Three inches of snow last night and today...but, it'll be gone by Sunday as we are supposed to have 40 degree weather Saturday and Sunday.
Senator Chuck Grassley announed today that Maquoketa has received a Federal Aviation Administration grant for $228,673, to rehabilitate a taxiway and apron at the Maquoketa Airport.
The Jackson County Conference Board met last night and it was learned that the County Assesor Bill Goettler
wants to move his office from the Court House because his office space is not large enough. He has
a place picked out, but did not mention where, that he hopes to rent for around $800 a month. The Jackson County Supervisors are not in favor of that move, so more discussion will follow.
Esther Sellnau, 85, of Maquoketa, died yesterday at University Hospitals. She and her husband farmed in the Delmar area and moved to retire in Maquoketa in 1981. Survivors include her husband, Raymond, and several children, including Marilyn Foster of Maquoketa, Steve Sellnau of Maquoketa, 7 grandchildren,
and two brothers in DeWitt and a sister-in-law, Linda Thomsen of Maquoketa.
John "Jimmy" Schmidt, 82, died yesterday at his home. He was in WW2 and farmed in Jackson County from 1948-1963. Survivors include: His wife, Alvara of Maquoketa, 2 daughters, Paulette in Indiana and Annette Lechtenberg of Maquoketa....5 sons, including Dale, Dean and Virgil all of Maquoketa. Also 9 brothers, including Levi and David Schmidt of Maquoketa.
The Maquoketa girls beat Western Dubuque in overtime last night and the Maquoketa boys also defeated
Western Dubuque last night...both games here in town. Bob Warner broadcast both on KMAQ-FM.
Lots of talk around town about Wal-Mart buying several acres of land just South of Maquoketa and across the
road from the new Motel....to build a new Wal Mart Super Center, which will include a full grocery store department. Does Maquoketa need it? No comment right now.
