozed off. That's where the high cost comes in. No complaints here though - that's the risk all farmers take when we plant bottomland.
