THE WEATHER WAS BEAUTIFUL HERE FOR CHRISTMAS DAY.
CLOSE TO 40. TODAY, PRETTY NICE TOO.

BREITBACH'S COUNTRY DINING CONTINUES TO MAKE THE
NEWS. THE OWNER SAYS HE WILL REBUILD AND HOPES TO
RE-OPEN IN MAY. ABOUT 500 CARS PASSED BY THE BURNED OUT STRUCTURE ON CHRISTMAS DAY. THE CAUSE OF THE FAMILY LIKELY BEGAN WITH AN LP GAS LEAK. A FEW THINGS WERE SAVED, INCLUDING A SIX-FOOT HAND-CARVED CUCKOO-CLOCK FROM GERMANY. A BLANKET LEFT BEHIND BY OUTLAW JESSE JAMES IN THE 1800'S AND THE DEED AND ABSTRACT FROM 1852 WERE DESTROYED. MIKE BREITBACH SAYS HE IS THANKFUL NO ONE WAS HURT.

JIM HESS, AGE 31, OF MAQUOKETA, MATCHED FOUR WHITE BALLS PLUS THE POWERBALL TO WIN $10,000 IN THE DECEMBER 19TH POWEBALL DRAWING. HE PURCHASED HIS WINNING TICKET AT KJ'S CONVENIENCE STORE ON WEST PLATT IN MAQUOKETA.

ON THE POLICE BLOTTER....THE GREAT WALL CHINESE RESTAURANT IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA REPORTED THAT THE WINDOW IN THEIR FRONT DOOR WAS BROKEN.

THE IOWA DNR AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION COMMISSION ARE ACCEPTING COMMENTS ON THEIR PROPOSALS TO CHANGE THE WATER QUALITY LISTINGS FOR RIVERS AND STREAMS ACROSS THE STATE. IN JACKSON COUNTY, THEY ARE LOOKING TO CHANGE THE NORTH FORK OF THE MAQUOKETA RIVER AND DEEP CREEK BOTH TO A2, A LOWER CLASSIFICATION. THE A2 LOWER CLASSIFICATION IS FOR STREAMS NOT IN NEED OF PROTECTION TO KEEP THEM SUITABLE FOR HUMAN RECREATIONAL USES. BOTH THE NORTH FORK AND DEEP CREEK ARE ON THE LIST FOR A LOWER CLASSIFICATION BASICALLY BECAUSE THE DNR HAS NO RECORD OF COMMENTS THAT PEOPLE USE THESE TWO STREAMS FOR RECREATION. THE NORTH FORK IS JUST UNDER 70 MILES LONG AND DEEP CREEK IS JUST OVER 8 MILES LONG, AND
LOCAL CITIZENS ARE UPSET ABOUT THE PROPOSAL BECAUSE CONTRARY TO DNR RECORDS, THE NORTH FORK OF THE RIVER IS USED FOR CANOEING, TUBING, FISHING, AND OTHER RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES. IF THE RIVER IS DESIGNATED
TO A LOWER CLASSIFICATION, THE RIVER WILL BE OFF LIMITS
TO ALL RECEATIONAL ACTIVITIES. PUBLIC COMMENTS
ARE WELCOME, AND THE DEADLINE FOR COMMENTS IS
JANUARY 2ND. THERE IS A QUESTIONAIRE THE PUBLIC
CAN FILL OUT AND RETURN TO THE DNR HEADQUARTERS
IN DES MOINES. ANYONE WANTING TO FILL OUT THE QUESTIONAIRE CAN PICK ONE UP HERE AT KMAQ. BUT
AGAIN, IT MUST BE E-MAILED OR POSTMARKED NO LATER
THAN JANUARY 2ND. OTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE
DE-CLASSIFICATION PROCESS IS ALSO AVAILABLE HERE AT KMAQ LISTENERS ARE NOT TO CONFUSE THIS PROPOSAL WITH THE ENTIRE MAQUOKETA RIVER. THE MAQUOKETA RIVER SOUTH FORK IS NOT BEING CONSIDERED FOR RE-CLASSIFICATION, JUST THE SMALLER NORTH FORK. AND ALSO DEEP CREEK IN JACKSON COUNTY. ALSO ON THE LIST OF STREAMS SCHEDULED FOR RECREATIONAL OR AQUATIC LIFE DOWNGRADES ARE: ELK RIVER AND YANKEE RUN IN CLINTON COUNTY, ROCK CREEK AND SUGAR CREEK IN CEDAR COUNTY,
AND TWO SEGMENTS OF BUFFALO CREEK IN JONES COUNTY.

