76 FOR A HIGH TODAY....SUNNY....GOOD WEEKEND FORECAST....HAD SOME LIGHT RAIN LAST NIGHT, VERY LIGHT, BUT IT HELPED.

THERE ARE 10 CERTIFIED CANDIDATES FOR 3 OPENINGS ON THE MAQUOKETA POLICE DEPARTMENT, INLCLUDING ONE WOMAN. NEW POLICE CHIEF BRAD KORANDA SAID THE NEXT STEP WILL BE TO INTERVIEW THE CANDIDATES BEFORE HE MAKES A FINAL SELECTION.

MAQUOKETA CITY CREWS CUT A TELEPHONE LINE WHEN THEY REPAIRED A CURB RECENTLY AND QWEST WANTS TO BE PAID FOR THE REPAIRS. AT A MEETINGTHIS MORNING OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEE OF THE CITY COUNCIL, CITY MANAGER BRIAN WAGNER SAID THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT WAS USING A JACKHAMMER TO DIG UP SOME CEMENT TO REPAIR A CURB AT SECOND AND LOCUST STREETS.
THE PHONE LINE WAS JUST BELOW THE CURB ON THE GROUND AND THE LINE WAS CUT. QWEST SENT A BILL FOR $2,887 AND WHEN THE CITY SAID THEY BELEIVED IT WAS TOO HIGH, QWEST NEGOTIATED IT DOWN TO $2,300 AND THE CITY WILL HAVE TO PAY THAT LOWER AMOUNT.

A MAQUOKETA WOMAN, JACQUELINE DAVISON, AGE 64, BACKED INTO A FIRE HYDRANT IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. DAMAGES WERE LISTED AT $800 TO HER CAR AND MINOR DAMAGE TO THE HYDRANT. THERE WAS NO LEAK AND NO INJURIES. NO CHARGES WERE FILED.

RUTH DMOCHOWSKI, AGE 88, OF MAQUOKETA AND FORMERLY OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS, DIED AT THE MAQUOKETA CARE CENTER WEDNESDAY. SHE WAS A RETIRED NURSE AND SURIVORS INCLUDE A SISTER, FERN CLARKE OF MAQUOKETA.

MAQUOKETA PLAYS AT ANAMOSA TONIGHT IN FOOTBALL. ANAMOSA WILL BE HARD TO BEAT.

IOWA PLAYS AT MICHIGAN TOMORROW AND MICHIGAN WILL BE HARD TO BEAT.
