WOW...WHAT A STORM.    NOT QUITE AS MUCH SNOW AS PREDICTED...BUT AS
OF LATE THIS AFTERNOON, 8 INCHES.    IT WAS  HEAVY, WET SNOW.
THEN IT GOT COLD THIS AFTERNOON AND THE SNOW IS BLOWING.    THE
ROADS IN COUNTRY ARE BAD.     STREETS IN TOWN PRETTY GOOD.    NOW..
COLD WEATHER FOR REST OF WEEK....LIKE BELOW ZERO TONIGHT.
NO SCHOOL TODAY AND LOTS OF CLOSINGS AND CANCELLATIONS.

HELEN AND LEROY STAMPE OF 1405 SWAGOS DRIVE IN MAQUOKETA WILL
CELEBRATE THEIR 70TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY TOMORROW.  LEROY FARMED IN THE WELTON AREA AND WAS A SEED SALESMAN AND HELEN WORKED
AT SKEFFINGTON'S JACK AND JILL.   THEY HAVE 3 CHILDREN, 4 GRANDCHILDREN
AND 6 GREAT GRANDCHILDREN.    HAPPY 70TH TO HELEN AND LEROY!

ONE OF THE 4 PEOPLE THAT STARTED THE 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE JUST SOUTH OF MAQUOKETA IN 1950, DIED NOVEMBER 17TH IN NORTH CAROLINA.     BETTY FRANKLIN, AGE 87, DIED FROM ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE.    A VISITATION IS PLANNED FOR MAY NEXT YEAR AT CARSON FUNERAL HOME IN MAQUOKETA WITH A GRAVESIDE SERVICE AT MT. HOPE CEMETERY IN MAQUOKETA.   BETTY  AND
HER HUSBAND DICK OWNED THE FARM LAND WHERE THE DRIVE-IN WAS
BUILDT.    THE COUPLE ALSO HAD AS PARTNERS IN THE VENTURE, MR. AND
MRS. WALT ALLEN.    I BELIEVE THE FOUR RAN THE OUTDOOR THEATRE FOR
ABOUT 10 YEARS.    WALT ALLEN WAS A THEATREMAN IN THE 40'S, AND LATER
ALSO OWNED THEATRES IN THE QUAD CITIES.     DICK FRANKLIN I THINK IS THE
ONLY ONE OF THE 4 NOW LIVING, IN THE DES MOINES AREA.     HE AND
BETTY WERE DIVORCED MANY YEARS AGO.     THEY HAD 4 CHILDREN.
THREE DAUGHTERS ARE SURVIVORS:  BARBARA IN ILLINOIS, CATHY IN
MISSOURI AND PAM IN NORTH CAROLINA.   BETTY WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY A SON, ROBERT.     BETTY RETIRED AS OWNER-OPERATOR OF IOWA CONCRETE PRODUCTS IN MAQUOKETA.    SHE LIVED IN MAQUOKETA UNTIL 2000.

LORI  WAUGH, AGE 46, OF MAQUOKETA WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT MONDAY MORNING ON HIGHWAY 61 IN CLINTON COUNTY.  SHE LOST CONTROL OF HER VEHICLE ON AN  ICY ROAD.    THE CAR ROLLED AND LANDED ON ITS WHEELS IN A BEAN FIELD.    A PASSENGER, JOANN MILLER, AGE 63, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS TAKEN TO THE DEWITT HOSPITAL WITH MINOR INJURIES.  DAMAGES WERE LISTED AT $15,000 TO HER 2005 GMC.

LOOKS LIKE THE CONTRACT TO CLEAN-UP DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA'S FIRE
MESS WILL BE LET SOMETIME IN JANUARY AND THE CLEAN-UP WORK COULD
TAKE AS MUCH AS TWO WEEKS.   THAT WAS WORD YESTERDAY AT A PUBLIC
MEETING AT CITY HALL.    THE 2ND ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRE IS JANUARY 19TH.

A BIRTH:   DR. LUCAS WENDEL AND DR. AMANDA BISHOP OF IOWA CITY, ARE PARENTS OF A GIRL BORN  YESTERDAY AT UNIVERSITY OF IOWA HOSPITALS
AND CLINICS.    PATERNAL GRANDPARENTS ARE ROSE AND CHUCK WENDEL
OF MAQUOKETA.

DO FORMER MAQUOKETANS REALLY LIVE IN FLORIDA OR ARIZONA?
WONDER WHY?

HAVE A GOOD WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY.

DENNIS VOY