THANKS FOR CHECKING IN AGAIN.

4/10ths of an inch of rain Saturday afternoon and early evening in Maquoketa. Then the temperature dropped and snow started around
9 P.M. Sunday morning, we had 5 inches of new snow on ground.
We have had 14 inches this month. Sunny today...and tomorrow, Christmas Day will also be nice, with some sunshine and a high
in the mid 30's.

Saturday, I visited my good friend Dale Brooks at the extended care facililty at the hospital. Dale, in his 80's, had a freak auto accident in September...hitting the gas pedal instead of break ...and running into a building in DeWitt and breaking his neck. His wife was along and did not get hurt. The healing is taking a long time, but he should be okay in another couple months and back home. His father-in-law was longtime Maquoketa doctor O.L. Frank. Doc might have delivered some of you.....he brought about 3,000 into the world during his Maquoketa career.

Sage Rosenfels had another decent day as QB of the Houston Texans yesterday, but Indianapolis won the game. Sage threw for two TD's and his passing was good for ever 200 yards.

A good KMAQ advertiser and Iowa's oldest bar and restaurant,
Breitbach's Country Dining at Balltown, north of Dubuque, burned to the ground this morning. It opened in 1852. Nancy and I had dinner there a couple times this year, the last time in November. It was not only a good restaurant, it was a tourist attraction. They came from all over to eat at Breitbach's. It had seating for around 250, and
was filled with antiques.

KMAQ has learned that Susanne Baty, of Maquoketa, retired Principal at Cardinal Elementary School, died Friday night. We have had calls here at KMAQ asking about services, but nothing has been released at this time. Survivors include her husband, Corlis.

Many people have left a Christmas greeting on the KMAQ Guest
Book. Check it out. Click on the guest book at www.kmaq.com . Still time to enter one yourself.

MERRY CHRISTMAS from everyone here at KMAQ.

YEARS....AND IN A POSITION WHERE IF WE WANT, WE CAN GO UP AND TALK TO THEM, AND TAKE THEIR PICTURE. IN MOST OTHER STATES....GETTING CLOSE TO A POSIBLE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE.

WYOMING CANCELLED ITS BIG ANNUAL CHRISTMAS ONE-DAY EVENT TODAY AND WILL RE-SCHEDULE.
PRESTON'S SECOND DAY OF THEIR HOLIDAY EVENT CANCELLED
TODAY'S SCHEDULE. THEY STILL HAVE SOME THINGS SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW.
DELMAR WILL HAVE THEIR HOLIDAY EVENT TOMORROW AS SCHEDULED.
THE PEACE PIPE PLAYERS PRODUCTION OF "A CHRITMAS STORY' WAS WELL-ATTENDED LAST NIGHT AND I'VE HEARD SOME GOOD COMMENTS. TONIGHT'S PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN CANCELLED AND THE FINAL PERFORMANCE WILL BE AT 2 TOMORROW AFTERNOON.

THE MAQUOKETA BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM PLAYED HOST LAST NIGHT TO DUBUQUE SENIOR AND LOST 64 TO 55. DILLON O'CONNELL LEAD MAQUOKETA WITH 13 POINTS. MATT BOPES HAD 12 AND DYLAN BARTELS, 11. MAQUOKETA IS NOW 0 AND 2.
THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS PLAYED LAST NIGHT, AWAY, BUT THE COACH DID NOT REPORT THE SCORE TO US...OR TO THE PAPERS, SO I DON'T KNOW HOW THEY DID. WIN OR LOOSE, THE COACH SHOULD REPORT HIS SCORE TO THE MEDIA, BUT MANY DON'T, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY LOOSE. AND THEN THERE ARE COACHES THAT GO THE EXTRA MILE BY GETTING THE SCORE TO US QUICKLY ... SOMETIMES THEY GIVE US MORE INFORMATION THAT WE CAN USE.
MONDAY, I SHOULD HAVE THE GIRL'S SCORE AND ALSO HOW THE WRESTLERS DID TODAY AT CASCADE.

A MILES MAN WAS KILLED IN AN AUTO ACCIDENT JUST NORTH OF MAQUKETA, NEAR HURSTVILLE, AT 8:30 LAST NIGHT.
HE PULLED ONTO HIGHWAY 61 AND WAS STRUCK BY A BETTENDORF CAR GOING NORTH. THAT WAS THE 2ND FATALITY IN NOVEMBER IN THAT AREA. AND THERE HAVE BEEN LOTS OF OTHER ACCIDENTS AT TWO DIFFERENT INTERSECTIONS THERE.

HAVE A GOOD WEEK.
