BIG ECONOMIC NEWS TODAY!!!
THE GOVERNOR IS COMING TO DUBUQUE THIS MORNING FOR A 10:30 NEWS CONFERENCE, TO BE WITH DUBUQUE OFFICIALS WHEN THEY ANNOUNCE THAT IBM WILL COME TO DUBUQUE THIS SUMMER AND HIRE 1,300 WITHIN A YEAR.
IT EVENTUALLY WILL BE IBM'S LARGEST FACILITY. AVERAGE PAY, $45,000.
THEY WILL REMODEL THE DOWNTOWN DUBUQUE BUILDING AND HAVE HEADQUARTERS THERE. THIS WILL MEAN A LOT TO JACKSON COUNTY OF COURSE, ESPECIALLY FOR HOUSING. AND ESPECIALLY BELLEVUE, JUST DOWN HIGHWAY 52 FROM DUBUQUE. FOR MORE ABOUT THIS STORY, GO TO THE
TH WEB SITE. UNBELIEVABLE GOOD NEWS WHEN WE NEED IT MOST.
I KNEW WEEKS AGO IT WAS IN THE WORKS AND MIGHT BE ANNOUNCED JANURAY 19TH, BUT THE ANNOUNCEMENT COMING EARLY....TODAY.
AND ALSO THIS YEAR, TO BENEFIT JACKSON AND CLINTON COUNTIES, THE OPENING
FINIALLY OF THE NEW STATE PRISON AT THOMSOM, NEAR SAVANNA. IT WILL
HIRE OVER 500 PEOPLE.
THE BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA THAT FOR MANY YEARS THE LOCATION OF THE WESTERN AUTO STORE, HAS BEEN SOLD TO AN ILLINOIS BUSINESS, WHICH WILL MOVE THAT BUSINESS FROM ILLINOIS TO DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA. SORRY I DON'T HAVE MORE INFORMATION NOW. THE ART WORKSHOPS HAVE BEEN AT THAT LOCATION THE LAST YEAR AND WILL HAVE TO LOOK FOR A NEW LOCATION.
MORE LATER.
MIKE KOLL, MANAGER OF THE FAREWAY STORE IN MAQUOKETA THE PAST 10 YEARS, SPOKE AT ROTARY YESTERDAY AND REPORTED THAT THE STORE IS DOING GREAT AT THE NEW LOCATION, OFFERING MORE THAN MOST FAREWAY STORES IN THE CHAIN. HE THINKS IT IS NOW THE BEST LOOKING STORE IN THE CHAIN THAT STARTED IN THE 30'S. HE HAS BEEN WITH FAREWAY FOR 31 YEARS.
THEY ARE NOW EMPLOYING MORE...10-15....THAN WORKED AT THE OLD DOWNTOWN LOCATION. THE OLD STORE IS EMPTY AND FOR SALE.
HAVE A GOOD THURSDAY!
DENNIS VOY
