LAST NIGHT, THE DEWITT BOYS DEFEATED MAQUOKETA,

54 TO 45, AT DEWITT.

HERE IN MAQUOKETA, THE DEWITT GIRLS DEFEATED

MAQUOKETA, 53 TO 29.



DORIS SHIMANEK HAS BEQUEATHED $130,165.46 TO THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR THE PURPOSE OF ESTABLISHING THE DORIS SHIMANEK SCHOLARSHIP FUND.

DORIS WAS BORN IN MINNEAPOLIS ON EASTER SUNDAY, MARCH 31, 1928 AND DELIVERED BY HER FATHER BECAUSE THE DOCTOR COULD NOT MAKE IT IN TIME DUE TO A SNOWSTORM.

SHE GOT HER RN DEGREE IN 1940. SHE MARRIED WILLIAM SHIMANEK ON JULY 4, 1959 AND THEY RESIDED IN OXFORD JUNCTION WHERE HE WAS AN INSURANCE AGENT AND SHE WORKED AT THE MAQUOKETA HOSPITAL IN THE 60'S AS A

REGISTERED NURSE. HE DIED IN 1981 AND SHE RETIRED

IN 1985. IN 2000 SHE SOLD THEIR HOME IN OJ AND MOVED TO OAKNOLL IN IOWA CITY IN 2000. SHE DIED LAST APRIL AFTER A BATTLE WITH COLON CANCER. OVER A YEAR AGO, SHE STOPPED IN TO TALK TO SUPT. KIM HUCKSTADT AND EXPRESSED INTEREST IN LEAVING SOME MONEY TO THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL DISTRICT. HE EXPLAINED WHAT SHE COULD DO. KIM NEVER HEARD FROM HEAR AGAIN. SHE ALSO GAVE TO CORNELL COLLEGE, THE OJ SENIOR CENTER, THE OJ FIRE DEPARTMENT, AND TO FOUR OAKS IN CEDAR RAPIDS. THIS IS THE LARGEST BEQUEATH THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS EVER RECEIVED. FOUR OR FIVE STUDENTS A YEAR WILL RECEIVE A SCHOLARSHIP, USING JUST THE INTEREST OF HER GIFT.
