MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE STARTED A CLUB THROUGH THE OPRAH WINFREY AMBASSADOR PROGRAM. CLUB HOPE HAS BEEN ORGANIZED BY
HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER MELINDA ORRIS. IT IS TO HELP STUDENTS BECOME GLOBAL CITIZENS WHO ARE AWARE OF PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES OTHER KIDS ARE FACING THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. CLUB HOPE IN MAQUOKETA HAS
BEEN GIVEN THE ....CORE AREA OF FOCUS....OF EAST AFRICA. THEIR FIRST LOCAL PROJECT WILL BE A DOOR TO DOOR EVENT THIS SUNDAY AFTERNOON COLLECTING NON-PERISHABLE GOODS AND PAPER PRODUCTS FOR THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY CUPBOARD. AND MANY OTHER PROJECTS ARE PLANNED.
THE 26TH ANNUAL MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING DINNER WILL BE SERVED TWO WEEKS FROM TODAY , AT 12 NOON, AT THE SENIOR MEAL SITE.
LAST YEAR, OVER 160 MEALS WERE SERVED. MARILYN RANKIN AND SHEILA BENTLY ARE CO-CHAIR. NO COST, BUT FREE WILL DONATION WILL BE ACCEPTED.
HARVEST SEASON...AND MATING SEASON...AND DEER ARE EVERYWHERE AND ARE BEING HIT IN NEAR RECORD NUMBERS. JOHN DAGUE OF MAQUOKETA RAN INTO ONE MONDAY AFTERNOON. DON'T SWERVE TO MISS ONE AND HAVE A MAJOR ACCIDENT.....HOLD ON TIGHT TO YOUR STEERING WHEEL AND KEEP ON THE ROAD.

THE JACKSON COUNTY CREWS ARE READY WITH SALT AND PLOWS FOR THE FIRST
BIG SNOWFALL. THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR 610 MILES OF GRAVEL ROADS IN JACKSON COUNTY AND 175 MILES OF SECONDARY PAVED ROADS.
HOUSE FIRE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT THE JULIE SCHVIEGER RESIDENCE AT 509 WEST QUARRY STREET. THE STOVE RANGE HOOD CAUGHT ON FIRE AND
JULIE PUT IT OUT BEFORE FIREMEN ARRIVED, USING A FIRE EXTINGUISHER.
THE HOOD WAD DESTROYED.
SO FAR, FOUR PEOPLE HAVE FILED PAPERS TO BE ON THE BALLOT FOR THE SPECIAL ELECTION FOR A FIRST WARD COUNCIL MEMBER IN MAQUOKETA. THEY ARE:
LORI CROUCH, ED TURNEY, DAVE WIERSMA AND DEB WILHELM. THE ELECTION WILL BE ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 16TH AND ONLY FIRST WARD RESIDENTS WILL VOTE. STILL TIME FOR MORE TO FILE PAPERS. THE DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 20.
WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT LAST JANUARY 19TH, THAT THE DOWNTOWN FIRE MESS WOULD STILL BE AROUND FOR CHRISTMAS. DOWNTOWN CITY
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS ARE GOING UP ON THE BIG TREES, BEING PUT UP AGAIN
THIS YEAR BY MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC UTILITY WORKERS.
THE LIGHTS WILL HELP ... SO WILL SOME SNOW ... BUT.....
THERE ARE PEOPLE TO BLAME...BUT WHY.....IT'S HOLIDAY TIME...TIME TO BE
JOLLY. AND TWO WEEKS FROM TODAY...TIME TO BE THANKFUL...THANKFUL FOR THE GREAT COMMUNITY OF MAQUOKETA. MY HOME FOR 50 YEARS. FOR OME OF YOU MORE YEARS...SOME LESS. AND MANY, YOUR HOME OF PLEASANT MEMORIES.
