IOWA GOT A LOT OF RAIN OVER THE WEEKEND.....SOME PLACES NEAR HERE INCLUDED....BUT MAQUOKETA GOT VERY, VERY LITTLE. AND IT WAS HOT AGAIN TODAY....95.....WITH THE PROMISE OF A LITTLE COOLER WEATHER LATER IN THE WEEK. THE RAIN WE GOT CAME BRIEFLY SATURDAY NIGHT.
THERE WERE 77 TEAMS IN THE MAQUOKETA 6TH ANNUAL TIMBER CITY ADVENTURE RACE SATURDAY....DOWN TWO FROM LAST YEAR. THE RIVER WAS LOW AND THAT CUT DOWN "TIMES" IN THE RACE, WHICH INCLUDES A CANOE SEGMENT. THERE WAS A RAFFLE ASSOCIATED WITH IT, SPONSORED BY THE CHAMBER AND THE MAIN $500 PRIZE, A BIKE, WAS WON BY MAQUOKETA POSTMASTER DOUG SWANSON. MANY OF YOU ALSO KNOW HIS DAD, FORMER TEACHER, HAROLD SWANSON.
IN BUSINESS NEWS, THE DEERY FAMILY HAS PURCHASED THE WRIGHT CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP AT CARLISLE, NEAR DES MOINES. OWNERS WILL BE BRAD DEERY OF BURLINGTON , AND TWO COUSINS, DAN DEERY AND JOHN DEERY, JUNIOR OF CEDAR FALLS. THE COUSINS HAVE CAR DEALERSHIPS IN CEDAR FALLS-WATERLOO. BRAD HAS BRAD DEERY MOTORS HERE IN MAQUOKETA AND AT BURLIGTON.
ROBERT "PAPPY" CRIST, AGE 85, OF DELMAR, DIED FRIDAY AND HIS COMPLETE OBITURARY CAN BE READ AT www.carsonandson.com
THE PEACE PIPE PLAYERS PRODUCTION WAS SEEN BY OVER 600 OVER THE WEEKEND....AT THE NEW OHNWARD CENTER...A VERY GOOD TURNOUT. I SAW IT AND IT WAS A GOOD SHOW.
THE JACKSON COUNTY DEMOCRAT'S ANNUAL STEAK FRY UP AT ST. DONATUS YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING WAS A BIG SUCCESS. STANDING ROOM ONLY. THE FOUR DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES FOR CONGRESS, INCLUDING JACKSON COUNTY'S RICK DICKENSON, WERE THERE AND EACH GAVE A SHORT SPEECH. ALL 4 LOOK TO BE GOOD CANDIDATES.
ALSO SPEAKING, MICHAEL BLOUIN, FORMER CONGRESSMAN IN OUR DISTRICT AND SOON TO BE AN ANNOUNCED CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS, WE DIDN'T GET TO LISTEN TO BOB OSTERHOUSE, FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE. HE WAS THERE THOUGH, TAKING PARTY DONATIONS. GOOD GUY FOR THAT. AND PHIL TABOR WAS THE MASTER OF CEREMONIES.
NATURALLY, EVERYONE SAID ITS TIME TO THROW OUT THE REPUBLICANS AND BIG CHEERS FOLLOWED.
AS ALWAYS, WINDY KALMES' RIBEYE OFF HIS GRILL WAS PERFECT. THE RACE IS ON. ELECTION DAY IS IN NOVEMBER....1966. YES 66.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

4/100 OF AN INCH OF RAIN YESTERDAY.....JUNE TOTAL SO FAR, 6/10....TERRIBLE. LAST JUNE, WE HAD OVER 7 INCHES. HOT AGAIN TODAY.
DR. PAUL BROWN AND WIFE DORIS ARRIVED IN MAQUOKETA 50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK. THEY WERE ON "JUST TALK" MONDAY TO TALK ABOUT THEIR ARRIVAL IN MAQUOKETA THEN AND THE EARLY DAYS OF BEING A DOCTOR AND RAISING A FAMILY. AND ON THE SHOW, THEY ANNOUNCED THAT THEY WILL MOVE FROM MAQUOKETA AT THE END OF THIS MONTH, TO FORT DODGE WHERE A DAUGTHER LIVES.
BOTH ARE WELL AND LOOK GREAT. THEIR LARGE HOUSE HAS BEEN FOR SALE FOR SOME TIME.
