IN BOYS BASKETBALL LAST NIGHT, THE CARDINALS PLAYED THEIR FINAL REGULAR SEASON GAME AT MARION AND LOST BY 2 POINTS IN THE FINAL 6 SECONDS. THEY WILL HAVE THEIR FIRST TOUNAMENT GAME NEXT MONDAY.
TWO MAQUOKETA WRESTLERS ARE AT THE STATE TOURNAMENT AND BOTH WRESTLED THIS AFTERNOON. THE FIRST MATCH BY BLAKE ROCKWELL WAS WON BY BLAKE, A DECISIVE WIN. ADAM PAPE LOST HIS FIRST MATCH BUT THEN LATER ON THIS AFTERNOON WON HIS WRESTLE-BACK MATCH, SO BOTH MAQUOKETA WRESTLERS WILL WRESTLE AGAIN TOMORROW. AS ALWAYS, DR. PAUL KOOB DID A GREAT JOB OF DESCRIBING THE MATCHES ON KMAQ-FM.
THE BEAR CREEK NARCOTICS TASK FORCE RAIDED A HOME AT THE SOUTH EDGE OF MAQUOKETA LAST NIGHT, BUT NO ONE WAS ARRESTED. TASK FORCE OFFICIALS RECEIVED A COMPLAINT THAT SOME ANHYDROUS AMMNIA WAS TAKEN FROM THE NEW HORIZON'S FS BUSINESS. THE TASK FORCE GOT A SEARCH WARRANT FOR A HOME ON EAST JEFFERSON. THERE THEY FOUND THE ANHYDROUS AND OTHER ITEMS WHICH HAVE BEEN SENT TO THE STATE CRIME LAB FOR TESTING. OFFICIALS HAVE NOT SAID WHO WAS HOME AT THE TIME. NO ONE WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGES ARE PENDING. THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE, MAQUOKETA POLICE, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ADN RESCUE SQUAD AND AMBULANCE PERSONNEL ALL ASSISTED AT THE RAID.
JACKSON COUNTY HAS A NEW ASSISTANT COUNTY ATTORNEY, NICHOLAS SCOTT OF CEDAR RAPIDS. HE STARTS WORK MONDAY AT AT SALARY OF $40,000 A YEAR AND HE REPLACES DAVID COLDWELL WHO DIED OF SELF-INFLICTED GUNSHOT JAN. 31ST.
SCOTT IS A GRADUTE OF THE UNIV. OF IOWA, IS MARRIED (WIFE IS A TEACHER IN IOWA CITY) AND THEY HAVE A SON. HE IS NOT REQUIRED TO MOVE TO JACKSON COUNTY FOR THE POSITION. HE COMES FROM A CEDAR RAPIDS LAW FIRM AND BEFORE THAT, WAS A PROSECUTING INTERN IN THE MUSCATINE COUNTY ATTORNEY'S OFFICE.
CLINTON AND ELLY POGEMILLER OF DAVENPORT ARE PARENTS OF A BOY BORN LAST FRIDAY IN DAVENPORT. MATERNAL GRANDPARENTS ARE JACK AND MARY BECK OF MAQUOKETA.
ROTARY IS 100 YEARS OLD TODAY. THE LOCAL MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB CELEBRATED THE EVENT AT THEIR REGULAR WEDNESDAY NOON MEETING AT THE EAGLES CLUB. THE FIRST CLUB WAS STARTED ON FEBRUARY 23, 1905, IN CHICAGO BY AN ATTORNEY, NAMED PAUL HARRIS. THE MAQUOKETA CLUB WAS ORGANIZED IN 1938. RICH HAINSTOCK IS THE CURRENT PRESIDENT AND THERE ARE AROUND 50 MEMBERS THAT MEET WEEKLY. I HAVE BEEN A MEMBER SINCE THE 60'S.