PAUL HAS BEEN A MEMBER OF ROTARY FOR OVER 40 YEARS, WAS A FORMER MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCILMAN, AND HAS BEEN VERY ACTIVE IN THE METHODIST CHURCH, MANY TIMES PREACHING THE SUNDAY SERMON WHEN THE MINISTER COULD NOT BE THERE. ALL OF HIS YEARS, HE WAS IN WITH DR. J.A. BROMAN IN THE FIELD OF MEDICINE, FIRST DOWNTOWN AND LATER IN A MODERN NEW BUILDING THEY OWNED ON WEST PLATT STREET. HE (AND DORIS) HAVE SERVED OUR COMMUNITY WELL AND WILL BE MISSED. I WISH THEM THE BEST AT THEIR NEW HOME. PAUL WAS ONE OF THE MAQUOKETA CITIZENS OF THE WEEK AND YOU CAN READ MORE ABOUT HIM AT www.maquoketa-rotary.org
STOP SIGNS ARE SCHEDULED TO BE ADDED NEAR THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL AND SOME TRAFFIC LIGHTS MAY BE REMOVED IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA. BY THE HIGH SCHOOL, AT INTERSECTION OF SOUTH 5TH AND WASHINGTON STREETS...TO SLOW DOWN THE TRAFFIC IN AREA. THE SIGNS WOULD ALSO MAKE IT EASIER TO CROSS THE STREET TO FOLLOW THE SIDEWALK. DOWNTOWN, THE LIGHTS AT OLIVE AND PLATT STREETS MAY COME DOWN. THE OLD ARE IN BAD SHAPE AND IT IS THOUGH THE LIGHT CAUSES A BOTTLENECK IN THE AREA RATHER THAN HELP THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC. AN ENGINEER ALSO SAID THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TRAFFIC TO WARRANT A STOP LIGHT. MAQUOKETA WILL HAVE TO GET IDOT APPROVAL ON THEIR PLANS.
THE BIG 3-NIGHT JACKSON COUNTY PRO-RODEO STARTS TONIGHT AT THE HORSEMAN'S GROUNDS NEAR BELLEVUE.
ARTHUR GOEPFERT, AGE 94, OF MAQUOKEKETA, DIED WEDNESDAY AT CRESTRIDGE NURSING HOME.
HE WAS A FARMER ALL HIS LIFE AND YOU CAN READ HIS OBITUARY AT www.carsonandson.com
THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS SOFTBALL TEAM WON A DOUBLE-HEADER LAST NIGHT OVER DYERSVILLE
BECKMAN. THE GIRLS SO FAR ARE DOING BETTER THAN THE CARDINAL BOYS.
THANKS FOR ANOTHER VISIT.

IT HAS BEEN HOT IN MAQUOKETA...AROUND 90 BOTH YESTERDAY AND TODAY AND MORE TOMORROW.
NOT MUCH HAPPENING "NEWS-WISE".
LAST NIGHT, THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL GAVE THE GO-AHEAD TO TALK TO AN ARCHITECT TO START WORK ON DESIGN OF THE NEW INDOOR POOL AND GYMNASIUM PROJECT, COMMONLY CALL THE ARC.
THE ARC COMMITTEE REPORTED LAST NIGHT THAT THEY HAVE RAISED $4.4 MILLION IN PLEDGES AND CASH AND ARE ESTIMATING THE FACILITY WILL COST $4.5 MILLION. HOWEVER, NOW THEY ARE LOOKING AT RAISING $5 MILLION TO INCLUDE INTEREST THEY WILL NEED FOR THE CITY TO PAY FOR THE BONDS.
THEY HOPE TO START CONSTRUCTION IN THE SPRING.
FORMER MAQUOKETA TEACHER FRANK RANDALL TOOK MORE HEAT AT THE SUPERVIORS MEETING THIS MORNING FOR NOT CLEANING UP HIS PROPERTY QUICKLY ENOUGH ON ROCKDALE ROAD. THE 3 SUPERVIORS TOLD HIM THAT NOT ENOUGH CLEAN-UP HAS BEEN DONE SO FAR AND THEY WANTED HIM TO GET AGGRESSIVE AND MEET THE AUGUST 1ST DEADLINE OR THEY WOULD TAKE LEGAL ACTION. SUPERVISOR "BUCK" KOOS SAID HE'S BEEN BY RANDALL'S PROPERTY AND SAW 19 VEHICLES, THREE CARTS, AND TWO HOUSE TRAILERS.
SHARON BUCK OF BALDWIN DIED TODAY AND HER OBITUARY IS ON THE LAHEY FUNEARL HOME WEB SITE.
SHE SURVIVORS INCLUDE 3 SISTERS IN MAQUOKETA....MARLENE BENDIXEN, DIANNE FULLER AND DENISE SWANSON AND 3 BROTHERS, BILL AND DOUGLAS SCHMITZ OF MAQUOKETA AND GREG OF BALDWIN.
THE MAQUOKETA BOYS BASEBALL TEAM SPLIT A DOUBLEHEADER WITH INDEPENDENCE HERE LAST NIGHT AND PLAY AGAIN TONIGHT AT WYOMING.
DAILY REPORT READER ROGER WARD OF CALIFORNIA REALLY SURPRISED ME THIS MORNING WHEN I OPENED THE MAIL AND FOUND A CHECK TO THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB FOR $100 TO BUY 20 DUCKS THAT WILL RACE JUNE 21ST. HIS CHECK LISTS HIS ADDRESS AS APPLE VALLEY BUT HIS NOTE WITH THE CHECK, LISTS HIS RESIDENCE AS PALM DESERT. MAYBE THEY ARE CLOSE TOGETHER. HE PURCHASED THEM FOR HIS NIECES AND NEPHEWS....ELIZABETH DITCH, GABRIEL DITCH, DEVEN BROOKS, ADDISON BROOKS, AND MACKENZIE BROOKS. I THANK YOU ROGER....AND THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY THANKS YOU. WE WILL HAVE A MEETING AT NOON TOMORROW AND I'LL BE TALKING ABOUT HIM WHEN I GIVE MY DUCK RACE REPORT.
